While each of our lives are houses (Matthew 7:24-27) we are being built into a larger house. While 1 Corintians chapter 12 speaks of a "body", many scriptures speak of us as a house. Psalms 127:1 tells us "Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain." Paul goes into greater detail in 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 "According to the grace of God given to me like a skilled master builder. I laid a foundation and another man is building upon it. Let each man take care how he builds upon it. For no other foundation can one lay than the one which is laid which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man's work will become evident for the day will show it because it will be revealed with fire and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up he will suffer loss though he himself will be saved but only as through fire." Paul continues in Ephesians 2:19-22 "So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God. Built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grow into a holy temple in the Lord in whom you are also built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit."
These passages tell us that a) While we labor, God builds the house (balance between what God does and what we do in terms of obedience), and b) Jesus is the foundation/cornerstone, and c) Great care needs to be given as to how the house is built.
I bear a great responsibility! But God is faithful. Nevertheless, what kind of house are we to be?
A house of Accountability
