What with all the sold-out tours and record-breaking album sales, you'd think 'N Sync's Lance Bass would be over the whole wanting to be a millionaire thing by now. Guess again. Bass -- the Mississippi-born, fair-haired member of the 'N Sync bunch -- will pit his wits against Regis Philbin on ABC's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire during sweeps week in May. Of course, because he's, uh, something of a successful celebrity, Bass will have to settle for playing for charity, in this case 'N Sync's own Challenge for the Children foundation. He will appear on the popular game show alongside fellow celeb-types Drew Carey, Rosie O'Donnell, Dana Carvey, David Duchovny, Ray Romano, Vanessa Williams and Kathie Lee Gifford. Bass is scheduled to tape his show today, but the celebrity episodes will not air until May 1-3.

According to Melinda Bell, VP of special projects for 'N Sync's management company (the Wright Entertainment Group), when the call from Millionaire came asking for a 'N Sync contender, Bass was the natural first choice. "Lance is pretty much the game guy," said Bell. "He loves board games. If everybody wanted to go out to a nightclub, and somebody said, 'Does anybody want to play Monopoly?,' Lance would vote for Monopoly. He just loves that stuff."

Although Bell said Bass was a little nervous preparing for the show, concerned teenage girls needn't wait by their phones hoping he'll call for help -- he's already asked 'N Sync manager Johnny Wright and Jay Leno to be his lifelines.

Bass's Millionaire appearance isn't the only charitable shenanigan on the 'N Sync calendar. On Saturday, July 29, the day after the last of 'N Sync's three shows at Madison Square Garden, the group will host its second Challenge for the Children celebrity basketball game at a yet-to-be-decided venue in New York. Like last year's event, the game will feature the 'N Sync members split up into two teams (the Daze and the Knights) filled out by other music celebrities, actors and real athletes, with NBA stars serving as coaches. Fans in attendance will be treated to music performances at halftime. Bell said the details of this year's showdown -- including the non-'N Sync players -- are still being worked out.
