OREGON

August 17, 2000, Thursday- a 7:30 departure brought us to the Portland, OR area just after noon, as planned. Our dryer stopped delivering heat and fan, and the company that supplied the units was on our way south. After some negotiating, they agreed to have a repairman ready for us. (They were taking a crew to the FMCA rally in Maine, and the rest of the place was on a skeleton basis). I told them that I would open up the unit and remove it to the point that all they had to do was swap our the needed parts. After they installed new timers for the washer and dryer, we were on our way an hour later, and headed to Salem, Oregon. Phoenix RV was a 9.5 and 10 on the ratings, and lived up to its billing with sod grass surrounding pavement and patios. A nice place. To keep it upper crust, they only permitted gas and electric grills, no charcoal smoke. The park even provided metal stands on which to place your grill, thus preserving the plastic picnic tables.

August 18, 2000, Friday- a mid morning departure, very civilized, put us on the interstate, I-5, southbound. We arrived in the Ashland/ Medford area by mid afternoon and were lucky enough to get the last pair of center section seats for tomorrow night's performance. The town of Ashland, famous for its Shakespearean performances, is very cute and very upscale. Lots of Victorian homes, B&B's, flowers, parks, yuppie watering holes, and upscale shops. Tomorrow we'll return via the bike path, and explore some more!,

August 19, 2000, Saturday. We got the bikes out and rode on the rails to trails bike path into Ashland. Lovely ride along a stream. Good utilization by bikers, strollers and dog walkers. In town Susan found a great knitting/weaving shop and after studying every pattern book having infant clothing, selected one with a cute baby sweater for Rach and Brad's to be born in early October. The yarn selected looked so cute with soft baby colors.

Lunch was in the Standing Stone Brewery, and surprisingly, was excellent quality, quantity and reasonable prices.

After an early dinner in the coach, we returned to town for "Force of Nature" playing in one of the three theaters. Prior to the 8:30 play, a group of actors were scheduled to present a free one half hour show. At the scheduled performance time, an announcement was made that the temperatures were dropping too fast for the actors and dancers to perform, so the performance was cancelled. We chatted with one of the locals who said that the union rules contain a provision that if the temperatures could be 67 or below during the show, no show. It was 70 a half hour before show time, wimp!

Our show, however, "Force of Nature", was a wonderful performance about life, love, and nature with serious and light, humorous moments. At 2.5 hours in length, we got our money's worth of enjoyment, and then some.
