Season 1
Episode 6: “Green-Eyed Girl”
FADE IN:
INT. CONOR'S CAR - DAWN
Conor and Casey drive to the Country Club.
CONOR
How was your
homecoming game last
night?
CASEY
(yawns)
It was fun.
We won.
He glances over at her.
CONOR
Did you go out afterwards?
CASEY
No, not
really. I hung out with Jamie
for a little
bit, then I dropped her
off and went
straight to bed once I
got back.
CONOR
She doesn't have her own car?
CASEY
No, and even
if she did, she's not old
enough to
drive.
Conor pulls up to the country club valet service.
CONOR
Alright,
we're here. You remember our
deal?
She unbuckles her seatbelt and opens the door.
CASEY
Yeah, yeah.
CUT TO:
EXT. BEL AIR COUNTRY CLUB GOLF COURSE - A MOMENT LATER
Casey and Conor stroll over to the entrance of the golf course,
where Richard and his playing partner, Roger, wait for them with two golf
carts.
RICHARD
Conor!
Casey. It's good to see you.
He shakes their hands.
RICHARD
Casey, this
is Roger. Another fine
lawyer at the firm and
head of the
partners'
committee.
She shakes his hand.
CASEY
I'm very pleased to meet you.
ROGER
Bright and
early, isn't it?
CASEY
(grins)
The best
time to play.
Richard claps his hands together.
RICHARD
Let's get
started shall we? We're
scheduled to start at the 3rd hole.
CONOR
After you.
Conor and Casey load their golf bags onto the extra cart and
hop in.
CUT TO:
EXT. BEL AIR COUNTRY CLUB GOLF COURSE – LATER
Casey, Conor, Richard, and Roger stand on the green as they take turns putting. Casey discreetly yawns as her dad sinks his shot. Her turn comes up in what looks like an easy shot. She swings and the ball drifts to the left of the hole.
CASEY
(loudly)
Ah, shit!
Conor looks mortified. Richard laughs heartily.
RICHARD
That eagle
got away from you.
CASEY
Yeah.
RICHARD
It's your
follow through, you know.
CASEY
My follow through?
RICHARD
Yeah, you
start to twist your hands
slightly at
the end of your swing, and
it rotates
the head. That's why it
goes to the
side.
Conor starts to get ready for his shot.
CASEY
I didn't
notice.
He holds up a hand to stop Conor.
RICHARD
Try it
again.
He tosses her a ball.
CASEY
Alright.
She places the ball on the ground at the same spot and tries
it again. This time it goes in.
ROGER
There you
go.
CASEY
I think it's
my shoulder. I stressed
it at rowing practice.
Conor gets out his pencil to write on the score card.
CONOR
Casey.. four
strokes.
RICHARD
Nah, give
her 3. She's injured.
CASEY
I'll take 4
strokes and I'll still
beat you all.
Richard and Roger laugh.
RICHARD
I don't
think so.
CASEY
Want to bet?
RICHARD
Sure.
CASEY
One hundred
dollars.
CONOR
Casey...
RICHARD
Hush, Conor.
You're on, kid. You can't
beat me.
CASEY
I always win
when the game is on the
line.
She gives her dad a pointed glance.
CASEY
Just like you said, right dad?
Richard puts a hand on her shoulder and guides her back to
the golf carts as they start to move on the next hole.
RICHARD
You know,
you do have an impressive
swing. How's the golf program at Dean?
CASEY
I haven't
checked it out yet, but I
think I'm
going to pay the coach a
visit...
Conor listens as he trails behind them, sullenly.
CUT TO:
INT. CONOR'S CAR – LATER
Conor and Casey are driving home. She's sleeping, resting
her head on a rolled-up sweater against the car door.
CONOR
Casey?
He looks over at her.
CONOR
Case?
She doesn't wake up. At a red light, he turns to study her.
She exhales and shifts in her sleep. The light turns green and he sighs before
turning his attention back to the road.
CUT
TO:
INT. CONOR'S CAR – LATER
Conor pulls up to the school and he reaches over shake her
shoulder.
CONOR
Casey, we're
here.
She blinks slowly and yawns.
CONOR
You up?
CASEY
Yeah.
CONOR
Call me when
you're done. I'll come
pick you up.
CASEY
(mumbles)
Ok.
She opens the door and steps out.
CUT TO:
INT. PLAYHOUSE – LATER
People gather their scripts and things to get ready to leave.
PERRY
Alright,
everyone. We're going to pick
it up right
where we left off on
Wednesday.
We've got a lot more to
work on, the
canceled rehearsal last
time really threw us off.
