When hearing the screams and cries of her daughter, Maria comes rushing into the bedroom and sits on the bed alongside Eva. Maria takes Eva in her arms who then awakens from her sleep. She comforts Eva by telling her that she only had a ‘bad dream’. Maria continues to hold and rock her daughter in her arms, as Eva is whimpering and slightly crying. All the while though the same black rat slowly retreats under a child’s chair in a poorly lit corner of the room.
The days now grow closer to Christmas. It is only a couple of days before Christmas as the sun is quickly setting. Inside the chapel Rosenkreutz is meditating. Suddenly there is a light of a soft golden hue that fills the chapel while a voice of a man, in a soft tranquil tone, calls to Rosenkreutz. He raises his head and opens his eyes but sees no one. Again the voice calls to him and begins to tell him that the young girl, Eva, has been stricken by the plague. She is very ill and she lies in bed unconscious. Her mother is in great distress and needs his help and prayers. The voice tells Rosenkreutz to go to them now and pray over the girl. The voice tells him that he must pray that the girl may be kept in the loving protection of God’s angels. Then in a blessing voice it says to Rosenkreutz, “Do this in remembrance of Me.” After this the soft golden light slowly dissipated. This was the voice of the Etheric Christ.
Rosenkreutz immediately begins to prepare for his walk to the home of Maria and Eva. It is a long walk at night as the ground is covered with snow. He arrives at their door and knocks sternly. Maria comes to the door and is both shocked and relieved to hear that it is his voice who answers at the other side of the door. She quickly lets him in the home as she is very distraught due to the condition of Eva. Rosenkreutz tells her that he knows of Eva’s condition and has come to help in anyway he can.
After entering the home he removes his cloak and he and Maria enter the bedroom of Eva. He walks to the side of Eva’s bed and leans towards her to push back her hair from the side of her face. She is lying unconscious in her bed. Her face is perspiring, as her hair clings to the sides of her face. Her face is riddled with buboes as well as her arms and hands. Her breathing is deep and difficult. Maria moves to the other side of the bed where she keeps a small stool to sit on along with a water basin and a small facial cloth to wipe the perspiration from her daughter’s face. The room is again dimly lit by one candle that sits on the room’s night stand.
Rosenkreutz stands to one side of the bed and looks solemnly at Eva. Maria is very distressed and asks him if there is anything that he can do, knowing that he is often in communication with God’s angels. He says that he will pray for her, asking God to send the healing forces of His divine angels. He then begins to pray in a low, soft voice. Maria, who remains sitting on the stool, then lowers her head, closes her eyes, and folds her hands in silent prayer with Eva’s left hand in both of hers. Within a short time Maria lifts her head as tears are running down her face. She then pulls Eva out from under the blankets and holds her in her arms across her lap. She brushes aside the hair from Eva’s face.
Eva continues to perspire heavily and her breathing is becoming increasingly labored. Maria begins to sob more deeply. She is sensing and seeing the life of her daughter quickly ebbing away as she lies in her arms. In tears, Maria begins to sing the song that she and Eva would sing when in the garden of Rosenkreutz. As she is singing, Rosenkreutz continues to pray earnestly while standing along the side of Eva’s bed.
