The Poetry Of...
Nathan A. Baker.....................................
Life's Ocean
The old sailor sits pondering the seasons
Sixty-two winters- forty years
Of dragging anchor weighted with
The woes of the Englishman's daughter
Sixty-two years of sailing his vast ocean
Fighting scurvy and pestilence
Laden down with sad burdens
At times unbearable- overwhelming.
Captain of one, he muses his folly
Simmering in blue solitude,
His reflected strength still tangled
In knotted nets of duplicity
Sweet ties, sticky as the flow of sorghum molasses,
But some as cold as an Arctic freeze and unthawing
Mustang Sally
Headed down a country road
With my own slice of heaven
Detroit chrome and steel
Mustang Fastback '67
Sucking death out of a cigarette
Pedal to the metal floor
Two hundred horses tugging
Could have used two hundred more
Seventeen years can be a lifetime
And thirty minutes a lifetime too
When a boy's faced with a decision
That would tear a grown man in two
Sally wove her magic and cast her lustful spell
But virtue won the race and rang victory's bell
Land Slides
Long hair athletic tee
Blue jeans faded and torn at the knee
Hopeful look in her big brown eyes
Green backpack beneath an August sky
And we're headed up to Tellico
Going to pan for gemstones in its flow
Campout on the fertile land
Find a big ruby for a golden band
Warm glances and cool nights
Sooner or later we're going to get things right
Hot feelings stirring in both our souls
We'd better head back to flatter land
Before things really start to rock and roll
Lured with a glance hit with an avalanche
