The Poetry Of..
Suzanne Aubin............................................
You told me you loved me
You told me you loved me
and I stayed still
for a long time
with the phone
in my hands
then I lit candles
in every room
and walked in circles
between them
whispering to myself
stepping out
only to ask you
for a dance
No complications
Warm, sand surfaces
feet sinking in
a round imprint
for the heel
water receding
a few pebbles
amongst the shells
a comb running through
thick, wet hair
gliding as through honey
a duvet, lifting
and falling
all warmth
and lightness
a warm cocoon
of graying light
all is smooth
no regrets
no complications
Miners' Path
It is cool
on the Miners' Path
a dark and shaded
trail curving
by the creek
ants scurrying
wooden stairways
to higher levels
The heat does not penetrate
where men used to trudge
to work
bent under heavy loads
Women waited for them
ironing shirts
the supper bubbling
on the wood stove
sweat trickling down their backs
staining their only
weekday dress
