The Falls!

Niagara Falls

The Niagara Region is a wonderful and diverse area. There is more to it than most tourists ever even realize.

Windy!

Port Colborne at the Welland Canal

Our boundary to the east runs up from Long Beach on Lake Erie, to Castorville and up to Fifty Point on Lake Ontario. Our Northern and Southern boundary are both well outlined by the shores of the Great Lakes. Our Western boundary is the Niagara River which is also the border between Canada and the United States.

Rainbow Bridge!

The Rainbow Bridge and the Maid of the Mist

From our fruit orchards and wineries, to our nature and fitness trails, we have it all!

We have a rich history in Native American culture, with on-going archeological exploration and present day native festivals and celebrations.

The Peace Bridge!

Fort Erie, Ontario

This region played a large role in the war between the British and Americans. Fort Erie, Queenston, and Fort George all remain as testament to that time of establishing national borders in our area.

Another source of pride for Niagara is that it was the last stop on the underground railroad. For many years, the Niagara Region offered the first taste of freedom for escaping slaves. Our rivers, forests, churches and homes hold many secret spaces, signs and signals that meant refuge to those running from slavery. Our Freedom trail is an extension of one that begins in the southern United States and ends here.

A Canadian requirement is our Tim Horton's Coffee.

Coffee!Coffee!

Always time for a Timmy's coffee.

Tim Horton's coffee and donuts, is everywhere. Most folks order "double double" (two cream, two sugar) or "regular" (one cream, one sugar). We've even been noted as the donut shop capital, with more coffee shops per person than any other area on the planet.
We are the home of the Zippo Lighter, the Mentholatum Factory, and Bick's Pickles.

We put ketchup and vinegar on our french fries, and we have blue cheese dressing, celery and carrots with our chicken wings.

Mist in the distance!

You can see the mist and hear the thunder before you get there.

We have bicycle tours and groups which travel our many paved trails along the canal, and the Niagara River. You can ride your bike on the paved Friendship Trail from Ridgeway to Fort Erie.

Friendship Trail!

A bike ride!

Then hop onto the paved Niagara River Recreational Trail and ride it along the Niagara River through Chippawa, then right past the Niagara Falls, through Queenston, and into Niagara-On-The-Lake. Spend time in any of these places and get a room in Niagara-On-The-Lake. It is a quaint old town with a great history and an abundance of things to do. The wineries, the stores, the restaurants, the theatres, there are many things to keep you entertained. You could stay in a haunted inn, (The Angel Inn), or at a fancy hotel and spa. They might just be filming a movie in town,(The Dead Zone was one of the many movies using this town for a backdrop). The next day ride back to Ridgeway, stopping at one of the beaches, or catching what you missed on your way back.

July 15, 2001!

A beautiful day for a bike ride!

Oh, and don't forget to take the picture everyone gets at the falls. You know the one with you and the falls behind you, or you right at the edge.

Yeah! Right here!

The Edge of the falls. Every one gets this shot.

Maid of the Mist from the edge!

We have the Niagara Bruce Trail Club which covers our section of the Bruce Trail which follows the escarpment from Niagara to Tobermory.

There is the Gorge to hike. This is a wonderful journey for the entire family. If kiddies are along, you can take the safe route from the Niagara Parkway down to the bottom of the gorge, using stairs and well travelled paths.

Check out Queenston, an old town that has survived invasions, war, and battles. Climb to the top of Brock's Monument and look at the glorious view.

A Wild Ride on the Whirlpool JetBoat!

Today we all went on the jetboat. What a RUSH! These boats require that the passengers wear proper footwear, and a lifejacket. A safety orientation is done and passengers are well informed that they will get completely saturated even if they choose to wear the slicker provided. Then you get into a triple engine flat bottomed boat that displaces only 6-12 inches of water. You do what you are told by the guide who seems to love his job (who could blame him). He has fun playing with the crowd of about 15-20. Then you enjoy the most exciting boat ride in my experience. Rapids!!!!! It feels like the boat falls into a hole and the nose digs into the opposite side. The entire nose of the boat is an airtight unit so the front of the boat bobs to the surface without ever completely submerging. The water it scooped up is sent in a giant wave over the boat and its passengers. Sometimes it seems to hang there above your head, a sheet of water, and then the boat rises to meet it. It was absolutely amazing. The captain does a few 360 degree turns, which I love. The ride is long enough to take up your morning, and leave you feeling like you got more than your money's worth. Then when you're docked, you get dressed into dry clothes and then go watch the video they made of your trip. You have to buy it, Not because they make you but because it is excellent. Set to music and shows you and the faces you recognise. It shows the waves hitting you and the action of the ride. What a ride!
