WINDSOR- WINE COUNTRY (60 MILES NORTH OF SAN FRANCISCO), CTD.

November 1, 1999- Monday- the start of another month in the San Francisco area. If the weather is anything like the last month- it will be to die for. Everyday, except for part of one afternoon, was sunny and in the 70's. Today was no exception. We drove to the Napa area and cruised through the Hess Collection of artwork at the Hess Winery. Wonderful pieces in a great setting. Then we cruised to the St. Helena area for lunch with Laurie. The restaurant is one of David and Paula's favorites Tra Vigne. It definitely hit my "expensive" button, but then I learned that I'm still a piker. $90 for three is certainly reasonable when compared to the nearby "French Laundry" restaurant that runs over $60 per person for the midday meal. The three of us enjoyed a culinary dining experience with a relaxed atmosphere. Afterwards we cruised the shops in Yountville, and some of the discount shops in Napa before splitting company and returning to the Windsor campground. Imagine discount shops with $700 cashmere jackets, reduced from $1600.

November 2, 1999, Tuesday- back to the Windsor Golf Course for our last round before moving on. It's strange for us to play the same course three times and be the "guides" to the twosome with us. The highlight of the day- was an elderly man in the foursome ahead of us. Back he came to our green- I guess looking for a club- doesn't find it, and drives right across the green in an electric cart. Maybe he was having a senior moment. Even stranger was that he and his cart mate were playing from the championship tees, when they should have be hitting from the forward tees. The mind works in a strange fashion.

Got a detailed e-mail from Phil today describing more of his trip to Nepal and Tibet. Scary to say the least. Taking trucks and jeeps through the 15000 foot passes at night on snow closed roads, the path looking more like a bobsled run. Problems with altitude sickness, cold, air pollution, and on and on. It's much better here in California.

November 3, 1999, Wednesday- it was a day to catch up on odds and ends prior to our moving tomorrow. We did squeeze in a bike ride of 13+ miles during the afternoon- past the Sonoma airport. One of the operators had 6 or 8 large flying boats, all of the same model. They must be the refurbishing experts or something on these. We've never seen so many in one place.

For the fun of it- I started to look at my computer to see if it is fully Y2K compatible. My oldest program is our accounting program- Quick Books, from 1996. So I clicked on their web pages- and the first thing I found was that they didn't test this older program as to being Y2K compliant. But, they did have a Y2K download for our windows version- so as I am writing today's log- we are downloading an hour's worth of data. Hopefully it will work- but how do you know? Finished the download- and still not sure. Can't get any real people to talk to.
