Julien Mayfair

One of the most powerful of the Mayfair witches, he is distinct in that he is a male. Although Lasher had vowed to Deborah never to favor a male, Julien wins the spirit’s attention; his younger sister, Katherine, the actual legacy designee, shuns Lasher. Julien’s story develops from the Talamasca’s previous observations and records, his appearance in Mona’s dreams, and the oral autobiography that his ghost tells Michael Curry seventy-five years after his death.

Julien is Marguerite’s son by Tyrone McNamara, but he loves spending time with his grandmother, Marie Claudette. Born at Riverbend, he possesses greater witches’ gifts than anyone else in the family at that time. He can read minds, see events in other places, move matter and cause fires with his will, and see ghosts and auras. As a child he knows six languages. Since he can see Lasher, he asks Marie Claudette many questions and learns a great deal about the Mayfair history and the family’s powers. He also discovers the trick that can distract Lasher: by playing music, he can say things that he does not want the spirit to hear.

A highly precocious boy, he is protective of his family, and it is rumored that he murdered a boyhood tutor who was gossiping about the Mayfairs. According to previous Talamasca records, by the age of thirteen, he’s managing Riverbend plantation, taking over completely when, three years later, he accidentally shoots his uncle Augustin dead. (Julien, however claims he was fifteen when he shot Augustin.) He gains a reputation as an expert horseman, and his generosity is well known.

In personality, Julien is happy and carefree. He is energetic, and has a good sense of humor and a strong temper. He exudes great presence and charm, and has a passion for horses, theater, and opera. He is strikingly handsome, with a delicate-boned, French look; he has blue eyes and dark hair, although his hair turns white at an early age. Paintings of him appear to be vivid and lifelike, as if he has infused his cheerful, vital spirit into them.

Julien frequents the bars and brothels in New Orleans, particularly in Storyville. Sometimes he takes Katherine dressed as a man, with him. (Later he takes Mary Beth, then Stella.) He purchases the First Street property and hires Darcy Monahan to design its house. However, Darcy falls in love with Katherine, and their marriage enrages Julien so much that he refuses to visit the house. Only after Darcy dies does Julien come to assist his beloved sister, who was half-mad with grief. As a result of their incestuous union, Katherine bears Mary Beth, the next witch to inherit the legacy. Julien continues to live at Riverbend but establishes as office at First Street. When Lasher leads him to believe that fathering Mary Beth fulfills Lasher’s purpose for him, he finds another way to make him himself useful by allowing Lasher to possess his body.

Julien then marries Suzette and has four children: Jeannette, Barclay, Garland, and Cortland. He moves into First Street with his brother Remy’s family.

Julien's death is accompanied by the traditional witche's storm caused by Lasher, where his sister's (Katherine, the designated heiress) was not.
