Disney License Plate Mysteries

One of the biggest problems with collecting Disney License Plates is that there is no official Disney Company list of the license plates that have been produced. Collectors really don't know what plates are out there and plates are always turning up that have been released years prior to their discovery.

Since there have been no manufacturers positively identified, questions of how the plates are manufactured or produced remain unanswered and add to the “mystery” of Disney License Plate collecting.

This page presents a number of those “mysteries” in hopes that someone who reads the DLPC Website might have an answer to one or more of the many questions.

If you have any clues or answers to these mysteries, send them to: DLPC Webmaster.

Mystery #1

Who manufactures the Disney License Plates?

There have been no companies identified and there is no Disney source of information.

Mystery #2

What is the significance or the reason of the different colored backs found on the license plates?

One of the biggest mysteries for Disney License Plates is colored backs. Numerous plates have been found with different colored backs. While the reason for the variation is not known, there are several possible explanations. Trial production runs, using colored aluminum to eliminate printing a certain color on the front of the plate or being first run plates might explain the variation. However, none of the possible explanations are consistent with all the variations discovered so far. Example: DW-GN-02 (has three versions, aluminum, white and gray backs).

Mystery #3

What is the reason that the same license plate can be found with and without ID numbers?

Several license plates have been found with and without the ID number printed on the plate. Examples: DW-GN-03 and DW-GN-04A.

Mystery #4

What was the “Star Spangled Celebration” event which occurred at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World that was featured on DL-GN-09 and DW-GN-05 license plates?

The “Star Spangled Celebration” event occurred sometime in 1991, but there is a lack of information to be found about it. Disney Archives doesn't even have any information on the event.

Mystery #5

What do the numbers on the back of the DW-AK-02B license plate mean?

On the white backed version of the DW-AK-02 license plate are numbers printed across the back of the plate. So far this is the only white backed plate with this numbered marking.

Mystery #6

How many different versions for the same year of Walt Disney World Golf Tournament license plates exist?

So far four versions have been discovered: Volunteer, Participant, Classic Club and Patron. Are there any more versions? Do they exist for each year that the tournament was held?

Mystery #7

In 1996 there were two plates that appear to have been created for “The Walt Disney Gallery” stores but appear to never have made it to public release. They were integrated into a photo album and a backpack. Were these intended for public release and why were they pulled from release?

The plates were a California replica plate “MKY-MSE” and a New York replica plate “I-LV-MKY”. See LP-PA-01 and LP-BP-01.

Mystery #8

Why wasn't there a 2002 Walt Disney World year license plate produced?

Year plates started at Walt Disney World in 2000 and have been produced for each year since then, with the exception of 2002.

Mystery #9

What was the real purpose of TD-GN-01 and TD-GN-06? Were they created at serving trays or license plates?

These two plates produced for Tokyo Disneyland have features of both serving trays and license plates. The intended purpose is not at all clear.

Mystery #10

What was the reason for the six different variations of the Magic Kingdom Haunted Mansion “DOOM BUGY” license plates? Was this plate so popular that it was reprinted five times?

See: DW-MK-17, DW-MK-19, DW-MK-20, DW-MK-22 and DW-MK-25.
