ArcaMaxHealth Tips - March 17, 2000 -THE DOWN SIDE OF VIAGRA: Since the drug sildenafil (Viagra) has been on the market, the Food and Drug Administration has received nearly 1,500 reports of adverse side effects. About a third of the people involved, died, mostly due to cardiovascular causes. Doctors already know that patients with coronary heart disease should not use the drug. However, most of the 500-some deaths occurred in men who were not known to have heart disease, and were under 65 years old. The majority of the men died within 4 to 5 hours after taking the drug. The findings were presented at the annual research meeting of the American College of Cardiology by Dr. Sanjay Kaul and colleagues of Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. It has been thought that the primary danger for patients with coronary disease in using Viagra was because these patients also tend to use nitroglycerin for chest pain, and the two drugs don't mix well. Now, researchers are wondering whether there are some susceptible individuals for whom Viagra is harmful without being combined with nitrates. Showing up in two leading fashion magazines this winter is a multi-page advertising spread for a couturier that pairs the obligatorily skinny woman in provocative poses with an enormous dog in a studded leather collar. Lest the not-so-subliminal message in this advertising campaign be lost, there are pages of "playful" encounters between them. The first shows the model, clad in a dress slit up to her posterior, bending over the dog and putting a leather mask over his head -- the mask and the spiked collar being well-recognized accoutrements of sadomasochism.Turning the page, we find this girl and her dog in a rather compromising position -- she, on her haunches; the dog on its hind legs, draped over her back. She is clutching the dog's fore legs, which are wrapped around her shoulders -- one paw tucked inside her open jacket, under which she is nude. The model's eyes are closed, and she has a blissful look on face. It's harder to read the dog's face, even though he has changed his leather hood for a spiked muzzle. The last photo shows the woman seated, bent double over her knees and holding onto her ankles. Since very little dress is showing, I guess this ad is selling her shoes, which are definitely suitable for kinky sex, complete with spike heels, ankle straps and rhinestones. The dog obviously likes them, too, as he is licking her feet. The model's expression is ecstatic, if not downright orgiastic. So, here we are. The leading women's fashion magazines have accepted these ads that sell clothes by not-so-subtly depicting bestiality and sadomasochism. Do they really believe their readers would find this appealing? How many women do you know that long to have sex with their dogs? As a nation, we have become so desensitized to the immoral and the reprehensible that ads like these can run in not one, but at least two (that I know of) national women's magazines. And let's not forget, it was his state that dropped the ball on the Ramsey case. P.S. Is the governor of Colorado planning to attack NBC's Katie Couric? In her ongoing interview with the pair, she hasn't been asking the Ramseys anything new or especially forceful. This is essentially a no-win situation for a TV journalist. Unlike a Perry Mason episode, the suspects aren't going to break down and confess. They know all the questions; they have all the answers. It's a matter of attitude. And I thought Barbara's attitude was completely correct -- hard-eyed, properly skeptical but realistically humane. As for the governor's thesis that Tom Brokaw or Peter Jennings might have done better with the Ramseys, that's just sexist.

LAURA' -Hundreds of demonstrators showed up Tuesday at Paramount Studios in Hollywood to protest the studio's plans for a TV talk show starring radio talker Laura Schlessinger. The event was organized by a coalition of gay rights groups, including the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). Protestors want Paramount to cancel "Dr. Laura" before the show even goes on the air, because of the way she depicts homosexuality on her radio show and other public forums. Schlessinger issued a statement earlier this month more or less apologizing if her comments hurt anybody, but also reiterating that her views are based on biblical teaching. A biblical scholar at Tuesday's demonstration got a cheer from the crowd when she asked : "Why has Dr. Laura chosen oppression theology over liberation theology?"
