The Poetry Of.
Kenneth Widmerpool...................
Shining Sea
I said to her 'my mermaid'
'My poet' she said to me
That was a sunlit moment
Standing in our shining sea.
Although I am disfigured
If not in face by time
She gave me that shining moment
Standing in our sunlit sea.
Hearing
That night she was as she had been
That once in a lifetime warmest summer
Under our first full moon
Wine and song and laughter
And a whisper
Was that whisper
What I hope it was?
Did she whisper it again
In the light of another full moon?
Imposters
We are not who we played that summer.
I not the wise and gentle poet
You not the brave young woman
Looking with courage toward your future.
We were imposters for each other
Acting out our summer roles
In summer costumes
Pretending to be anima and animus
As in a summer theatre.
Perhaps if love had lasted
Either agape or eros
We might be now what we had pretended.
And not only for each other.
Ah those sunny salty days.
Does not love
Conquer all?
