Holiday Greetings
Who I wish had been here
Was my mermaid
Now an ocean and a heart away
Thinking not of me
Although she had once sung to me
And had (almost) loved me
(maybe just a little)
Briefly
One summer ages and ages and ages ago
But those who were here had a happy thanksgiving
At The Pond
I did not see her at the pond
Though I long waited there
But I saw her walking up the hill
Wearing a bathing suit she wore the year
I called our year.
And I saw her on the bench in the forest nearby
Where she had sat that summer
And at the lighthouse beach
Where I discovered that I loved her
Where the light caught her from time to time
As she stood beneath the blossoming autumn moon
As I passed the bay I saw her beating on the Beagle
She is everywhere these warm soft foggy days
No spirit but my heart
Smiling at me with those shining eyes
That had made me think for a moment
She loved me.
Thanksgiving Night
Under the full moon of thanksgiving
I walked on the beach
Where she had come to me this summer
Hurrying to me in the sand
To smile at me and take my hand
Risking misinterpretation
How I loved her at that moment
Behind her were the hopeful waves
For a time we did not speak
We were together
This really happened
Later on that same beach
There was a harder moment
But for that first touch of her hand
I will always give thanksgiving
