The Mark of Cain
Winner of the 2016 Emanuel Fried Outstanding New Play Award
The Mark of Cain--the play the Buffalo News called “stunning” in a 4-star review and Buffalo Rising called a "fine, absorbing drama from the pages of history"--is now in paperback, available for order at Amazon or through your favorite independent bookstore.
Inspired by Clarence Darrow and the Ossian Sweet Trials, The Mark of Cain is a courtroom drama about what befalls a black family in 1925 when they dare to defend themselves against a mob determined to drive them out of their new home in a white neighborhood. With one foot in the past that inspired it and the other firmly planted in the time during which it was born, The Mark of Cain is an examination of the deep roots of institutionalized racism. Included are photos from the world premiere production at Buffalo's Manny Fried Playhouse, background notes on the the cases that inspired the play, and discussion questions for book clubs and students.
