Human Beings

Running across the highway, then
Looking right and left
A pick-up truck one way
A 4-door the other.
Human beings- silly creatures- sometimes.

Pigtail flying, a jump-rope twirling
Over her head- she looks up
Toes tangled in the rope
Little girls- scatter-brained- sometimes.

Yo-yo flying around the world
Rolls back to home- it shoots out again
Bonks his finger, "ouch," pierces the air
Little boys- impetuous- sometimes.

BUT- Looking at picture books, curled in a lap
Pigtails flying- Granddad's bear hug
Yo-Yos sharing- best friend big smile
All make- Humans- worthwhile
All the time.

What do you mean--
I can't return my Happy Meal?!

What do you mean--
I can't return my Happy Meal?!
The toy is weird; the hamburger is rubber
The fries are cold--
And--My drink tastes like its four days old.
You guaranteed I'd like it, So
What do you mean--you won't keep it!!

Insignificant Anecdotes -
Images from the Student Union

A young couple sits
so their knees almost touch--yet
silence reigns
as they chew their hamburgers and fries
They look around everywhere-- except
into each other's eyes.

A white car
parked on yellow striped pavement,
with a huge black
and white "No Parking" sign behind
its rear bumper.
Stenciled into its side panel--
"BHSU Security."

A young, skinny,
raven-haired woman sits
in the Student Union
drinking a 20 oz. Diet Coke
and munching
on an open bag of Hershey's "M & M's."
