HUBBARD GLACIER

July 4, 2000, Tuesday- we traveled overnight to Yakutat Bay, and arrived at the Hubbard Glacier at noon. The sight is almost beyond words. The face of the glacier is 330 feet high and six miles wide, and the body is 76 miles long and 700 plus feet thick in spots. it has 15,000 foot surrounding peaks that are still covered with snow, and bathed in sunshine. The sight is drop dead gorgeous. The second row of peaks, actually in Canada, are the second highest in North America at 19800 feet. During the 1896 earthquake, the Hubbard Glacier moved one-half a mile in 5 minutes, as some of the beaches rose 47 feet in elevation. Now that's hauling! Thousands of Harbor Seals were visible on the millions of floating calved icebergs. Our photos just don't do the majestic vistas justice. This morning when we awoke the skies to our west were foggy and it looked like our visibility would limit the glacier experience. Fortunately we were again blessed with clearing skies and sunshine by the time we approached the 30 mile deep bay entrance for the 15 mile ride up to the glaciers.

The ladies, with the exception Mom and Elaine, all got their massages today, and time to relax in the health spa pool. They all enjoyed the treatment and relaxed with our day at sea.

INTENSE RUMMY Q!

Dinner tonight had violins and pianos playing patriotic music for July 4th. Most of us enjoyed the best dinner yet with fresh salmon.
