Hadasdagedoy In hechaloth lore a guard of the 6th Heaven.

Hadiririon ”the beloved angel of God” He may be invoked in ritual magick.

Hadraniel, Hadarniel, Hadariel, Hadriel ”majesty of God” A porter angel stationed at the 2nd gate in Heaven. He is taller than Kemuel ”by 60 myriads of parasangs” but shorter than Sandalphon ”by a 500 years’ journey.” On seeing Hadraniel, Moses was ”struck dumb with awe”; but when Moses uttered the Supreme Name, Hadraniel in turn trembled. Legend speaks of Adam visiting Heaven some 2,000 years before Moses. On that occasion, Hadraniel spoke to Adam about his possession of The Book of the Angel Raziel, a holy book reputed to have contained secrets and knowledge unknown even to the angels. This precious book came finally into the possession of Solomon, via Noah and Abraham. According to a Zoharic legend, ”when Hadraniel proclaims the will of the Lord, his voice penetrates through 200,000 firmaments,” and the Revelation of Moses states, ”with every word from his mouth go forth 12,000 flashes of lightning.” In gnosticism Hadraniel is ”only one of seven subordinates to Jehuel, prince of fire.” As Hadriel, he serves as one of the guards of the gates of the East Wind. In Sefer-ha-Heshek, he is one of the many name of Metatron, and he has been so identified in apocalyptic literature.

Haduriel In hechaloth lore a guard of the 6th Heaven.

Hafkiel In Aramaic Incantation Text from Nippur, he is an angel invoked in the exorcism of demons.

Hagai In hechaloth lore a guard of the 5th Heaven.

Hagedola An angel of the Seal invoked during ceremonial rites.

Haggo An angel of the Seal who may be summoned during conjuration rites.

Hagiel An angel signifying the intelligence of Venus when it enters the sign of Taurus and Libra. His cabalistic number is 49 and corresponding angel, the spirit ruler of Venus, is Gadamel.

Hagios The name of a great angel or one of the secret names of God used in invocation rites.

Hagith Ruler of Venus and one of the seven Olympian spirits. He is governor of 21 or 35 of the 196 Olympian provinces. He is a Friday angel. According to Cornelius Agrippa, he commands 4,000 legions of angels; he has the power of transmuting metals. In white magick he is one of the seven stewards of Heaven.

Haglon An angel of the 3rd hour of the night serving under Sarquamich.

Hahael, Hahahel An angel of the order of virtues. He protects Christian missionaries and al disciples of the Christ; he is also one of the seventy-two angels that bear the name of God Shemhamphorae. His corresponding angel is Chantaré.

Hahaiah An angel of the order of cherubim. He influences thoughts and reveals hidden mysteries to mortals. His corresponding angel is Atarph.

Hahyel, Chayyliel A prince of the ministering angels when these angels sit in at the divine judgment councils.

Hamal, Hmnal An angel with dominion over water. He is also one of the seven angels worshipped by Balaam. He is invoked in Arabic incantation rites.

Hamaliel According to Trithemius, an angel of August, one of the rulers of the order of virtues, and governor of Virgo. In ceremonial magick, however, the ruler of Virgo is Voil or Voel.

Hamon One of the many guards of the gates of the South Wind. In # Enoch (Chap. 18) he is a ”great prince, fearful and honored, pleasant and terrible, who maketh all the children of heaven to tremble when the time draweth nigh for the singing of the Thrice Holy.” It has been suggested that this is another name for Gabriel.

Hananiel ”graciously given of God” An archangel whose name appears inscribed on a pentagram.

Hanhl The angel who ordered Balaam to build the first seven altars.

He is also governor of Capricorn and of Venus. He figures in the list of the seven (or ten) archangels and the ten holy sefiroth. In occult writings he is accredited with transporting Enoch to Heaven (usually ascribed to Anafiel). He has been compared to the Chaldean Ishtar and is invoked as an amulet against evil.

Hariel, Harael, Behemial An angel with dominion over tame beasts. He is invoked against impieties. He rules science and the arts and is of the order of cherubim.

Harshael, Harshiel An angel invoked in Syriac conjuring ceremonies. As a spellbinding power he is cited (especially for the binding of sorcerers) along with Michael, Gabriel, Sarphiel, Azrael, and others.