CUT TO:
EXT. PLAYHOUSE - AFTERNOON
The cast empties out of the Playhouse. Jamie grabs onto Casey's
arm.
JAMIE
Hey, you ok?
CASEY
(rubs her
eyes)
Yeah, I'm
fine. I'm just really,
really tired.
Jamie brushes a lock of hair away from Casey's face.
JAMIE
What time
did you wake up this
morning?
CASEY
I think 3:30
or 4. And then after golf
I came
straight here.
JAMIE
Go home and sleep.
CASEY
Nah, I only
have a couple hours before
I have to
get ready for the party. If
I fall
asleep now, I won't wake up
until
tomorrow.
JAMIE
Maybe you
need to. You've been running
yourself ragged all week.
CASEY
No, I
haven't.
Jamie starts to tick off her fingers.
JAMIE
You stayed
up late for that paper. You
stayed up
late on the phone with
Shannon on
Wednesday. You stayed up
late to go
out on Thursday. You stayed
up late last night.
CASEY
Hey, I got
an 'A' on that paper.
JAMIE
(exasperatedly)
Casey...
CASEY
(petulantly)
But I
promised everyone I'd be there.
Casey pouts and Jamie can't help but smile.
JAMIE
Ok. Just
don't.. overdo it, ok?
CASEY
Alright. I
wish you were gonna be
there with
me tonight, though.
JAMIE
I'll see you
tomorrow. You can last
until then, right?
Casey pouts again.
CASEY
No.
JAMIE
(laughs)
Yes, you
can.
CASEY
Well, maybe,
but I'll be counting the
hours.
JAMIE
Ok.
Clark comes up to them.
CLARK
You ready
James?
Casey's cell phone rings. She pulls it out and glances at
the caller ID.
CASEY
That's my
dad, I gotta go.
JAMIE
Ok. Have
fun.
CASEY
I will.
She kisses Jamie goodbye.
CASEY
I'll see
you. Later, Clark.
CLARK
Later.
She heads out the gate. Clark wiggles his eyebrows at Jamie.
CLARK
Oooh.
Jamie blushes and shoves his shoulder.
JAMIE
Shut up.
CUT TO:
INT. CASEY'S CAR – NIGHT
Casey pulls up nearby Mia's house and parks. She glances at
herself in her rear-view mirror before getting out.
CUT
TO:
INT. MIA'S HOUSE – NIGHT
Loud music blasts in the living room, where a large group of
people in various costumes dance in the middle of the room. Casey enters the
crowded house, wearing jeans, boots, a Western stitched shirt with a white tank
underneath, and a black Stetson hat. Mia swoops down upon her immediately,
wearing her Wonder Woman costume and holding a colorful drink.
MIA
Check you
out.
CASEY
Me? Check
you out, Wonder Woman.
Mia flicks her hair over her shoulder.
MIA
I still
think a cowgirl is sexier than
Wonder
Woman. Especially with that
Southern
drawl of yours.
Casey steps closer.
CASEY
(sultry)
Oh, so you
like this Southern drawl of
mine, do you, darlin'?
Mia closes her eyes and puts a hand over her heart.
MIA
For the love
of Christ, Casey. Don't
do that.
CASEY
But you just
said you liked it.
MIA
(grins)
I like it
too much. Take it down a
notch.
Casey touches the brim of her hat.
CASEY
(grins)
Yes, ma'am.
What is that?
She points to Mia's drink.
MIA
I don't
know. Tropical something.
Caleb made it.
She hands it to Casey who takes a sip.
CASEY
That's good.
Casey hands it back.
MIA
Meagan's
looking for you.
CASEY
Crap. She's
going to challenge me to
that drinking game, isn't she?
MIA
Told you not
to tease her at dinner
the other
day.
CASEY
You gotta
help me. Convince her to
table it
until another time.
MIA
(grins)
Why? You can't do it?
CASEY
I'm
handicapped. I'm so tired I'm
about to
pass out right now, stone
cold sober.
Well, not stone cold. That
stuff you're
drinking is loaded.
MIA
Hmm. I'll
help, but you gotta do
something for me.
CASEY
Like what?
MIA
I don't know
yet, but I'll come up
with
something eventually.
CASEY
(grins)
Deal.
They shake on it.
MEAGAN
Hey, Casey!
Meagan comes up to them.
MEAGAN
(grins)
Cowboy, take
me away. Damn.
She adjusts Casey's collar who smiles bashfully.
MEAGAN
That was the
perfect idea, Mia. Nice
work.
MIA
She looks
hot, doesn't she?
MEAGAN
Totally.
