INT. CASEY'S LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Casey walks into the house and drops her backpack on the floor. She reclines the couch and puts her feet up on the coffee table. Conor comes down the stairs.

                                                            CONOR

                                                Hey.

                                                            CASEY

Hey. What are you doing here?

                                                            CONOR

I needed to pick up some things. I

                                                have another appointment in 40

                                                minutes.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (yawns)

If it's in LA, you better get going.

                                                Traffic's heavy.

                                                            CONOR

I'm leaving now. But I wanted to tell

you that I need a favor.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Shoot.

                                                            CONOR

Richard and I along with the head of

the partners' committee are playing a

round at the Bel Air Country Club.

Richard's invited you to play with us.

                                                I want you to come.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Tee-off time?

                                                            CONOR

                                                6.

                                                            CASEY

                                                In the morning, I assume.

                                                            CONOR

                                                Yes.

Casey sits up.

                                                            CASEY

Let me get this straight. You want me

to wake up at 3:30 in the morning to

get ready, drive all the way to

Beverly Hills, play a full round, then

go to a really long play rehearsal

filled with lines and acting and sword

training, and still manage to go my

Halloween party that night? I'll end

                                                up hospitalized from exhaustion.

                                                            CONOR

Just go to sleep really early Friday

                                                night.

            CASEY

                                                I can't. It's the Homecoming game.

                                                            CONOR

Casey, if there's ever a time I really

need a favor from you, it's now.

                                                            CASEY

I do you lots of favors.

                                                            CONOR

                                                Casey Vanderbilt Whitney Farrell, you

are going, and that is final.

She reclines again and picks up the tv remote.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Whatever.

He grabs his briefcase from the dining room table and leaves.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (to herself)

                                                I have a paper due tomorrow, don't I?

She switches off the tv.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (sighs)

                                                Shit.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. MARINE BIOLOGY - MORNING

Casey shuffles into class, yawning. She sits down and drops her backpack, and rests her head on Jamie's shoulder.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (smiles)

                                                What's wrong with you?

                                                            CASEY

I'm tired. What are you doing for

                                                Halloween?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Why?

                                                            CASEY

I just wanted to know if you wanted to

                                                go to Leah's Halloween party.

                                                            JAMIE

Oh, my dad said I couldn't go.

                                                            CASEY

                                                What? Why?

                                                            JAMIE

Something about sex, drugs, rock and

roll, and not knowing Leah or her

                                                parents. You know, standard parent

                                                stuff.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Damn.

                                                            JAMIE

But you go. We can hang out the night

                                                of Halloween.

                                                            CASEY

                                                What are you doing then?

                                                            JAMIE

Clark and I were going to take Alice

                                                trick-or-treating.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Is your dad going?

                                                            JAMIE

No, he's going to stay at the house to

                                                give out candy.

                                                            CASEY

Ok then, I'm up for it.

                                                            JAMIE

Why don't you want to meet my dad?

                                                            CASEY

Because I'm too young to die.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (laughs)

He wouldn't kill you. I think.

                                                            CASEY

That's very reassuring. I've lived in

fear of this time. The time when

little Casey grows up and gets

threatened with shotgun violence by a

father trying to protect his daughter.

It's still very common in the South,

                                                you know.

                                                            JAMIE

Well, this is California. You'd be

                                                threatened with knife violence here.

Casey pinches her.

                                                            CASEY

You just keep going and going, don't

                                                you?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Like the Energizer bunny.

Casey yawns again.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Why are you so tired?

                                                            CASEY

I was up forever doing an essay.

                                                            JAMIE

Let me guess, you didn't even start

the essay until last night and it's

                                                due today.

                                                            CASEY

You know me so well. Even then, I

                                                tried to stall some more.

                                                            JAMIE

Maybe you should try starting things

early next time. You're about to fall

                                                asleep.

                                                            CASEY

Nonsense. I do my best work when I

                                                procrastinate until the last minute.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (laughs)

                                                Right.

                                                            CASEY

I do. Once I tried to do something

                                                early, I ended up getting a 'C'. I

                                                produce 'A' plus material under

                                                pressure.

                                                            JAMIE

Well, I'll believe it when you show me

the grade you get for this paper.

                                                            CASEY

Deal. And that reminds me, your

brother still owes 10 bucks for that

                                                bet.

                                                            JAMIE

I'll tell him. What time did you

                                                finally get to bed?

                                                            CASEY

                                                4:45.

                                                            JAMIE

Jesus, Casey. It's not even 7:45 right

                                                now.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Ugh, I know.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. GEOMETRY - LUNCH

People start to pack up as class winds down. Casey rubs her eyes.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Where's Chris?

                                                            MIA

I don't know. He might be sick but I

                                                haven't heard from him.

                                                            CASEY

That wasn't him texting you during

                                                class?

                                                            MIA

No, that was Leah. There's a change of

                                                plans for Saturday.

The bell rings and they get up and head out.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Oh, yeah?

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS

                                                            MIA

Yeah. Turns out her mom is going to be

home this weekend after all so she

can't have the party at her house.

                                                            CASEY

That's too bad. Where's it going to be

                                                then?

                                                            MIA

                                                My place.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (grins)

                                                Good times.

                                                            MIA

                                                So you're coming?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yeah.

                                                            MIA

                                                Is Jamie coming with you?

                                                            CASEY

Uh, no. Her dad told her she couldn't

                                                go so...

She shrugs.

                                                            MIA

Bummer. I suppose she listens to her

                                                parents all the time.

                                                            CASEY

Yeah, apparently it's the normal thing

                                                to do.

                                                            MIA

Do you ever listen to your dad?

                                                            CASEY

Sure. When I want. Usually it's when

he needs me to do something for him.

But when he tries to tell me what to

do when it doesn't really involve him,

                                                no.

                                                            MIA

Mmm. Same here. I remember when my dad

tried to tell me I couldn't go to my

first party. I so didn't listen to

                                                him.

                                                            CASEY

Did you tell him you weren't going to

                                                listen to him?

                                                            MIA

No. I told him I was going to a

friends' house to spend the night. I

never openly defy him. I just keep it

                                                under the radar.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Nice.

                                                            MIA

I like to let him think he's in

                                                charge. Things stay pretty pleasant

                                                that way.

                                                            CASEY

Maybe I should employ that tactic.

                                                We're always arguing.

                                                            MIA

                                                Maybe you should.

                                                            CASEY

                                                I don't know though. I think I would

                                                feel weird lying to him.

                                                            MIA

                                                (laughs)

You have no problem telling him off

but you feel bad when you lie?

                                                            CASEY

Yeah. At least this way I'm open about

it, and I own up to it.

                                                            MIA

                                                (shrugs)

Stick to your system then, and I'll

                                                stick to mine.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

EXT. QUAD - CONTINUOUS

Mia puts on her sunglasses as they step outside.

                                                            MIA

You know, sometimes our lives suck

ass, Casey, but other times, they

                                                really rock.

                                                            CASEY

Yeah, we've got so much more freedom

                                                than other kids.

                                                            MIA

                                                Not to mention obscenely large

                                                allowances and access to platinum

                                                credit cards.

                                                            CASEY

                                                You're telling me.

Casey spots Jamie and Clark.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Alright, see you later.

She starts to turn to head over to the Playhouse.

                                                            MIA

                                                Wait, hold on.

                                                            CASEY

                                                What?

                                                            MIA

What are you doing tomorrow night?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Nothing, really. Why?

