The Poetry Of...
Michael Rivet............................................................
Elsewhere

Shadows are long on high sun days -
Crinkly crimson gold leaves paint an October day
Fauvists would have little trouble depicting.
The mood soft, still but rumbling, like zoo attractions;
Slowly the shadows mill about, conversations muted
Innocuous - some just stare
Smoke curling away by the tiniest of breezes.

I stare back anger like a red aura seething -
Leather, chains, dark clothes somber faces ghost walk
Occupying space but just passing through -
Blue skies yellowed, everything aged like a spry old man.
Shades of gray is what we are:
Gathering, departing aimless -
But, sometimes the day is warm, water cool
Waiting for the bus to come and go elsewhere.

Autumn's Jubilee

Scarcely, the mid-afternoon sun
Invades the gloaming woods
Where, almost black, evergreen hangs on
Even as the uppermost leaves
Fall, a yellowed carpet
Fore sage of hidden chills -

Crystal ripples, serene shimmer
Reflections of summers gone
Boaters pantomime
Rituals reminiscent
Of recreation past times
The humidity giving way to sweaters.

Momentarily, like a jewel,
The lowest branches glow
And flare out, declination begun
Sky blue clear, solitary to this spot
We gather around the fire ring
Celebrating autumn's jubilee.

My Daughter on an October Morning

Car asleep in leaves cerise
Left crimson
In embarrassment

Summer off-roading washed away -

Seagulls clamor o'er crumbs
Looping their way
Southerly

Last bird to leave shut the door -

Water stammers away
Gelid argument
Still down river

Skeletal trees shedding tears -

Woolly mittens, scratchy scarf
Ears bright red
Sibilant sniffles

Autumn announced, "Winter's here!"
