Psalm 47)
1 O clap your hands, all you peoples;
Shout unto God with the voice of triumph.
2 For the LORD (Yahaveh) Most High (Elyon) is to be reverenced;
He is a great King (this is a special contrast with Sennacherib [Isa. 36:4]) over all the earth.
3 May He subdue the people under us,
And the tribes of men under our feet.
4 He chooses our inheritance for us, (Referring to Israel's inheritance)
Chooses the excellency of Jacob whom He loved. Selah. (Connecting the consideration of what God had done for Hezehiah and Zion and the exaltation claimed in 46:10 with the exaltation given in 47;5,9.)
5 God is exalted with a shout,
The LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
6 Sing great praises to God, sing great praises:
Sing great praises to our King, sing great praises.
7 For God is the King of all the earth:
Sing you praises with understanding. (Cp. 49:3 and 1 Cor. 14:15,16.)
8 God has become king over the nations:
God sits upon His holy Throne.
9 The princes of the people are gathered together,
To be a People of the God of Abraham:
For the shields (put for princes, or defenses in general) of the earth belong to God:
He is greatly exalted. (This is the object of the Psalm. connected with 46 by Selah in 46;13.)
