the ten spot. part 5.

SUNDAY, MARCH 29, 1998 -- We served Francisco a hearty American brunch of bacon, eggs, pancakes, English muffins, etc., finished up some tapes for him & I took him to Montparnasse to catch the Air France bus to Orly. I think it's safe to say he had a thrilling little visit to Paris. I called Kelly The Flight Attendant in the afternoon; she was planning to stay in Nikki's apartment all week, on vacation. Last night I had invited her to join us for another concert, which would be very different, on Tuesday night.

MONDAY, MARCH 30 thru WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 1998 Monday's highlight came late in the afternoon. The cab driver from early Saturday morning phoned from a nearby café, telling me to meet him downstairs in two minutes. He had my wallet! It was all I could do to keep from hugging this nice little man, especially when I looked inside & found all my stuff -- including 500 francs ($80) -- intact. I gave him 100 francs & thanked him profusely. He had been out in the countryside all weekend (you know Parisian cabbies -- he probably has a second home), but he had found the wallet on the floor of the back seat & he had gotten my phone number from my business cards. Kelly called & I checked the ticket outlet & tix were still available for Tuesday's concert, so we three went to the performance by Henry Threadgill & Dirk Roofthroot, a poetry & jazz suite based on the writings of Nobel Prize-winning poet Derek Wallcott. It was a bit strange, but that's what we had expected. We sat in the front row, which was nice. Both Kelly & I have very long legs. Afterwards we went to a Thai restaurant near Nikki's place in the historic Belleville quartier.

Marti took Kelly designer discount shopping the following afternoon (Wednesday), while Marti’s parents, Nan & John, who had arrived early that morning, napped. (We had given them the old mesclun-pasta routine for lunch, of course; it's amazing how much like a hotel 85 rue Blomet has become -- set menus already!)

My inlaws were here now. All of a sudden the Chesterfield run seemed a long time ago.