                                                            MIA

                                                Ok, I totally can't believe I haven't

invited you before, but every Thursday

we all go to Taco Surf for dinner and

hang out. Talk about anything and

                                                everything. That kind of stuff.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (pouts)

Mia, I've been here for almost a month

and you're just now telling me about

                                                this?

                                                            MIA

                                                I know.

Casey puts a hand over her heart.

                                                            CASEY

                                                I'm crushed.

                                                            MIA

                                                (laughs)

I know! It's just that we don't invite

new people very often. I guess I had

                                                to be sure.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (narrows her eyes)

That I was good enough for you people?

                                                            MIA

                                                No! I mean.. you..

                                                            CASEY

                                                (laughs)

Calm down. I'm just messing with you.

I know what you mean. I'll go.

                                                            MIA

                                                (grins)

Excellent. Do you know where it is?

                                                            CASEY

Nope, but I'm sure my handy dandy GPS

                                                system does. What time?

                                                            MIA

Come around 7. Usually we're there by

then. Just come on in and find us.

                                                            CASEY

I hate looking for people. It's hard.

                                                            MIA

It's really not with us. We're 'those

                                                people'.

She makes the little quotes marks with her hands.

                                                            CASEY

What the hell are 'those people'?

                                                            MIA

You know, the group of people in the

restaurant that are scenic and loud

and everyone asks to be moved away

                                                from them?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (nods)

                                                Oh, 'those people'.

                                                            MIA

                                                Yeah.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Gotcha.

                                                (grins)

I'll just follow the sound of your big

                                                mouth.

                                                            MIA

                                                Hey!

She smacks Casey's shoulder.

                                                            CASEY

God, what is it with me? Why do girls

always hit me? Jamie, Andrea, Meagan,

                                                you...

                                                            MIA

                                                Probably because you always deserve

                                                it.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (narrows her eyes)

Keep it up and one of these days I

really will do something that truly

                                                merits a slap.

                                                            MIA

                                                (grins)

                                                Oooh, promise?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (laughs)

                                                Sure.

                                                            MIA

I look forward to it. See you

                                                tomorrow.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Alright.

Casey leaves.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

EXT. PLAYHOUSE - CONTINUOUS

Casey comes up, bearing more McDonald's, just as Jamie's walking the other way.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Where are you going?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Bathroom. Be right back.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Ok.

Casey sits down next to Clark and holds out her hand.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Pay up.

                                                            CLARK

                                                Huh?

                                                            CASEY

You lost the bet. It rained again,

                                                remember?

                                                            CLARK

                                                Oh, yeah.

He pulls out his wallet and opens it. It's empty. He holds it open and turns it upside down, an old piece of white paper falling out.

                                                            CLARK

                                                Uhhh...

                                                            CASEY

                                                (laughs)

Never mind. I get great satisfaction

                                                from knowing that I won.

                                                            CLARK

No, I never back out on a bet. How

about I come over and clean your room

                                                for a week?

                                                            CASEY

My room doesn't need cleaning. It's

                                                clean already.

                                                            CLARK

Well, it'll get dirty again eventually

right? I mean, you don't exactly

                                                strike me as the uh...

He watches her root around the bottom of her messy backpack. She finally pulls out her water bottle and takes a sip.

                                                            CLARK

.. neat and organized kind of person.

Clark grabs her water bottle and holds it up. Casey nods and he takes a drink. Andrea comes over to sit by them.

                                                            CASEY

Sure, but the maid cleans my room.

He coughs.

                                                            ANDREA

                                                What, are you that lazy?

                                                            CASEY

No. We've always had a maid.

                                                            CLARK

                                                You're serious.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Sure.

                                                            CLARK

                                                Ooh, does she like..

                                                (British accent)

..wear a uniform and live in the

                                                servants quarters?

                                                            CASEY

Hardly. She comes by on Mondays,

                                                Wednesdays and Fridays. She doesn't

live with us, and doesn't wear a

                                                uniform.

                                                            CLARK

So you've never really cleaned up

                                                after yourself?

                                                            CASEY

                                                No. Is that so wrong?

                                                            CLARK

                                                Uh, no. Not at all.

She regards him for another moment, then goes back to eating.

                                                            ANDREA

Are you guys going to the Homecoming

                                                game?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Of course.

                                                            CLARK

Yeah, I talked Jamie into it, so we're

                                                going too.

                                                            ANDREA

We should all hang out afterwards.

                                                            CASEY

I can't. I have to go home and sleep.

                                                            ANDREA

Geez, Casey. Such a party animal.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (laughs)

Yeah, yeah. I'd go, but I have to get

up really early the next day.

                                                            CLARK

We'll just have to get into trouble

                                                without you.

                                                            ANDREA

                                                Do you have AOL, Casey?

                                                            CASEY

Friends don't let friends do AOL.

                                                            ANDREA

                                                (rolls her eyes)

                                                Do you have AIM then?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yeah.

                                                            ANDREA

                                                What's your screen name?

                                                            CASEY

                                                JaneBond007.

                                                            ANDREA

                                                Ok.

                                                            CLARK

What's wrong with AOL? I have AOL.

                                                            CASEY

I don't like it at all.

                                                            CLARK

                                                At all.

Jamie comes back and sits next to Casey.

                                                            CASEY

Well, not that's not entirely true. I

like the options you get from AOL when

                                                you're picking smiley faces.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                I like the pirate ones.

                                                            CASEY

Yeah, those are cool. The gay pride

ones crack me up. If you're gay, you

can't have a normal smiley face; you

have to have a specific smiley that

lets others know you're not just

happy, like anyone else, you're happy

and gay at the same time.

                                                            CLARK

                                                (laughs)

You know, I never thought about that.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

EXT. QUAD - CONTINUOUS

Chris arrives.

                                                            MIA

Where the hell have you been?

                                                            CHRIS

                                                (grins)

Good to see you too, lover girl.

Mia smacks his ass before he sits down.

                                                            MIA

                                                I'm serious. Where were you?

                                                            CHRIS

                                                I slept late.

                                                            MIA

You know Chris, I think it's time

you've invested in something called an

alarm clock. I hear all the cool kids

                                                are doing it.

                                                            CHRIS

You sound like Casey. She's rubbing

                                                off on you.

                                                            MIA

Speaking of, I just talked to her.

                                                            CHRIS

                                                Are things still weird?

                                                            MIA

No, not at all actually. I've decided

to pretend like we didn't have that

little 'talk', and now things are back

                                                to the way they were.

                                                            CHRIS

And you're completely fine with that?

                                                            MIA

Not completely, but I'm ok. It's

better this way. I flirt, she flirts,

                                                nothing happens, but we're good

friends and we have fun together.

                                                            CHRIS

Good times. Now we just need to find

you a girlfriend to fill your other

                                                'needs'.

                                                            MIA

                                                You are so obscene sometimes.

                                                            CHRIS

                                                It's my best quality.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

EXT. PLAYHOUSE – AFTERNOON

Casey walks up to the Playhouse for rehearsal but finds a paper posted on the door.

                                                            CASEY

                                                What the...

She reads the paper. Jamie comes up from behind her and puts her chin on her shoulder.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Hey. What's that?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Apparently there's no rehearsal today.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                What?

Casey points to the paper.

                                                            CASEY

It says, 'Rehearsal is canceled for

today. I have the flu. I don't want to

risk getting my cast, or anyone else

for that matter, sick. I expect

everyone to get together with their

primary castmates during this time to

rehearse on your own. Please sign the

                                                sign-in sheet below.'

                                                            JAMIE

Now you can go home and take a nap.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (shakes her head)

No way. We're going to rehearse.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                You're about to fall asleep.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (petulantly)

                                                No, I'm not.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (grins)

If you say so. Let's go rehearse at

your house then. You know, just in

                                                case you fall asleep.

