They drove out to the desert with another couple, Travis and Adelaide Holloway. The family doctor recommended such a vacation for Mother, who was, as we were told later, "on the verge of a nervous breakdown." The time would have been 1947, a year before Jan was born. They look happy enough here, Mother downright radiant.
