UNTIL I MET YOU
I dreamed of golden-headed gods
Who’d love me day and night
Of glorious raven-hair princes
Who for my love would fight
I dreamed of men with tender words
So full of adoration
I dreamed of poets, men who’d sit
In quiet contemplation
Who’d think of words to flatter me,
O
f deeds so good and true.
I dreamed and dreamed of many men
I dreamed ‘til I met you
You were no god of golden hair;
No prince of raven hue
You spoke no words of love – at first
So why did I love you?
In days or weeks or months it’s true
My dreams returned again
But you were star of all of them
A man amongst the men
What words had made me fall for you?
What deeds had changed my mind?
What virtues had you over them –
The dreamy hero kind?
I’ve never known, yet I know this:
If I had choice again
I’d never choose the gold-hair god
Nor all the other men
For I have love, much more than that
I’ve joyous love so true
And I could never dream of this
Before, ‘til I met you