Casey reaches out and tickles her. Clark approaches them.

                                                            CLARK

                                                What's going on?

                                                            CASEY

                                                There's no rehearsal.

Clark pumps his fist.

                                                            CLARK

                                                Score! I need a break.

                                                            JAMIE

We only rehearse like, two days a

                                                week.

                                                            CLARK

I know. But I still need a break.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Lazy ass.

                                                            CLARK

                                                (grins)

                                                Like you aren't?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (grins)

Not today. We're going to go rehearse

                                                at my house.

Jamie gets out a pencil and signs the sheet.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Let's go then.

                                                            CASEY

What are you going to do?

                                                            CLARK

I'm gonna wait for Andrea. We'll

probably hang out. If we get bored, is

it alright if we come by over to your

                                                place?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Call us if you do.

                                                            CLARK

                                                Alright.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Later, Clark.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. CASEY'S BEDROOM – LATER

Casey and Jamie enter Casey's room. Jamie dumps her backpack on Casey's desk chair and hops onto the bed. Casey notices the blinking light on her answering machine, and she presses a button to play the message.

                                                            SHANNON

                                                (on machine)

Casey Farrell, this is another reason

why I love you more than words can

express. You can eat lasagna in the

ungodly hours of the night and not

gain an ounce, and could probably eat

it every single day of the week, no

                                                problem. Call me.

Casey laughs and deletes the message.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Was that Shannon?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yeah.

Casey grabs the phone and sits down next to Jamie. She dials a number and waits while it rings.

                                                            SHANNON

                                                (answering machine)

Hey, I'm not here. Leave a message.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Shannon Farrell, here's a reason why I

love you more than words can express.

The smell of your perfume reminds me

of vodka. Now it's your turn to call

me. I'll be home all night tonight.

She hangs up.

                                                            JAMIE

You never told me much about your

                                                family. Aside from Shannon.

Casey lies back and puts her hands behind her head.

                                                            CASEY

Well, do you really want to know? It's

a long story and not a rosy one.

                                                            JAMIE

Yeah. I do. But only if you want to

                                                talk about them.

                                                            CASEY

Sure. We might want to stock up on

                                                refreshments however.

She starts to sit up, but Jamie puts a hand on her shoulder and stops her.

                                                            JAMIE

Nope. You stay here. I'll go get

                                                stuff.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Ok.

                                                (smiles)

                                                Thanks.

Jamie gets up and heads downstairs.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. CASEY'S KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS

Jamie enters the kitchen and to her surprise finds a young Latina woman inside. Jamie gasps.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Oh my..

                                                            NATALIA

                                                (startled)

                                                Dios Mío. ¿Quién es usted?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Uhhh...

                                                            NATALIA

                                                Usted habla Español?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (shakes her head)

                                                No.

                                                            NATALIA

No quise asustarla. Vengo a limpiar la

casa. ¿Es usted la amiga de la

                                                Senorita Casey?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (nods)

                                                Uh, yes. Sí. Casey's amiga.

                                                            CASEY(OS)

                                                I forgot...

Casey comes in.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (surprised)

                                                Oh. Natalia.

                                                            NATALIA

Lo siento mucho, Señorita Casey. No

sabía que tenía visita. La sorprendí.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Está perfectamente bien, aunque, no

esperaba que usted estuviera aquí. Ya

                                                es muy tarde.

                                                            NATALIA

Sí. Estoy muy apesadumbrada. Mi hijo

está enfermo y no podía encontrar una

                                                niñera para él.

                                                            CASEY

No, no. Entiendo. Usted tuvo que

                                                cuidar de su hijo.

Jamie is still very confused.

                                                            CASEY

Oh, let me introduce you. Jamie, this

is Natalia de Gallegos. She's our

                                                housekeeper. Natalia, this is Jamie.

Jamie shakes her hand.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (smiles)

                                                I'm pleased to meet you.

                                                            NATALIA

                                                (heavily accented)

I'm pleased to meet you, Miss Jamie.

She turns to Casey.

                                                            NATALIA

¿Quiere que me vaya, así usted puede

                                                utilizar la cocina?

                                                            CASEY

No. Será sólo por un momento. No haga

                                                caso de nosotras por favor.

                                                            NATALIA

                                                (smiles)

                                                Sí, señorita.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Muchas gracias, Natalia.

Casey smiles at Jamie and raids the fridge, as Natalia continues to clean the counter.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. CASEY'S STAIRWAY - A MOMENT LATER

They head up the stairs.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                You speak Spanish?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yeah.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                What were you two saying?

                                                            CASEY

Oh, normally she's done before I get

out of school, so I asked her why she

was so late. She said her son was sick

and she couldn't find a babysitter for

him. Oh, and she's sorry for startling

                                                you.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Oh. So she's a maid?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yeah.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. CASEY'S BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

                                                            JAMIE

I don't know. It just seems strange to

have someone else doing something you

                                                could easily do yourself.

Casey flops back down onto the bed.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (shrugs)

I suppose. But it doesn't seem strange

to me. I've grown up this way. At my

                                                grandparent's house it's even worse.

They have a full staff, with cooks,

                                                and waiters, and drivers.

                                                            JAMIE

Let's get on to that family story

                                                then.

                                                            CASEY

Is there anything in particular you

                                                want to know?

                                                            JAMIE

No. Just tell me anything you want.

                                                I'm curious.

Casey opens an iced tea and takes a sip.

                                                            CASEY

Well, my dad is one of three brothers.

                                                He's the youngest. Shannon's dad,

Michael is the oldest. The middle

brother, James, has three kids and

they all live in New York, near my

                                                grandma and grandpa.

                                                            JAMIE

Why is the family split into two

                                                places like that?

                                                            CASEY

I told you how my mom was half-Indian,

                                                right?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Yeah.

Casey places her drink on the nightstand and leans back against her pillows.

                                                            CASEY

She and my dad met as undergrads at

                                                Yale. My grandparents never really

                                                liked her.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Because she was Indian?

                                                            CASEY

That's part of it, but they had more

of a problem with the fact that she

                                                came from 'humble means'.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                You mean she was poor.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yeah.

                                                            JAMIE

It's ok, Casey. You can say it.

                                                            CASEY

I didn't want to.. you know..

                                                            JAMIE

I know, but it's ok. On with the

                                                story.

                                                            CASEY

Well, my dad and my grandparents

fought over her for a while, but when

they graduated from Yale, she wanted

to move back to New Orleans, and he

decided to go with her and go to law

school at Tulane. He told my uncle

Michael about their plans, and he and

my aunt Elizabeth decided to go along

                                                with them.

                                                            JAMIE

Why did they follow them to Louisiana?

                                                            CASEY

I never knew why. I guess they were

really close or something like that.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                When did you come along?

                                                            CASEY

My dad was a third year in law school

when she got pregnant with me. I was

born about 6 months after he

                                                graduated.

Casey grows quiet.

                                                            JAMIE

How exactly did your mom die?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (sighs)

I don't know. I know there was some

sort of complication during my birth,

and that's why she died, but I don't

know exactly what it was. Nobody has

                                                ever told me.

Jamie lays down next to her and rests her head on Casey's shoulder.

                                                            JAMIE

Did you ever wish that you could've

                                                known her?

                                                            CASEY

No. Well, I did a few times when I was

really little, but as I got older I

realized that it wouldn't do any good

to wish for it, because it's not going

to change the fact that I'll never

                                                meet her.

                                                            JAMIE

But didn't you ever think that you'd

get along with her much more than you

                                                do with your dad?

