Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and the Act for Establishing Religious Freedom lived a long and productive life. One of the foremost American architects of his time, his final major project was the design and construction of the University of Virginia. The university sponsors an excellent web site called "New Religious Movements" which details the religious nature of the Alcoholics Anonymous program. Here the university provides the link to another excellent web site called "AA Deprogramming", which provides a vast array of links and writings, from the early writings of Jefferson to those of modern, contemporary authors who debunk--indeed slam dunk the myths, dogma and abuses of the government promoted 12-Step movement. Be sure to check out the "Choose Freedom" bookstore at AA Deprogramming. Also you can check out Chapter 3 of "Resisting 12-Step Coercion" here.
