System Trikks

You can create easily an icon in Win95.
Simply select a *.bmp-file that you find suitable.
Copy it and change the extension from .BMP to .ICO. That's all there is to it.

Or, to save even more space on your drive,
use the images on your hardrive without even changing them to icon files . . .
You can use any .BMP file as an icon in the Explorer!
When you select the Change Icon button in any Shortcut's properties dialog,
simply choose All Files in the drop down list and select the .BMP file you want.

Tired of looking at all of those little arrows on your shortcut icons? Try this trick.
There are programs that can do this, but they eat up memory and resources in your system . . .
The normal icon size is 32 pixels. Unless you are using over-size icons,
in which case this trick will knock them down to about half their present size.
Don't use this trick if you have trouble seeing small icons ! ! !
Right click on desktop, select properties, select appearance,
and in the item window, select icon.
Change the size to '30', click on apply and, presto, the arrows are gone.

Or, if you're a little more tech-oriented, try this one . . .
Open Regedit, or whichever registry editor you use.
Make a backup of your entire registry,
which you should be doing anyway as a routine system task.
Search for IsShortcut, and delete all instances of it.
Go back to your desktop, press F5, and there you go.
No more little white shortcut arrows.

MSPaint can serve as a bitmap viewer.
Simply click on and drag any bitmap(.bmp) icon
onto Microsoft Paint window to view it.
(This will only work with bitmaps.)
The current image will be replaced with the new bitmap.
Much faster than opening them by the menu box thing.

Makes sharing your images through e_mail really fast and simple.
In fact, this same trick works with most image viewers available today.
Just make sure that whatever viewer you're using
supports the image file type you're trying to open.
This also works with all Windows media players
and most other modern media players !
Go get Irfanview, a great image tool ! (Freeware)

Wherever you have your screensaver files,
right click on the icon for the 3D Text saver. Select 'Configure'.
In the window where it says OpenGL (the 'Text to Use' box),
type the word volcano instead of OpenGL.
Now test the screen saver
Now it names off different Volcanoes around the world!
This is a hidden easter-egg from the developers. Slick.
Try as many different words as you can think of.
Who knows what else is in there?
I've read that there is a word which will
bring up all of the names of the development team.
Didn't find out what it was, though.
The article didn't have that. Nice . . .
If anyone figures it out, drop us an e-Mail and let us know.
Let us hear from you with any other trigger words you find!

If you want to open an already associated file with a program
that's different than the one it is associated with,
hold down the Shift key, and then right click the file.
'Open with' should be added to the menu now,
so you can open the file with a different program.
Uncheck the 'Always use this . . ." box,
then click on the program you want to use.

In Explorer, if you click on a folder once,
then hold down the Shift key and double click on it,
you will open the folder with a two-pane Explorer view.
(This won't work in single-click mode.)

When changing a shortcut's icon, you can find hidden icons at
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\PIFMGR.DLL.