                                                            CASEY

Nah. I figure she couldn't have been

all that nice or anything, if she got

together with a dickhead like my dad,

                                                you know?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Maybe.

They spend a moment in silence.

                                                            JAMIE

Are you out to your family?

Casey blows out a breath.

                                                            CASEY

                                                No.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Not even Shannon?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Not even Shannon.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Why?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Because I'll get cut off.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                What?

                                                            CASEY

I'll get cut off. Written out of the

                                                will. Disinherited.

                                                            JAMIE

Well, you could always work for your

                                                money.

                                                            CASEY

You don't understand. I need that

money. I can't be cut out of that

                                                will.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Why?

Casey sighs.

                                                            CASEY

Because if I don't get it, the New

York cousins will get it. They're...

they fit every stereotype about a rich

kid you could think of. Spoiled,

snobby, don't know the value of a

dollar. If they get that money,

they'll all blow it on cars, houses,

yachts, and Botox. Not to mention

they'll gain control of other assets

that aren't money like real estate and

                                                art collections, and they'll probably

                                                screw those up.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Oh.

                                                            CASEY

And Shannon and I were planning on

pooling our inheritances to start some

                                                sort of charity or foundation.

                                                            JAMIE

How come you and Shannon turned out so

well compared to your other cousins?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (shrugs)

I have no clue. I guess it was easier

for us since our parents were never

around, oddly enough. Uncle James was

always a bit of a snob. They probably

                                                got it from him.

                                                            JAMIE

So you don't really get along with

                                                them?

                                                            CASEY

Nope. You should see us during the

summer, when we're all in one place.

We're always at each others throats.

Well, more like, they're at our

                                                throats, because they're damn jealous.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Because you're so gorgeous?

Casey blushes and clears her throat.

                                                            CASEY

Uh, I don't think so. All they care

about is money, so they're jealous

because Shannon and I each get a full

one-third of the family fortune, since

we're only children. Each of the other

                                                cousins only get one-sixth.

                                                            JAMIE

I see. You know, I don't think we

could have grown up any more different

                                                than we did.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Tell about your family.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (chuckles)

For starters, my whole family gets

along really well. Maybe too well.

We're always in each others' business.

My mom and my dad both had lots of

siblings, so I have dozens of cousins,

but the whole family is in Texas.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (laughs)

Why in the hell are you guys out here

                                                then?

                                                            JAMIE

My mom wanted to be an actress.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Really?

                                                            JAMIE

Yeah. So they moved out here, and she

started doing regional theatre. A lot

                                                of Shakespeare.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Like mother, like daughter.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (smiles)

                                                Yeah.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Do you miss her still?

Jamie play with the edge of Casey's shirt.

                                                            JAMIE

I'll always miss her. It's easier now,

but I will always wish she wasn't out

                                                driving that night.

                                                            CASEY

What happened to the person who hit

                                                her?

                                                            JAMIE

She got out after 2 years. Ended up

doing it again, not too long ago.

                                                            CASEY

                                                That sucks ass.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (quietly)

                                                Yeah.

Casey takes her hand and places a kiss on her knuckles.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Sometimes I didn't think I would get

through it. It was hard enough losing

my mom, but... we got caught in a time

where we didn't have any health

insurance. All of a sudden, we had

thousands of dollars in bills, and dad

started working two jobs, and Clark

started taking odd jobs for neighbors

and I was raising Alice. That's why we

don't have any money. We're still

                                                paying hospital bills off.

                                                            CASEY

She wasn't with the Equity Actors'

                                                Guild or anything?

                                                            JAMIE

No. She was about to join, which would

have supplied her with insurance, but

                                                it was too late.

                                                            CASEY

And you were 11 during all of this?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Yeah.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Wow. I don't think I would've been

strong enough to get through all that

                                                so young.

                                                            JAMIE

I don't know. You did manage to raise

yourself. That was probably just as

hard. Not having anyone to depend on,

                                                someone to guide you.

Casey looks at her.

                                                            CASEY

I'd say we both did pretty well for

                                                ourselves, then.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (smiles)

                                                Yeah.

Jamie leans up and kisses her.

                                                            CASEY

We're not really going to rehearse,

are we? I was only protesting for

                                                show.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (grins)

                                                No. You still tired?

                                                            CASEY

                                                I'm dying.

Jamie laughs and pats her side.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Go ahead and sleep.

Casey closes her eyes.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (sleepily)

                                                Ok. Are you going anywhere?

Jamie starts tracing a pattern on Casey's side, and watches her as she starts to fall asleep.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (whispers)

                                                No. I'm staying right here.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Ok.

Casey wraps her arms around Jamie, and drifts off. After a few moments, Jamie closes her eyes as well and joins her in sleep.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. CASEY'S BEDROOM - LATER

Casey and Jamie are still asleep. Jamie's on her left side, Casey cuddled up behind her, arm wrapped around her waist. Jamie covers Casey's hand in her sleep. The phone rings. Casey jerks awake.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Shit.

Jamie stirs as Casey rolls onto her back to grab the phone.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Hello?

                                                            SHANNON

                                                (on phone)

Hey. Did you just wake up or

                                                something?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (yawns)

                                                Yeah.

                                                            SHANNON

                                                (on phone)

What the hell are you doing asleep?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (eyes still closed)

Shut up. I was tired. I took a nap.

                                                            SHANNON

                                                (on phone)

                                                When did you fall asleep?

                                                            CASEY

About half an hour after I left you a

                                                message.

                                                            SHANNON

                                                (on phone)

That was some nap. You've been

sleeping for some 4 and a half hours

                                                then.

Casey's eyes fly open.

                                                            CASEY

                                                What? What time is it?

She reaches back and turns her clock to face her.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Shit! Shit! Shit!

                                                            SHANNON

                                                (on phone)

I always knew you had Tourette's.

Casey nudges Jamie.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (whispers)

                                                Jamie, wake up.

                                                            SHANNON

                                                (on phone)

                                                What did you say?

                                                            CASEY

Nothing. Can I call you back? I kind

of slept late, I have to do something.

                                                            SHANNON

                                                (on phone)

                                                Sure. Make it quick.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Alright. Bye.

Casey hangs up and drops the phone on the floor.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Jamie.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Mmpfh.

Jamie rolls over to bury her face into Casey's shoulder.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (mumbles)

                                                Busy. Sleeping.

                                                            CASEY

We've been sleeping for over 4 hours.

Jamie sits up bolt upright and Casey quickly leans back.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Holy crap.

                                                            CASEY

Well, that certainly got a reaction

                                                out of you.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Where's the phone?

Casey hands it to her.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Here.

Jamie dials a number.

                                                            JAMIE

Hey, Andrea. Is Clark there with you?

                                                            ANDREA

                                                (on phone)

                                                Oh, yeah. Here.

                                                            CLARK

                                                (on phone)

                                                Jamie?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                I'm here.

                                                            CLARK

                                                (on phone)

                                                What happened? We're late.

                                                            JAMIE

I know. I know. We fell asleep.

Clark is silent for a moment, then he bursts out laughing.

                                                            ANDREA

                                                (faintly)

                                                What's so funny?

Clark is still laughing, though the sound is muffled.

                                                            CLARK

                                                (faintly)

                                                They uh, fell asleep.

Andrea starts laughing as well. A few rustling sounds are heard.

                                                            ANDREA

                                                (on phone)

Jamie Devlin, wake your ass up and put

your clothes back on. We're gonna come

                                                pick you up.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                But we weren't..

                                                            ANDREA

                                                (on phone)

We're in the area so we'll be there

                                                soon.

