Variation List of Disney License Plates By Steve Garner Text Format: My Catalog Number -- Plate ID Number -- UPC Code Definitions There are several types of license plate variations that are shown on this page and they have been classified by one or more of the following definitions. Please keep in mind that due to the lack of historical information that most of the information presented here is very subjective. There have been no verified facts from Disney or any company that produces the license plates shown. Back Color One of the more common variations, but the least understood. This variation deals with the back or reverse side of the license plate being of a different color or style. Most of the aluminum license plates produced have a plain (bare) aluminum back and a variation here means that the back is anything but plain, bare aluminum. Most of the plastic license plates are produced with white back and a variation here means that the back is anything but white in color. While the reason for the variation is not known, there are several possible explanations. Trial production runs, using colored aluminum to eliminate printing a certain color on the front of the plate or being first run plates might explain the variation. However, none of the possible explanations are consistent with all the variations discovered so far. This variation is commonly confused with "Background Variation", which deals with the front of the plate. Background Color Also one of the more common variations, this variation deals with color changes to the front, image side, of the license plate. This variation is also not totally understood, but as with all collectible items, it has been a common production/marketing practice to increase sales for a product by making small changes to the product. Then collectors will want and purchase all of the product variations. Cast Member exclusive plates seem to fall victim to this type of variation, making them rare and difficult to obtain. This variation is commonly confused with "Back Variation", which deals with the back, reverse side of the plate. Bolt Hole This variation deals with the number or style of bolt holes/slots that are drilled/punched into the plates. This variation seems to occur when the plate is "re-printed" when the initial production run has been sold out. Close....But Not Quite These plates are not true variations, but get commonly confused with each other due to their similar appearance. Plates shown in this category have gone through a property name change or have similar designs featuring different themes. Error Plates listed under this category have something wrong with them and were not produced as intended. These errors are caused during production and include color registration problems, bolt hole/slot problems, missing a printing step (colors) or not being properly cut to size. Material This variation deals with the type of material the plates are produced from. So far the common materials have been aluminum and plastic. Plates listed under this category have been produced in both aluminum and plastic. This variation may be due to the cost of producing or "re-printing" a plate using a certain type of material. Most of the time the graphic image remains the same but there are times when the graphic is changed to fit the material change, which alters the look of the plate. Production This variation deals with changes made to the graphic, design or style from which the plate was initially produced. Prototypes Plates shown in the Prototype section were produced during the design stage and created as samples for design approval. Back Color and Production Variation The production variation is the style of the white border. Borders on the DW-GN-21A1 may be due to the white back as the outer white border was eliminated on the aluminum back plate. In April of 2010, Bob Allmon of California discovered the DW-GN-21A2 plate with an aluminum back with two white borders on the front.

Bolt Hole and Background Variation plus Error DW-MK-12A error plate has a red color registration problem as well as having the bolt holes drilled on the wrong side. When DW-MK-12B was produced, the dark blue background was adjusted lighter and received bolt slots instead of bolt holes.

Bolt Hole, Background Color and Production Variation One of the more interesting variations. When DW-MK-15A was produced, the right bolt hole cut out part of the image. The Blue Fairy, in the upper right corner, was obliterated by the bolt hole. When DW-MK-15B was produced, the image was adjusted so that the Blue Fairy would not be lost due to the bolt slot.

Production, Back Color, Material and Bolt Hole Variation This plate has the largest number of variations for one plate. DW-MK-17 was the first plate produced and all of the variations are based on this plate. DW-MK-18 is a Material Variation. DW-MK-19 is a Bolt Hole, Back Color and Production variation. It was produced with white lettering, white back and four bolt slots. DW-MK-20 is also a Bolt Hole, Back Color and Production variation. It was also produced with white lettering, white back, but with four short bolt slots. DW-MK-22 was also a Bolt Hole, Back Color and Production variation. It was produced with silver lettering, white back and for short bolt slots. DW-MK-25A is another Bolt Hole, Back Color and Production variation. It was produced with a white back and four short bolt slots. DW-MK-25B was produced with an aluminum back. The "aging" overprinting also added to the plate variations.

Production and Background Color Variation DW-MK-21A has a white outer border, while DW-MK-21B does not. DW-MK-21B has a darker blue background. The PhilharMagic logo on the back of the plate also differs for each plate. DW-MK-21A has the logo printed on the plate, while DW-MK-21B has the logo on a decal that is attached to the back of the plate.

Production and Back Color Variation DW-EP-12A has a thin white outer edge and an aluminum back. DW-EP-12B and DW-EP-12C both have a black edge border. DW-EP-12B has a white back, while DW-EP-12C has an aluminum back. The quality of printing on both the DW-EP-12B and DW-EP-12C plates is much sharper and cleaner than on the DW-EP-12A plate.

Production Variation These plates were pre-opening plates for Walt Disney World. The blue and green background plates were sold at the Preview Center during 1970 and 1971. The blue background plate looked so close to the real State of Florida license plate during 1970 that it was discontinued and replaced with the green background plate. The red background plate may have been a prototype and was issued to a Cast Member. It appears that there is only one of the red background plates.
