Having graduated from the Virginia Military Academy, Marshall fought in WW1 and served as aid to Pershing in the years following the war. He was appointed cheif of staff of the Army in 1939 and served in that position untill the end of the war. He was an ardent advocate of carrying the war into western Europe as soon as possible, displeasing the British in the process. After the war, he was resposible for the "Marshall plan" which aimed to rebuild western Europe.
