General George Smith Patton Jr. was born on 11 November 1885 in San Gabriel, California. He had one of the most famous military careers of the 20th century.He served under General Pershing's in Mexico and during world war 1. He joined the new tank corps and remained there until 1920 when it was abolished at Fort Meade, Maryland. He held several staff jobs in Hawaii and Washington, DC after WW1. Completed his schooling at the Army war college and distinguished himself. He then served as control officer for mechanized maneuvre in Georgia and Louisiana, which was a test of the mechanized concept of the army.
When the armoured force was created in 1940 at Fort Knox, Patton was transfered to the 2nd armoured division in Fort bennings, Georgia and was then named commanding general on 11 April 1941.
November 8 1942, Patton was comander of the western task force landing in North Africa. Following the American defeat at Kasserine Pass, he was given command of all US forces in the Tunisian Combat area.
Patton was the commander of the 7th Army during the Scicily invasion in July of 1943 and departed this post in March 1944 when he was given command of the 3rd Army. In October 1945, he assumed command of the 15th Army in Occupied Germany. December 21st 1945, Patton died in Germany as a result of an automobile accident. General Patton is burried in the same cemetery as the soldiers who died in the battle of the bulge in Hamm, Luxemburg.
