Reed Waller is a comix guy, notorious for his erotic and sexually explicit work (just so you don't say I didn't warn you before sending you poking around his site).   He was working on a project called "The Tumble Box," which was supposed to be a computer-rendered comic; it mutated into a CD-ROM movie, which featured a pop band--and then he got to writing more music for the band, "and they took on a life of their own."
What's cool about Nellie: The band is entirely computer-generated.  The voices aren't computer-modified recordings; they were made by speech synthesizers.   The music is "hand-drawn" without using MIDI keyboards.  What's even cooler:  Given that, this isn't some cheap "techno" sound, but a serious attempt to do real pop music cybernetically.   As Nellie says:
"...we went through all the trouble of simulating human form and human instruments -- if we played computery music, it would destroy the whole purpose....Yes, it's every manner of pop. It's the history of pop. It's rock'n'roll, it's sixties pop, it's grunge, it's New Wave, it's Hardcore, it's Boogie Woogie, it's Benny Goodman, it's Cafe de Paris, it's Jacques Brel, it's Kurt Weill, t's Al Jolson, it's Peggy Lee, it's Duke Ellington, it's Tin Pan Alley, it's everything. But it's all funneled through the computer."
