In 1987, I had the opportunity to take two flying lessons. I loved it but couldn't afford to go for my license. I didn't even entertain the thought. In 1993 I had the opportunity to fly around a bit in someone's personal Piper-Cherokee. It was alot of fun.
In 2004 I began jet setting it between Toronto and Quebec City and Montreal. Lots of airport trips, each of them for weekends of conferences and food. Limosine rides between airport and hotels. It was still a thrill everytime I took a plane.
In 2005 I had the opportunity to fly in a glider. The Air Cadets were practicing out of the Welland Airport and my daughter was in the Cadets. What a thrill! While flying around and hearing the wind but no engine noise, I was lucky enough to be sharing the airspace with a Lancaster. This massive airplane was a bomber during the second world war and had history that I could only imagine. How many people had the opportunity to see that airplane fly in person, let alone see it out the window of another aircraft? That is, how many people alive today have had that chance?
In 2006, I flew long distance and went to Mexico. I always want the window because I just love the view as well as the sensations. It is all an adventure. This year I have found myself surrounded by the world of flight. Small aircraft. How wonderful is that! Everyone should have the chance to fly in a helicopter. It feels different from a 'Fixed Wing' aircraft. In an airplane you are being pulled behind a propellor and held up by the air it forces over and under the wings. Flaps on the wings and tail move to alter direction and airspeed. In a helicopter you are bobbing below a rotor which uses its blades to both create lift, and direction. The angle of the blades change and the angle of the rotor changes.
Here are some photos to enjoy!
In the middle here, there should be a shot of me in this Skybolt
It was in the Skybolt that I was turned upside down. I was a willing passenger in an open cockpit bi-plane doing Cuban Loops, Hammerheads, and other aerobatics. That was a thrill ride like no other. First I had a briefing in how to take my blood flow out the of the grip of the G-forces. It was so much fun.