Casey clears her throat.
CASEY
Uh, can we
not talk about me like I'm
not standing
right here?
MIA
Oh, shush,
you. Don't think I don't
see you
blushing.
CASEY
(defensively)
It's hot in here.
Mia pinches her cheek.
MIA
If you say
so.
MEAGAN
C'mon and
dance, you guys.
Mia and Casey look at each other and laugh as Meagan drags them both into the crowd.
CUT
TO:
INT. MIA'S HOUSE - AN HOUR LATER
Casey negotiates her way through the people scattered throughout
the house. Caleb intercepts her.
CALEB
Hey, Casey.
CASEY
Hey, how's it going?
CALEB
I like your
costume. If only you were
a guy.
CASEY
You're not
so bad yourself, Cal.
She gestures to his long, lack trenchcoat and dark sunglasses.
CASEY
You would've
made a better Neo in that
damn movie.
CALEB
No way.
Keanu Reeves was hot in that
movie. Tall,
dark and handsome is my
type.
CASEY
Oh, yeah? I might know a guy.
CALEB
I'm kinda
taking it easy for now.
CASEY
(shrugs)
Fair enough.
They head into the kitchen.
CUT TO:
INT. MIA'S KITCHEN – CONTINUOUS
CALEB
You want me
to make you a drink?
CASEY
Nah. I'm
going without tonight.
He grabs a bottle of Seagram's 7 and a bottle of Seven-up.
CALEB
So the big
tournament is coming up.
You nervous?
She hops up onto the counter.
CASEY
I don't get
nervous.
CALEB
What do you predict?
CASEY
I think
Harbor might give us some
trouble this
time. They're pissed off
about our
last match. It'll be tough,
but I think
we'll come out ahead.
He mixes his drink.
CALEB
It's been a
while since both the men's
and women's
teams held the title. You
gonna be the
one to bring it back to
us?
CASEY
Definitely.
CALEB
(grins)
Alright.
We'll have to have a big
blowout
party to celebrate. No more
work-outs
and practices.
He closes the bottles and takes a small sip.
CALEB
Ah, perfect.
CASEY
For you
guys. I, however, am jumping
right into
soccer the week after the
tournament.
CALEB
Really? You play any other sports?
CASEY
You name it,
I probably do it.
CALEB
Maybe you
should try out for football.
I heard
about your little display at
the Homecoming fair yesterday.
CASEY
(shrugs)
That's what
happens when your dad
works for a
football team for most of
your life.
She hops back down and grabs a bottle of water from the refrigerator.
Mia comes in a few moments later.
MIA
What are you doing out here?
Casey backs up and shakes a finger at her.
CASEY
That's it.
I'm done. No more dancing.
My legs are
going to fall off and my
house isn't
wheelchair accessible.
Caleb chuckles.
MIA
Aw, poor baby. Did I wear you out?
CASEY
You make one
more crack about my
stamina, I'm
going to hurt you.
MIA
Be careful,
I might like it.
CASEY
Wench.
MIA
Scamp.
CALEB
I'm bailing
before things get rough.
Later, you
guys.
He and his drink escape to the family room and Casey opens
the bottle of water. Mia promptly snatches it out of her hand and takes a long
drink.
CASEY
Hey!
MIA
Thanks. I needed
that.
Casey snatches it back.
CASEY
Are you
drunk?
She takes a gulp of the water.
MIA
(defensively)
No.
Casey raises an eyebrow. Mia giggles.
MIA
I'm totally
kidding. Yeah, I'm
smashed.
Mia studies her as she drinks her water.
MIA
(blurts)
You look
like crap, Casey.
Casey places a hand over her heart.
CASEY
(smiles)
You say the
most romantic things.
MIA
Don't get me
wrong. You're hot all the
time.
Especially now. That cowgirl
thing you've
got going on really does
it for me.
She tugs on Casey's collar and grins at her drunkenly.
MIA
But you look
like you haven't slept in
weeks. It's
sexy-ugly.
CASEY
What the
hell is sexy-ugly?
MIA
Haven't you
ever seen Kissing Jessica
Stein?
CASEY
No.
MIA
God, where's
your lesbian card? I'm
taking it
away.
She starts feeling around in Casey's pockets. Casey playfully
slaps her hands away.
CASEY
Whoa, there
buckaroo. I left it at
home.
She rubs her eyes and takes another gulp of her water.
MIA
Casey, go
upstairs and get into my
bed.
Casey coughs.
CASEY
Wh..?
MIA
And sleep,
you smart ass. I didn't
mean to get
naked and wait for me.
Well, on
second thought...
