An exchange I had with a colleague whose views, IMO, echo a variation of the 'post-modern'
approach to metaphysics…

”I'm not religious, but spiritual, guided not by fear that's self-created or imposed by
others.”

I think it's rather commendable to have an interest in, and an appreciation of, the spiritual realm (by
which I take it you mean that dimension 'beyond' - but possibly integrated with - our physical
'everyday' world, right?).

Still, I've always believed that it's also important to get a grip on the *truth* of what constitutes the
spiritual realm:  What is the 'supernatural' world like?  Is it an Arabic masculine bliss (like Islam)?  Or a merging into a cosmic consciousness where all self-identity is gone (like classical Hinduism/Buddhism)?  Or an elevated personal relationship with a loving Father in Heaven (like
what the Bible teaches)?

I realise that it's important not merely to SAY, "There is a spiritual world".  We also need to 'flesh
out' what exactly we MEAN when we say such things.  I take it from your note that you do not subscribe to any of the major faiths today, correct?  And - assuming that's the case - I take it you
do not agree with the 'picture' of the after-life presented by these faiths, right?

Then may I ask (sincerely) what your view of the 'Beyond' is?  What do you believe/envision occurs
after death?  What for you is the purpose/meaning of life?  And, most importantly, *why* do you
believe what you believe?

FYI, I also do not consider myself 'religious'...I kinda think that word has been corrupted beyond
repair in today's society (smile)... I prefer to be known as a person who is sensitive to the transcendant yet personal promptings of a God who has revealed Himself in history, through this remarkable linguistic medium... known today as the Bible (grin)...

”History as we know it may have the forms but not the substance.”

Again, correct me if I'm mistaken, but I take this to mean - in context - that you feel our world's
history has not given us a 'true' or 'correct' understanding of spirituality?

I'm genuinely curious to understand what you mean.  I enjoy absorbing more 'precision' in other
people's worldviews...:)

”Read the books Conversations with God 1,2 & 3? And two more after the Trilogy,
Friendship with God, and Communion with God. Absolutely brilliant.... to the heart of that
Cosmic question that we all ask at some point of our lives. ;)”

Unfortunately I haven't read those books above you mentioned...what do they speak about?  What
is the worldview they commend?

Have a good weekend...;>)

In good faith & conversation,
Alwyn
