This is a quote by Ashlar, the taltos, or Ash as he prefers to be called now. He is beyond centuries old. He's known all kinds of cultures, hardships, pleasures, and agonies. He was once even considered a saint. He was known as St. Ashlar because he was so devoted to the Christian God that he allowed the massacre of his own people.
He's probably the last survivor of the first taltos to come into the human world. In the novel "Taltos", The Mayfair family meets Ash. Rowan and Michael specifically. When Ash hears of Lasher, the taltos born to Rowan, he contacts the Mayfair family to request a meeting and to return a young man one of his friends recovered from Scotland.
Ashlar has been involved off and on w/ the Talamasca for centuries and knows them well. One of their investigators, Yuri, is almost killed while looking in one of the glens of Scotland, trying to recover some information that would help lead to new information on the murder of his mentor and a newly accepted member of the Mayfair family, Aaron Lightner.
Yuri is shot there in the glen, but not fatally. He is rescued by a small dworf-like man named Samuel. Samuel is Ashlar's oldest and probably dearest friend and is the one who tell's Ash of the taltos involved w/ the Mayfair family and Yuri. This is how Ashlar becomes connected to the Mayfair family.
Curious about the other taltos, Lasher, and desperate to find his own kind, he contacts the Mayfairs and once they meet, also helps to discover the truth behind the murder of Aaron Lightner and attempted murder on Yuri.
Throughout the Mayfair's aquaintece w/ Ash, he tells them of his life. Of the paradise where he lived w/ no one but his own kind, until they migrated into human lands where they met cruelty and desparation. And he tells of how they slowly dwindled down to so few of his own kind to the point where he is forced to wonder if he is the last...
