The Poetry Of..
Kenneth Widmerpool..................

Water Nymph

You are the brightness on the water
You are the dew upon the earth
You are the white wind blowing on the bay

No evil shall befall you
No shadow shall enthrall you
No darkness fall upon your way

You are the honeyed summer morning
You are the sweetened breeze of eve
You are the laughter heard from far away

No darkness shall befall you
No evil shall enthrall you
No shadow fall upon your way

You are the lovely nymph of Pushkin
Sitting by the lakeside's glade
Then splashing, calling, 'monk come with me'
Vanishing in an instant leaving only empty shade.

No shadow shall befall you
No darkness shall enthrall you
No evil fall upon your way

Sacraments

In the dinghy she pressed her feet against my knees
And I could feel the rhythm of her body as she rowed
It was a Sacrament. Revelation. Epiphany.
Unlike another Sacrament
That not to be repeated kiss that Sunday after Church.
That is in all the senses of that word- a Mystery.

Mets 4 Braves 3

In the train
Surrounded by the baseball fans
Loud but not aggressive
A couple kissed across from us
She took my hand
"Should I tell you when I fall in love?"
She asked.
It was a silencing question.
She spoke of this that year before.
"Of course," said, "you must.
What would we be if you didn't?"
Then I saw a moment when
Another would be in her heart and lips
And wondered if God would be so kind
It did not happen 'till I died.