The line clicks. Jamie puts down the phone, and drops back down onto the bed.

                                                            JAMIE

Oh my God. I am totally mortified.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Why?

                                                            JAMIE

Andrea and my brother think we were

                                                doing 'things'.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (grins)

'Things'? What are you talking about?

Jamie pokes her.

                                                            JAMIE

You know. They thought we were

                                                having..

                                                (glances around)

                                                ..sex.

Casey laughs.

                                                            CASEY

That was priceless. You were all

worried someone might've heard you say

                                                the word.

Casey lays on her side, head propped in her hand.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (blushes)

I'm just... you know, a little.. shy

                                                about that.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Sex?

                                                            JAMIE

Yeah. You know, the whole, um, virgin

                                                thing.

                                                            CASEY

                                                I remember that.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                What do you mean?

                                                            CASEY

I remember being all shy about it when

                                                I was a virgin.

Jamie sits up and looks at her.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                You're not a virgin?

                                                            CASEY

                                                No.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                You're serious.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yeah.

Casey watches Jamie as she processes this info.

                                                            CASEY

That, uh.. doesn't bother you does it?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Casey, you're only 15.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yeah, and?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                But..y-you... how long ago?

Casey sighs and looks away.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Over the summer.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (blurts)

                                                With who?

                                                            CASEY

                                                I can't.. I don't really want to talk

about it. A-at least not yet... I

                                                mean.

They stare at each other for a few moments, then the phone rings. Casey picks it up.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Hello?

                                                (pause)

                                                Alright.

She hangs up.

                                                            CASEY

                                                They're here.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

EXT. CASEY'S HOUSE - A MOMENT LATER

Casey walks with Jamie out to the car, and opens the door for her.

                                                            CASEY

                                                I'll um, see you tomorrow.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (quietly)

                                                Ok.

She gets in and Casey closes the door. Andrea waves at her and she waves back, and watches as they drive off.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Shit.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. CASEY'S BEDROOM - LATER

Casey is laying in bed on the phone.

                                                            CASEY

How did things go so wrong, so fast?

                                                            MIA

                                                (on phone)

                                                What happened?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (sighs)

I spilled the beans about the whole

                                                virginity thing.

                                                            MIA

                                                (hisses)

                                                How'd she take it?

                                                            CASEY

Not well. She freaked out. In a very

                                                silent way, but still.

                                                            MIA

Did you do it tactfully? Or did you

                                                just blurt it out?

                                                            CASEY

It came up during a conversation. I

didn't just spit it out randomly.

                                                            MIA

                                                Was she mad?

                                                            CASEY

No. At least I don't think so. At

first she didn't believe me, then she

reminded me that I'm 15, then she

wanted to know who it was with.

                                                            MIA

                                                Who was it with?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (sighs)

                                                Promise you won't tell anyone?

                                                            MIA

                                                (laughs)

                                                Sure.

                                                            CASEY

I'm serious. She's kinda famous and

                                                still in the closet.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. MIA'S BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

Mia opens her water bottle.

                                                            MIA

                                                I promise.

She takes a drink as she listens to Casey's reply. After a moment's pause, she starts to choke.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. CASEY'S BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

Casey holds the phone away from her ear as Mia coughs into the receiver. She waits a few moments for Mia to collect herself.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Are you alright?

                                                            MIA

                                                (wheezes)

                                                I'm fine.

                                                (clears her throat)

                                                Are you serious?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yes, I'm serious.

                                                            MIA

But.. doesn't she have a boyfriend

                                                now?

                                                            CASEY

                                                She's bisexual.

                                                            MIA

                                                Wow.

                                                (pause)

So why'd you guys split up? Was it

                                                because you moved?

                                                            CASEY

Nah, that didn't have anything to do

with it. She didn't live in New

Orleans, so we were already doing that

                                                long distance thing.

                                                            MIA

                                                So then why?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (sighs)

Well, it was kind of complicated but

it could be boiled down to two points.

One, I'm two years younger than her,

and two, I wasn't rich enough for her.

                                                            MIA

You've got to be kidding. You're one

of the most mature people I know

                                                anyways, and your family practically

built Fifth Avenue along with the rest

of Manhattan. That wasn't good enough

                                                for her?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Apparently not.

                                                            MIA

That's such a crock of shit. I'd give

her a good kick in the shins with my

                                                extra pointy Manolos.

                                                            CASEY

Those are your favorites. You bought

them after you saw them on Sex and the

                                                City.

                                                            MIA

                                                Well, they would've been sacrificed

for a good cause. I could name a

thousand girls that would give their

left arm to be with you.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (laughs)

                                                You're such a liar.

                                                            MIA

                                                I'm serious. There's 2 thousand girls

at our school. Take the half or so

that are more femme than butch, and

                                                there you go.

                                                            CASEY

                                                If you say so.

                                                            MIA

I do. But thankfully you've moved on

                                                to someone much better.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yeah.

                                                (pauses)

Shit. What am I going to do?

                                                            MIA

Give her some time to process things.

                                                            CASEY

God, it's not like I can change the

fact that I'm not a virgin. It's in

                                                the past.

                                                            MIA

And after you give her time, she'll

realize this, and you guys will talk

                                                it out.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Hopefully.

                                                            MIA

If not, which I'm very sure it won't,

I'll take you out somewhere and cheer

                                                you up.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (sighs)

Ok. I have to go. I need to call my

                                                cousin back.

                                                            MIA

Ok. Let me know how everything goes.

                                                            CASEY

                                                I will. Thanks.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

EXT. PLAYHOUSE – LUNCH

Casey sits next to Clark and waits for Jamie, cracking her knuckles. Clark shoots her a look.

                                                            CLARK

                                                Are you alright?

                                                            CASEY

                                                I'm fine.

Jamie rounds the corner and approaches them.

                                                            CLARK

                                                (smiles)

                                                Hey.

                                                            JAMIE

Hey, um, I'm gonna be in the library.

                                                            CLARK

                                                What?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Why?

                                                            JAMIE

I totally forgot to do something for

my project and it's due today. I need

                                                to work on it.

                                                            CLARK

                                                Ok.

                                                            CASEY

Um, do you need any help?

Jamie looks at her.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                No. I've got it.

Clark glances between them.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Ok.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                I'll see you guys later.

Clark opens his lunch while Casey watches Jamie walk away. She hangs her head and rubs the bridge of her nose. Clark takes a bite of his sandwich.

                                                            CLARK

Did something happen with you guys?

                                                            CASEY

                                                What?

                                                            CLARK

She's been kind of quiet ever since

                                                yesterday.

                                                            CASEY

                                                No, it's.. uh...

Clark takes a drink of water and clears his throat.

                                                            CLARK

                                                Listen, Casey... I know that

inevitably things are going to be

weird between us at times, because

you're dating Jamie and at the same

time you're my friend as well. I just

want you know that while, yes, Jamie's

my sister, I'll try not to take sides.

Although if you did something really

detestable and really hurt her, I'll

                                                kick your ass.

                                                            CASEY

If I really hurt her, you wouldn't

                                                have to.

Clark nods.

                                                            CLARK

I just want you to know that you can

                                                talk to me.

                                                            CASEY

Thanks, but um, I'm not really sure if

Jamie would want me to. I don't know

if she doesn't want you to know things

                                                about us.

                                                            CLARK

That's fair. So uh, I assume something

                                                did happen then?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (sighs)

Not really. It's just.. stuff from my

past came up and I'm trying to give

her some time to process things.

                                                            CLARK

                                                Alright.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Thanks, Clark.

He smiles at her.

