COLD MAPLE SYRUP
As time passed slowly like cold maple syrup
We traveled on two separate lines of life
Without ever knowing they were intertwined
Hearts lost in the cold handshake
Which slowly progressed into the quick hug and pat
And we forced ourselves to laugh
Because we would cry our eyes out if we didn't
Every word with a hidden message
Lying in wait to be discovered
For it was too scared to show its face on its own
Although so much seemed to fit
Everyday was a new beginning
Forever knowing that there was a shoulder to cry on
But never trusting it
Slowly the memories slip through the cracks
Of the wandering minds
Although they are not lost
Questioning the security of the word
The sheltered definition of love
Bound by restraints
These chains which he himself made
Walls which he never considered tearing down
The knowledge of the forbidden dream creeps in
While his eyes are wide shut
And he misses his cue
Trying to remember his next line
Young actor that he has become
Why is it so hard to put that emotion out now?
What makes me off limits?
And yes, the questions grow
And yes, the ending is never known
And yes, you love me
And no, I won't leave
So while the time continues to slip by
Slowly like cold maple syrup
I wait.
