Chapter 3

Janet sat and watched in awe. Her two eldest children ate their meals, seemingly oblivious to their mother's gaze. 'They've grown' Janet thought to herself. 'No longer mine, they belong to the world'. Felicity was married and with child. Felix seemed rather serious about Izzy Pettibone, and was now at marrying age. Janet felt a pang of sadness for a moment, but then her thoughts fell to Cecily, Daniel, and her wonerful husband Alec waiting at home. Forgetting her sadness, she joined in the conversation Felix and Felicity were having.

"Felix, Avonlea's Annual Sweetheart's Picnic is coming up. Are you planning to take Izzy?"

Felix nodded. He swallowed and replied, "of course."

Felix had been involved in the war effort as well. After being shipped off to Europe, he was lost for a lengthy period of time and feared dead. Janet had nearly lost herself over it, but fortunately Felix was rescued and returned at once to Avonlea. With the expected end of the war so near, and the seriousness of Felix's broken bones, he was permitted to stay in Avonlea indefinately. Janet, for one, was overjoyed at this. She could not bare to lose him again.

After returning from the war, Felix had become much closer to Izzy. They had been great chums during childhood, and when they grew into young adults it was rumoured Felix had given Izzy her first kiss. It was not until Felix was nearly lost, though, that he realized his true feelings for Izzy and they had been nearly inseparable since.

"Where is Izzy this fine afternoon?" Janet asked.

"She's gone to Charlottetown with Mrs. Pettibone. In fact, they are buying new dresses for the picnic." Felix said upon swallowing a mouthful of sandwhich.

"Izzy has grown into a beautiful young woman." Felicity said absentmindedly. "She was such a tom-boy when we were children."

Felix smiled to himself as he remembered his childhood friend, who was now the beautiful girl he adored.

"Yes," Felix replied. "She certainly was. She's changed, but she's still my Izz- I mean Izzy underneath."

Janet and Felicity glanced at each other. Janet winked at her daughter, and continued the conversation.

"Izzy is finished school, I understand." Janet said glancing knowingly at Felicity. "What are her plans now?"

Felix shrugged his shoulders.

"I'm not really sure, Mother." He said slowly. "She was thinking of continuing her education at Queen's, but nothing is definate."

"What a wonderful idea!" Felicity exclaimed, thinking of her own lost dreams of being a doctor. "Girls these days can do anything they'd like!"

"Yes, Felicity, you're right." Felix replied quietly.

With that, the conversation was over. Janet began clearing the table, and Felicity went upstairs to rest. Felix sat at the table lost in his own world.