                                                            CLARK

                                                Anytime.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. TACO SURF - NIGHT

Mia, Chris, Meagan and Leah are at a booth, eating chips and salsa. Meagan and Leah sit next to each other on one side, Mia and Chris on the other.

                                                            MEAGAN

Did you hear Casey and Jamie had a

                                                fight?

Mia looks up from her drink.

                                                            MIA

How do you know about that?

                                                            MEAGAN

                                                Oh, come on. Everybody knows.

                                                            MIA

                                                (sighs)

                                                I hate that sometimes.

                                                            CHRIS

                                                What happened?

Mia takes a sip of her soda.

                                                            MIA

                                                (defensively)

How am I supposed to know?

                                                            LEAH

Don't lie. You're all close with

                                                Casey.

                                                            MIA

Well, she's going to be here any

minute. You can ask her yourself.

Andrew walks in.

                                                            ANDREW

                                                Hey.

He slides in next to Leah and grabs the entire basket of chips from in front of her.

                                                            LEAH

                                                Hey!

                                                            MEAGAN

Get your own basket, you ass!

He takes a chip and tosses it at her.

                                                            ANDREW

                                                Here.

The chip lands in her cleavage and Mia starts laughing.

                                                            LEAH

                                                Nice shot.

                                                            CHRIS

                                                My turn.

Chris opens his mouth widely and Andrew tosses another one. Chris moves to catch it but misses.

                                                            MIA

                                                Aw.

                                                            CHRIS

                                                Again.

Andrew grabs another one and tosses it. Chris catches this one.

                                                            MEAGAN

                                                Whoo!

                                                            ANDREW

                                                Yeah!

                                                            MIA

You're so talented. Because he was

                                                only like, 2 feet away.

Chris reaches out and pinches her, and she giggles wildly.

                                                            CASEY(OS)

I knew all I had to do was follow your

                                                big mouth.

Casey comes up from behind them and settles into the remaining seat next to Mia. Mia scoops some salsa onto a chip.

                                                            MIA

Shut up and eat a chip.

She shoves it into Casey's mouth.

                                                            MIA

                                                Now chew.

Casey does so, then grabs the bowl of salsa from Mia.

                                                            CASEY

                                                That's good. Thanks.

                                                            MIA

                                                Hey! Share!

                                                            CASEY

                                                Should've thought of that, huh?

Mia grabs some chips from Andrew's basket and tosses them all at her.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Hey!

A waiter comes up to them.

                                                            EJ

You kids are always making a mess in

                                                my place.

                                                            MIA

                                                (grins)

Yes, but we're your most loyal

                                                customers, EJ.

                                                            EJ

                                                (teases)

                                                Can it, prom queen.

                                                            MIA

You heard it here first, you guys. I'm

                                                going to be prom queen.

                                                            MEAGAN

Hey, short fry. Leave that business to

                                                us seniors.

                                                            MIA

                                                I can't help it if you're old.

                                                            EJ

                                                (laughs)

                                                The usual?

Nods go around the table.

                                                            EJ

                                                And you?

Casey scans through the menu.

                                                            CASEY

Uh, I'll have the beef taquitos.

                                                            EJ

                                                And to drink?

                                                            CASEY

                                                I'll have a virgin strawberry

                                                margarita.

She hands him her menu.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (under her breath)

                                                Virgin. Ha.

Mia hear this and nudges her shoulder.

                                                            MEAGAN

                                                So tell me something, Casey.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yeah?

                                                            MEAGAN

What are your costume plans for this

                                                weekend?

                                                            CASEY

Actually, I have no idea yet. I still

                                                haven't picked anything out.

                                                            MEAGAN

                                                Oooh, project.

Mia looks at her speculatively for a moment.

                                                            MIA

                                                I have the perfect idea.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Oh yeah?

                                                            MIA

                                                Yeah.

                                                            MEAGAN

                                                What is it?

                                                            MIA

                                                I'm not telling you.

                                                            MEAGAN

                                                Why not?

                                                            MIA

                                                (grins)

Because you're a senior, and seniors

                                                are such bitches.

Meagan gasps, and Andrew, Leah and Chris laugh.

                                                            ANDREW

                                                She told you!

Meagan tries to reach over Leah to hit him.

                                                            LEAH

                                                (protests)

                                                Hey!

                                                            MEAGAN

Damn it, Leah, you're tall and in my

                                                way!

                                                            CASEY

                                                I got it, Meagan.

She starts to kick him under the table but he shouts and brings his legs up protectively.

                                                            MIA

You know, for a football player,

                                                you're such a chicken.

                                                            CASEY

                                                It's a quarterback thing.

They grin at each other as Andrew scoffs.

                                                            CHRIS

So, Casey.. what's going on with you

                                                and Jamie?

                                                            CASEY

What? What do you mean? Did you..

She looks at Mia who shakes her head slightly.

                                                            MIA

                                                No, I didn't.

                                                            LEAH

It's just that you two are normally

attached at the hip, but yesterday I

didn't even see you guys together.

                                                            MEAGAN

And Jamie looked pretty bummed all day

                                                today.

Andrew takes a sip of his soda.

                                                            ANDREW

I saw her moping in the library.

Casey sighs.

                                                            MIA

                                                (groans)

                                                You guys, back off.

                                                            CHRIS

                                                We're just asking.

                                                            MIA

But it's none of your business.

                                                            CHRIS

                                                Whatever.

                                                            MEAGAN

                                                (shrugs)

                                                Alright.

Leah turns to Andrew.

                                                            LEAH

What in the hell were you doing in a

                                                library?

                                                            ANDREW

                                                (defensively)

                                                I was lost.

Everyone else continues to chatter. Casey looks at Mia gratefully.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (quietly)

                                                Thanks.

Mia smiles at her.

                                                            MIA

                                                Anytime.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. CASEY'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

Casey comes in, yawning and pulling off her jacket. She checks her cell phone, then puts it on the nightstand next to her answering machine. She presses button on the machine and it tells her she has no new messages. She picks up the phone and looks at it for a moment, debating on whether or not to call Jamie, the sighs and puts it back down.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. MARINE BIOLOGY – MORNING

Casey comes into the classroom to find all the students standing instead of sitting in their seats. She hurries over to Jamie.

                                                            CASEY

                                                What's going on?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                He's reassigning seats again.

They wait as he calls out names and points out their seats.

                                                            CAMPBELL

                                                Devlin.

Jamie steps forward.

                                                            CAMPBELL

Jamie, you're going to be over here,

towards the back, next to Michael.

She heads over to her seat. Casey crosses her fingers.

                                                            CAMPBELL

                                                Farrell, my little favorite genius.

You're sitting in the middle of the

front row. Right in front of me.

She groans.

                                                            CAMPBELL

It's a sign of my affection.

She unhappily shuffles over to sit down.

                                                            CAMPBELL

                                                Alright, Ford.

Casey glances over to Jamie across the room, who waves slightly. She waves back.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (sighs)

                                                Damn it.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. MARINE BIOLOGY - AN HOUR LATER

The bell rings and Casey packs up to go. Jamie comes up to her.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Can we talk?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yeah, sure.

She starts to shove things in her backpack hastily.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS

They step outside.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Listen, um...

She bites her lip as she tries to figure out what she wants to say. Mr. Campbell walks out of the classroom and heads out of the building. Students walk past them in the hallway, many of them giving Casey and Jamie knowing looks. Two people at their lockers, next to each other, stare at them and try not to look like it.

                                                            JAMIE

Ugh, can we not have any freaking

                                                privacy?!

Casey looks around, bewildered.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Uhh..

