The Poetry Of...
Jan Oskar Hansen..................................

Twilight

Now that rain has stopped,
the mountain range is a pencil
stroke against a pale sky;
the rain-lake is moody blue,
aware of its transient nature.

Chimney smoke whispers
in winter air, paints a picture
of past life and loneliness;
will you share my evening?
Must I wait a little longer.

Estrangement

Walked on a lawn full of
toys, they didn't hear me;
screaming children, sharp
voices, giggle and rows.

Rays of light kept fleeing
through the drawn curtain,
absorbed up by a night
that hungered for radiance.

A family huddled together
sheltering from an unkind
world, didn't like to be
here, but I was one of them.

Should have stayed, at the
inn, played cards, roving
through the night, in haze
of wine, with the itinerates.

November Wedding

Sleet fell on that day, made roads slippery,
at the inn our room was cold, and we had
no coins for the meter; in a rash moment
had asked her to marry me, now that it was
reality panic set in, how to get out of this?

Went down to the bar for change, had a
few drinks and delayed going up as long
as I civilly could, hoped she was asleep.

Clung to me like a limpet and screamed,
which I thought was for the benefit of other
guests. I was dark when I got up, stealthily
got out, an early bus to the coast, the sea
was my salvation I could breathe again.