Harta’il In Arabic lore a guardian angel invoked in rites of exorcism.

Harudha In Persian mythology an angel who rules the element of water. In Mandaean lore he is equated with the female Haurvatat, who is the spirit of health and vegetation as well as ruler of water.

Harut, Haroth, Haurvatati, Haroot Usually linked with Maroth in Islamic legend. Harut was sent down from Heaven (with Maroth) to teach mortals the art of government (Koran, sura 2,102). In Persian lore, Harut and Maroth were angels of the highest rank, claimed to be two of the Amesha Spentas, and in possession of the secret name of God; this name unhappily they revealed to Zobra or Zuhrah, a mortal woman, with whom they both fell in love. A footnote to Ode 14 of Hafiz states that by the power of the Explicit Name, Zuhrah ascended to Venus ”with which she became identified in Mohammedan mythology”; and continues that the fallen angels (Marut and Harut) ”were punished be being confined, head down, in a pit near Babylon, where they were supposed to teach magick and sorcery.” In the Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics IV, 615, the two are characterized as ”fallen angels with a Satanic role.”

Harviel In hechaloth lore an angel stationed at the 2nd heavenly hall.

Hasdiel An angel of Venus; also the angel of benevolence along with the angel Zadkiel. In The Zohar he is one of two chieftains, along with Shamshiel, that accompanied Uriel when her bore his standard in battle.

Hashesiyah One of the many names of Metatron.

Hashmal, Chasmal, Hayyah Chief angel of the order of dominions (hashmallim). The Zohar cites the term as meaning ”an inner, supernal sphere, hidden and veiled, in which the mysteries of the celestial letters of the Holy Name are suspended.” The legend of the Jews state the ”Hashmal aurrounds the throne of God.” He is the ”fire speaking angel.” In Hagiga an incident is noted; ”once upon a time a young man was studying the vision of Ezekiel and was dwelling upon the angel Chasmal when fire proceeded from Chasmal and consumed him.” The moral of this story in not explained.

Hasmed The angel of annihilation, and one of the five angels of punishment encountered by Moses in Heaven.

Hatach An angel invoked in medieval Jewish incantation rites. The name derives from the initials of the words of the incantation.

Hatspatsiel One of the many names of Metatron.

Haurvatat ”wholeness” In Zoroastrianism, one of the six Amesha Spentas. She is the personification of salvation. She is also a spirit of the waters. In Mandaean lore she is equated with Harudha, who is male. Some scholars see a derivation of the Koranic fallen angel Harut from this Persian angel.

Haurvatati, Haurvatat an angel in Arabic lore derived from the Amesha Spentas; also called Chordad.

Haven One of the twelve genii who preside over the twelve hours of the day. He is the genius of dignity.

Havhaviyah, Haviyahu, Hayat Three of the many names of Metatron.

Hayyael, Hayyel, Hashmal, Chayyiel, Hayyliel, Johiel, Yayael Chief angel of the hayyoth. He shares dominion over wild beasts with Thegri (Thuriel), Mitniel, and Jehiel.

Haziel ”vision of God” A cherub invoked to obtain the pity of God. He is one of the seventy-two angels bearing the name of God Shemhamphorae. When equated with Bernael, he is an angel of darkness.

He’el ”life of God” An angel leader of the ”heads of thousands.” He is ruler of one of the seasons of the year and associated with Elimelech.

Heiglot An angel of snowstorms and ruler of the 1st hour.

Heikhali In hechaloth lore an guard at the 7th heavenly hall.

Hekaloth, hechaloth An angel in the heavenly Paradise mentioned in the treatise Hekaloth and in The Zohar I, 141fn.

Hel A name for God or an angel of God invoked in conjuring rites.

Helayaseph, Jiluyaseph, Hilujaseph An angel governing one of the seasons and is the ”head of a thousand” angels of the seasons.

Hemah Angel of wrath who has dominion over the death of domestic animals; also an angel of destruction. He was 500 parasangs tall, and was ”forged out of chains of black and red fire.” See Af

Heman ”trust” Leader of the heavenly choir that sing hosannas in the morning hours. Over time he was transformed into maestro-angels in order to perform, in Heaven, services that he showed special skills for on earth.

Hhml Haml An angel of the firmament, one of the seven worshipped by Balaam. The name was created through permutations of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.
