THE MIRACLE OF THE CANDLE
The miracle of the candle was verified by a medical doctor, who tested Bernadette after the miracle with a candle flame, at which time she recognized pain and the fact the candle flame was "burning" her. This was not the case during the apparition, and was witnessed by numerous people, the doctor included. Numrous psychological tests were performed on the girl, who, it is stated, "submitted to each one."
"Doctor Dozous was present throughout the Apparition. He describes for us the scene as he watched it take place...the flame of the big candle passed between the fingers of the latter. Though fanned by a fairly strong breeze, the flame produced no effect upon the skin which it was touching." -Lourdes, Dr. Dozous; Archived Document #17

As the good doctor was making his observations, he clocked the pehnomenon. Doctor Dozous stated that "I studied the phenomenon attentively for a quarter of an hour." After the apparition had ended, Bernadette parted her hands and arose from her kneeling position. The glow, or aura on her face, which was described as ecstatic, soon left her face.
Dr. Dozous approached Bernadette before she could leave the grotto. He asked someone holding Bernadettes(?) candle, to light it and give it to him. Thus having given this instruction, he assumed possession of the candle in question, and performed the following controlled experiment. I quote:
"I put it several times in succession under Bernadettes left hand but she drew it away quickly, saying 'You are burning me!'. I record this fact just as I have seen it without attempting to explain it. Many persons who were present at the time can confirm what I have said."
To summarize, we feel that this is proof that the child was in an altered state of consciousness, as well as impervious to any mechanical damge that may have been caused during the apparition. Whether this was some type of metamorphosis caused by the close proximity of the object itself, or a desensitization of the CNS, I could only speculate. The fact remains that her flesh did not behave in a way that it normally should.
The fact remains, that the miracle of the candle was verified by a doctor of medicine. He performed a controlled experiment, ie: when he tested Bernadetted with the same candle that Bernadette was holding during the apparition, she neither registered pain, nor showed any signs of burns to her hands. It had been observed that the flame had been applied to her bare, dry flesh for over 15 minutes!
When he attempted to repeat this after the apparition had left, she immediately recognized pain and the fact that the candle flame was "burning" her. She would not allow the flame to touch her long enough to burn her, showing that she was in deed in control of her faculties, and her CNS.
