QUEENS OF THE 'BASSKAP'

[ In deference to black women domestics in South Africa]

Robin M. Chandler

When courage finds you stepping
into the gilded crucible of violence
Humility and a sense of shame
( one's only departure from the beast )
will make you blush.

Overwhelming dawn,
egoli sidewalks, bus depots, mansion gates
flourish with the ancient busy-ness of calloused feet.

In public and private moments
my eyes labor to meet theirs,
most avoiding the gaze through invisibility.......