Jamie grabs her hand and drags her back into the Marine Bio classroom.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. MARINE BIOLOGY - CONTINUOUS

Jamie looks around, relieved that it's empty.

                                                            JAMIE

Sorry, I just.. it's.. people keep

looking at me like they know what's

                                                going on.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Sorry about that.

                                                            JAMIE

You didn't say anything to anyone, did

                                                you?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (alarmed)

No, of course not. I think people just

figured things out after, you know,

                                                yesterday. We've eaten lunch together

                                                every single day, and then...

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Yeah, yeah.

Casey pulls herself up to sit on a desk.

                                                            CASEY

                                                So, uhhh...

                                                            JAMIE

Look, I know I kind freaked out about

                                                the.. thing we talked about.

                                                            CASEY

                                                No, it's.. it's ok. I mean I

understand how it could weird you out.

                                                            JAMIE

No, I got mad, and I don't really have

a right to be mad. It's in your past,

Casey. I don't care about your past,

as long as I get to be with you now.

Casey looks down at her shoes, then looks up at her, shyly.

                                                            CASEY

                                                You mean that?

                                                            JAMIE

Yeah, I do. You lost your virginity, I

don't care. You were a chronic stuffed

animal thief as a kid, I don't care.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (smiles)

I was never a chronic stuffed animal

                                                thief.

                                                            JAMIE

Well, I was. Do you still like me?

Casey laughs and hops down off the desk.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yeah. Criminal record, be damned.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (grins)

I was a good thief. I never got

                                                caught.

Casey approaches her.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Oh yeah?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Yeah.

                                                            CASEY

                                                That's kind of um..

                                                (wiggles her eyebrows)

                                                hot.

Jamie laughs and Casey kisses her gently.

                                                            JAMIE

Mmm. However, I do think we need to

                                                uh, clarify some things.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Ok.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                I'm a virgin.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (smiles)

                                                I know.

                                                            JAMIE

I plan on staying that way.. for a

                                                while.

Casey takes a deep breath.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Is that okay?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (nods)

                                                Yeah, yeah. I mean.. I don't want

anything you don't want. I'd never

                                                pressure you into something you

                                                weren't ready for.

                                                            JAMIE

Are you sure? I mean, sometimes you

                                                seem like you.. uh...

                                                            CASEY

Ehh, yeah. But I'll deal. Cold

                                                showers, that sort of thing.

                                                (grins)

But if you ever want to throw yourself

                                                at me, I won't complain.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (chuckles)

                                                Don't hold your breath.

Casey leans down and kisses her again. Mr. Campbell walks back in. Jamie gasps and jumps back.

                                                            CAMPBELL

                                                What are you kids doing?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Uh, talking. About..

They glance at each other.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Um..

                                                            CASEY

                                                (blurts)

                                                Mesopelagic fish.

                                                            CAMPBELL

                                                Mesopelagic fish?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (nods)

                                                Yes, mesopelagic fish fascinate me.

                                                            CAMPBELL

Excellent! You can write me a paper

                                                about them.

He walks past them and pats her on the back and heads into his office.

                                                            CAMPBELL

Due in a week. Ok, sparky?

Casey stands there and blinks. Jamie tries not to laugh.

                                                            CASEY

                                                He's not serious.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (grins)

                                                It sure sounded he was.

                                                            CASEY

                                                But.. but...

Jamie laughs and starts to tug her out of the classroom.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Hey.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                What?

                                                            CASEY

Uh, you know there's a Homecoming

                                                dance tonight, right?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Yeah, after the game.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Did you want to go?

Jamie wrinkles her nose.

                                                            JAMIE

I'm not really the dancing type.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Ok.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                You can go though.

                                                            CASEY

Nah, we'll just do something else

after the game. We can ditch Clark and

                                                Andrea.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Ok.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

EXT. QUAD - A MOMENT LATER

Crowds of students wander throughout the quad, stopping from booth to booth. Loudspeakers are set up on the rally stage blasting music. Casey exits the building to find Jamie waiting for her.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Hey.

                                                            JAMIE

Hey, what do you want to do first?

Casey glances around the quad. She spots Mia and the other cheerleaders doing a routine on the stage and smiles before she spots Andrew on the dunk tank booth nearby.

                                                            CASEY

I want to go over there and give that

                                                smug Andrew what he deserves.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (grins)

                                                Ok.

                                                            CASEY

And then I want to eat my way across

                                                this quad.

                                                            JAMIE

There are over 15 food booths here,

                                                Casey.

                                                            CASEY

And I intend to eat at every single

                                                one of them.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (laughs)

                                                You're insane.

                                                            CASEY

                                                I know. Don't tell anyone. It's

supposed to be a secret. C'mon.

She takes Jamie's hand and they head over to the dunk tank, where Andrew sits over the tank, grinning. She pulls out a dollar and slaps it on the counter of the booth.

                                                            CASEY

I want a piece of you, pretty boy.

                                                            ANDREW

You want a piece of me?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (grins)

                                                Yeah, extra crispy, please.

                                                            ANDREW

Hit me with your best shot.

Coach Briggs hands her a football and gestures to the chalk line on the ground.

                                                            BRIGGS

Stay behind the line, and hit the

                                                target.

                                                            ANDREW

Go on, Casey. Give it that ol' college

                                                try.

She looks down at the line on the ground, then looks back up at him and smirks.

                                                            CASEY

                                                How about shotgun?

She starts to back up further from the line.

                                                            ANDREW

Oooooh, why are you trying to

                                                embarrass yourself?

The people behind her part to let her through as she backs up even more. She keeps going until she's a good 15 yards away or so. A crowd starts to gather, and some people on the edges hold out their arms to keep it clear for her.

                                                            ANDREW

Jesus, Farrell, who are you trying to

                                                kid?

She tosses the football up in her hands, then winds up and fires the ball, and it hits the round target sharply, dumping Andrew in the tank. Jamie grins widely and the crowd laughs and claps. Coach Briggs looks at her, then at the little round target.

                                                            BRIGGS

Damn kid, where'd you learn how to

                                                throw like that?

She jogs back up towards them to smirk at Andrew, who's wiping the water out of his eyes.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Aaron Brooks, baby.

Andrew slaps the surface of the water.

                                                            CASEY

Now, if you'll excuse me. I'm hungry.

Andrew starts to splash water out of the tank, trying to get her wet. She grabs Jamie and scurries off.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (grins)

                                                Well, that was impressive.

                                                            CASEY

You should see me in my best sport.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                What's your best sport?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Soccer.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Oh, yeah? I played soccer.

                                                            CASEY

Really? You should try out for the

                                                team.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (laughs)

                                                I meant I played when I was like, 5,

                                                or something.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (shrugs)

Still. I'll help you practice. It

would be fun to be on the team

                                                together.

Jamie tugs her to a halt.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Wait, you're on the team?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yeah.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Since when?

                                                            CASEY

Uh, well I talked with the coach when

I first got here and then I had a try-

out for her a couple days later.

                                                            JAMIE

You're going to do two sports? And the

                                                play?

                                                            CASEY

Rowing is over next week, I don't

start soccer until after that. It's a

different season, so it's not like I'm

going to be doing everything at once.

                                                            JAMIE

Oh. I was just worried that you would

                                                burn yourself out.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (grins)

Nah, I'll be fine. I've done this kind

                                                of schedule for years.

Clark comes up from behind Jamie and tickles her. She giggles and turns around to smack his shoulder.

                                                            CASEY

                                                I'm hungry.

Clark rubs his arm and shoots Jamie a look.

                                                            CLARK

Me too. What are you in the mood for?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Jamie?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                I'm up for anything.

