The Poetry Of
Kenneth Widmerpool

Dragonflies

I went down to the pond to be with you
Of course you were still there
Your smile rose from the water
Your laughter sparked the air
Our moments spun around me
Acknowledged by the redwings and the dragonflies.
I sat on the bench where you snuggled in your towel
Your head shouldered and shy
The space around it was warm and full
Of course, you were still there.

Mooring

The bay was beautiful today
One Beetle Cat was on it
Running in light wind toward Jackknife Cove
I pretended you were single handing it
Would soon moor and would
Be at the house in an hour.

I Love You Never Doubt That

Nearer a year to what she will be
She is more wondrous and more magik.
We are not as we were
She will not sing our songs to me.
She will not ask, 'how will I live without you?'
As she had last summer
Sun in her hair
Walking last moments from the pond.
Now I prepare for her once more to leave
It will be silent again and cold
But she may think of me
May write to me
Now and again from time to time
Although she will never say, 'I love you, never doubt that.'
And all is all as all must be.
