I DON'T BELIEVE……

I don't believe
That rainbows lead to pots of gold
Nor from God a promise hold
That in clouds do angels dwell
Or there's somewhere a wishing well
That Santa put presents in children's socks
And Moses got water from barren rocks
That, while some die and go to heaven
Others burn in hell with Satan
Nor do I believe the tales I'm told
By some pretty enticing maiden bold
Nor that peace will someday prevail
Or that your cheque is in the mail
The rich will someday share their wealth
Or science's promise of eternal health

But I do believe
The hunger in an urchin's eyes
Even though her stories are lies
In the pain of a bow-spined crone
Left abandoned to die alone
The woman that you would call a whore
Who gives you all and yet you ask for more
The wizen old beggar with outstretched palms
Waiting patiently to receive your alms
The adolescent hiding her pelvic gore
Defeated when you slam the door
The widow in shame turned away from home
Like some barren cow on the streets to roam
Yes, I believe their lies with all my soul
Than your truths and the falsities you extol