                                                            CASEY

                                                I'm craving Mexican food.

                                                            CLARK

I don't think they have any Mexican

                                                food booths here.

                                                            CASEY

What? No Mexican food? What kind of

                                                carnival is this?

                                                            CLARK

We could always just leave and go eat

                                                off campus.

Jamie shakes her head.

                                                            JAMIE

We need a note for that.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Is that all?

                                                            CLARK

What do you have in mind?

Casey gives them both a grin.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

INT. TACO SURF - AN HOUR LATER

Casey and Jamie sit next to each other on one side of the booth, Clark and Andrea on the other. Andrea eats a chip laden with salsa.

                                                            CLARK

I can't believe Mr. Broadway let us

                                                go. He's always super strict.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (shrugs)

He's nice when he knows who you are.

                                                Thank Mia for that one.

Jamie shoots her a glance, but Casey doesn't notice.

                                                            ANDREA

I can't believe you guys were going to

                                                eat without me.

                                                            CASEY

We weren't going to eat without you.

We were just trying to.. sneak away

                                                without you.

Andrea kicks her under the table.

                                                            CASEY

Ok, ow. Let's not injure me right

                                                before the soccer season starts.

                                                            ANDREA

                                                (grins)

                                                You're on the soccer team.

She rubs her shin.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yes.

                                                            ANDREA

Does that mean you're going to be

                                                running around shirtless during

practices like the rest of the team?

Jamie coughs during the middle of a sip of water.

                                                            CLARK

                                                Take is easy, James.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Shirtless?

                                                            CASEY

                                                No.

Casey gives Andrea a look.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Sorry to disappoint you.

                                                            ANDREA

No worries. You're still shirtless in

                                                my dreams.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Hey!

Andrea grins.

                                                            CLARK

You know, I've never been to this

                                                place before. It's nice.

                                                            CASEY

Well, you can thank Mia for that one

too. I didn't know about this place

either, until we came here last night.

                                                            ANDREA

I like it. It's kinda cozy.

Jamie plays with the straw in her drink.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (lightly)

You went out to dinner with Mia last

                                                night?

                                                            CASEY

Yeah, and with Chris and Meagan and

                                                everyone else.

She brings her arm up to rest along the back of the booth.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Oh.

Clark smiles at Jamie knowingly.

                                                            ANDREA

So are we going to go to the game

                                                together after this?

Casey looks at her cell phone.

                                                            CASEY

It's kinda early. The homecoming show

                                                doesn't start until 6 and it's barely

                                                1. And I want to go home and change.

                                                            ANDREA

What do you need to change for?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (shrugs)

I don't know. I just feel like it.

                                                            ANDREA

                                                If you say so.

CUT TO:

INT. CASEY'S CAR - NIGHT

Casey pulls up to her house and parks.

                                                            JAMIE

You know, I just might have to rethink

                                                my opinion on football games.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Oh, really?

                                                            JAMIE

Yeah. It was surprisingly fun. I mean,

sitting there in that huge crowd, and

                                                all that energy. It's addicting.

                                                            CASEY

I told you you'd like it. Your

                                                football education has begun.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (grins)

I could care less about the actual

game. I just like sitting there with

you, amongst all that school spirit.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Really?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Yeah.

Casey smiles and opens her door.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Let's go.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

EXT. CASEY'S HOUSE – CONTINUOUS

Jamie steps out of the car and inhales deeply.

                                                            JAMIE

I'm totally jealous of you living

here. I love the smell of the ocean.

                                                            CASEY

You know, I've lived in this house

right across the street from the beach

for a month now, and I still haven't

                                                actually gone there.

Jamie stares at her.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Are you kidding me?

                                                            CASEY

                                                No, I'm serious.

Jamie grabs her hand and drags her across the street once the cars are clear.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                You are so fired.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Fired from what?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                I don't know, but it's ridiculous that

you haven't taken the time to walk a

                                                few feet to the beach.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

EXT. BLUFF PARK – CONTINUOUS

They come to the concrete staircase that takes them down from the cliff to the beach. The stair case is long and steep, leading them down 30 feet to the sand. Jamie starts going down the steps, but notices Casey's not following her and she pauses to look back up at her.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                What are you doing?

Casey looks at the handrail with a devilish grin.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Oh no...

Casey hops up onto the rail and slides down.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Casey!

Casey shouts with glee as she quickly slides down, holding out her arms for balance. Jamie hurries down the steps after her.

                                                                                                                        CUT TO:

EXT. BEACH - CONTINUOUS

Casey lands unsteadily on her feet, stumbling slightly.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Whoo!

Jamie reaches the bottom.

                                                            JAMIE

Oh my God! What the hell were you

                                                doing?

                                                            CASEY

                                                (grins)

Having fun. That was so awesome.

She bounces around.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (laughs)

You're going to give me a heart

                                                attack.

                                                            CASEY

Nah. You won't have a heart attack

until you see me going skydiving next

                                                weekend.

Jamie's eyes widen.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (laughs)

                                                I'm kidding.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                You are so crazy.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Thank you. I do try.

Jamie grabs her arm and they start heading towards the water and down the beach.

                                                            CASEY

Do you think Andrea and Clark noticed

we're not there at the dance?

                                                            JAMIE

No. They're probably too busy having

                                                that phone number contest.

                                                            CASEY

I wonder who'll win that one.

                                                            JAMIE

Andrea's at an advantage. She is

bisexual, so she's got more prospects

                                                to collect numbers from.

                                                            CASEY

Nah, I think they agreed that she'd

only restrict herself to girls numbers

                                                to level the playing field.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Mmm.

                                                            CASEY

                                                If I were playing, I so would've

                                                kicked both of their asses.

Jamie gives her a look.

                                                            CASEY

                                                (grins)

Not that I want to go around getting

girls' phone numbers. I'm just saying

I'd get the most if I were playing.

                                                It's my Southern charm.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Oh yeah?

                                                            CASEY

                                                Yeah.

                                                            JAMIE

Well, it certainly did work on me.

She grins up at Casey.

                                                            JAMIE

I can see how it might work for

                                                others.

They walk along in silence for a few moments. Norah Jones' "The Nearness of You" can be heard drifting from above the cliff.

                                                            CASEY

                                                Ooh, it's Norah Jones.

                                                            JAMIE

                                                Where is it coming from?

                                                            CASEY

Probably from one of the restaurants

up there. I love this song. I doubt

they're playing stuff as good as this

                                                at the Homecoming dance.

Jamie takes her hand.

                                                            JAMIE

You're not too disappointed that we

didn't go to the dance, are you?

                                                            CASEY

No. What are you talking about?

She pulls Jamie to a stop.

                                                            CASEY

I've got my Homecoming dance right

                                                here.

She holds up her hand.

                                                            CASEY

May I have this dance, m'lady?

                                                            JAMIE

                                                (smiles)

                                                Certainly, kind sir.

Casey laughs and pulls her close, and they start dancing to the faint music.

                                                            CASEY

I thought you weren't the dancing

                                                type.

                                                            JAMIE

This isn't dancing. This is standing

here in your arms, trying not to float

                                                away.

Casey grins at her and pulls her closer.

                                                            SONG

It's not the pale moon that excites

me, that thrills and delights me. Oh

no, it's just the nearness of you. It

                                                isn't your sweet conversation, that

brings this sensation. Oh no, it's

just the nearness of you. When you're

in my arms and I feel you, so close to

me, all my wildest dreams come true...

Jamie lays her head down on Casey's shoulder and smiles to herself.

                                                                                                                        FADE OUT.
