Information from "Herbie, The Love Bug" Fan Website: Herbie bears original 1963 yellow on black California plates, OFP 857. These plates stayed with Herbie up until "Herbie Fully Loaded" in 2005. “Herbie Fully Loaded” was the only film in the series to not feature a front license plate on Herbie. The letters and numbers on Herbie's tag have a hidden meaning. “The Love Bug's” producer, Robert Stevenson, first worked with Walt Disney in August of 1957, so OFP stands for “Our First Production” and 857 represents August of 1957.
Information from the seller: This is a screen accurate “Herbie the Love Bug” metal stamped Volkswagen Beetle prop License Plate. After months of research, this is the first Disney plate we've decided to produce. Herbie's plate is reproduced exactly as it appeared on screen. There are a few "special" little differences that make this plate stand out from the other California prop plates we offer. The most noticeable difference about Herbie's plate is the number 8. The 8 is rounded and is not a California DMV style number. Also, the size of the "California" across the top is just a tad smaller than other black California plates.
