TUSCON, AZ; DEMING, NM; FT DAVIS, TX

November 27, 2000, Monday- Fran and Alan outdid themselves by getting up early and preparing breakfast for us. But, we still got out as planned at 8 AM. The route was west to Moab and then south towards Tucson, with an overnight stop in Tuba City, AZ, 500 miles down the road. Arriving at 3:30 into Tuba City, Susan and I both felt it was too early to stop for the night, so we blew off Tuba City and drove the remaining 350 miles into Tucson. It felt good to be back in the coach after ten days on the road! It's amazing how the miles fly with cruise control and talking books…..

THE FAMOUS MEXICAN HAT ROCK

November 28, 2000, Tuesday- to wake up in our own bed- very civilized. After unpacking and getting things back up to snuff, including a stop at the supermarket, we hit the road by mid day and started our official trek towards Florida. Tonight we stopped in Deming NM at an Escapees Park, our first in three years of membership, and were more then pleasantly surprised. We could stay free with dry camping, or for a nominal amount with full hookups. Since we had a ton of laundry we elected for the full hookups. But what sparked our interest was the daily 4 PM social hour where everyone met and traded stories, adventures, etc. Each time we had passed through Deming we only noticed a few interstate gas stations and dismissed the town as a great place to pass through at 75 MPH. This group has scheduled a mine tour of the largest copper mine in the world(?) for tomorrow. (Unfortunately for us the tour limit was already met, or we would have extended our stay). The next day they are heading to the border town into Old Mexico. One couple toured the local museum and couldn't stop raving about it. On our next pass we should schedule a week. The local golf course is $17 for 18 holes. My style!

And the election BS goes on and on and on! How many dollars per hour are being spent in Florida on these high priced lawyers? I understand that the poor tourist can't get a hotel room in several of the contested counties!

November 29, 2000, Wednesday- leaving Deming NM we headed eastbound along the 10, stopped at the Flying J as we entered Texas for fuel. Coach fuel, diesel was $152.9, better then the $1.81 in Vegas, and $1.48 for unleaded. A few more hours and we departed the interstate along state road 118. We had checked yesterday with another motorhomer and he said the road was fine. Our trucker's atlas showed it as an approved route. The woman at the state line tourist center said no problem. So off we ventured for the 49 mile ride that would take us through the Davis Mountains and past the McDonald Observatory. The first 20 miles were 65 MPH super highway. Then after a spur road headed west, our road turned into a 1 ¼ lane road. I needed both lanes to stay on the pavement. This lasted for 20 miles, around turn, over hills and dales. Fortunately we only passed one vehicle, a motor home, and we each had to stop and crawl along the grass with half our coach. After arriving at the state park we met Mike and Shirley, our friends that we met in Arizona, Breckenridge, Decatur, Yellowstone, and points prior.

THE MCDONALD OBSERVATORY

November 30, 2000, Thursday- since we are in "Texas" we have to have our vehicles inspected, so today we took the car over. What an inspection in the little town of Fort Davis! After turning on the lights and turn signals, we had a decal placed in our window, and we were $12.50 lighter. Afterwards Mike, Shirley, Susan and I drove to the top of the skyline drive in the campground, and then hiked down to Fort Davis, the National Historical Site preserving the 1851 to 1892 encampment. The 2 or 3 mile hike provided lots of ups and downs along the stone cliffs, and add to that the interesting buildings preserved in the Fort area, it was a perfect afternoon. In the evening we all piled into the car and went to see the lights outside the town of Marfa, Texas. The illuminations have been spotted sporadically since 1883 and have been attributed to lots of different causes, but none have been scientifically supported. During our two hour stay in the dark area, we did observe many lights that didn't look like they would have been car or airplane lights, sHOo I guess we got to see the mysterious light of Marta!