CASEY
(laughs)
I don't
think so.
MIA
But
seriously. Go sleep. Wonder
Woman's orders.
CASEY
(sighs)
Alright.
Wake me up when things start
to wind
down?
Casey starts to turn around.
MIA
Sure. Now
scoot.
She gives Casey a pat on the butt to get her moving.
CASEY
I'm going,
I'm going.
CUT TO:
INT. JAMIE'S HOUSE - A MOMENT LATER
Clark and Jamie are lazing about in the living room, watching a movie; Clark sitting up, Jamie laying on the couch with her legs in his lap.
CLARK
What is this?
JAMIE
It's Kissing
Jessica Stein.
They watch for a moment.
CLARK
So what did
you and Casey do last
night after the game?
JAMIE
(smiles)
We took a
walk on the beach and
danced. In
the moonlight.
He looks over at her and grins.
CLARK
Seriously?
JAMIE
(nods)
Yeah.
CLARK
That is so
romantic. If Casey were a
guy, I would
so try to steal her from
you.
Jamie sighs blissfully.
JAMIE
Lucky for
me, she's not.
(grins)
Hands off.
He chuckles.
CLARK
Jamie?
JAMIE
Yeah?
CLARK
I'm really
happy for you, you know
that?
JAMIE
Yeah...
thanks. Now we need to get you
a boyfriend
so you're just as happy,
because you
deserve it.
CLARK
(chuckles)
Like you
could help.
Jamie kicks him with her foot.
CLARK
Ow.
JAMIE
Well, maybe
I can't, but maybe Casey
can.
CLARK
How?
JAMIE
She could
probably introduce you to
some of her
other guy friends that she
hangs out
with.
CLARK
You mean the
Abercrombie crew?
JAMIE
Sure.
They're all pretty good-looking,
right?
CLARK
(scoffs)
And snobby.
JAMIE
Oh come on,
Clark. How snobby can they
be if Casey
can not only tolerate
them, but
like them?
CLARK
You do have a point there.
JAMIE
So?
CLARK
I'll think
about it.
JAMIE
(grins)
Ok.
She turns her attention back to the movie, then glances around the room.
JAMIE
(alarmed)
Where's
Alice?
CLARK
I don't
know. She could be reading our
journals
again.
They look at each other for a moment, then bolt off the couch.
CUT TO:
INT. MIA'S BEDROOM - LATE NIGHT
Casey's asleep, laying sprawled on her stomach in Mia's bed. Mia comes in quietly and sits on the edge of the bed. She watches Casey sleep for a few moments, noting her deep, even breaths, and chuckles quietly to herself when Casey twitches her nose from the hair that's fallen into her face. She reaches out and gently brushes it back. Casey's nose twitches again and she stirs. She sleepily rubs her eyes, and opens them.
CASEY
(hoarsely)
Mia?
MIA
(whispers)
Yeah?
CASEY
Mmm. Is the
party over?
MIA
Yeah. Everyone's gone.
CASEY
(sleepily)
You shoulda
woken me up earlier.
MIA
Why?
CASEY
(mumbles)
So I can go home.
MIA
No way,
cowgirl. I'm not letting you
drive home
in the condition that
you're in.
CASEY
I'm tired,
Mia. Not drunk. You're the
one that's
drunk.
MIA
Both can
equally impair you when
driving, and
I've sobered up a bit
since you came up here.
CASEY
Bu.. but I
have to...
She trails off and her eyes start to drift closed again.
MIA
Yeah,
exactly.
Mia hesitates a moment, then leans over to place a soft kiss on Casey's temple.
MIA
(whispers)
Just get
some rest. You can go home in
the morning.
Casey's already asleep. Mia smiles and climbs into the other
side and joins her. She rolls onto her side, facing away from Casey. Casey
stirs slightly, then rolls over and wraps an arm around Mia's waist, still asleep.
Mia stiffens slightly, then sighs and relaxes, drifting off into sleep as well.
CUT
TO:
INT. MIA'S BEDROOM - EARLY MORNING
Casey shifts in her sleep and fuzzily opens her eyes. She
and Mia are laying on their sides, facing each other, with Casey's arm wrapped
around Mia securely. She sleepily smiles and starts to fall asleep again, then
her eyes pop back open widely and she fully registers the position they're
laying in.
CASEY
(whispers)
Oh, shit.
She freezes for a few moments, trying not to wake Mia, then carefully untangles herself from Mia's embrace and slips out of bed. She sits on the edge of the bed for a moment, then runs a hand through her hair and grabs her boots from under the bed.
CUT
TO:
INT. MIA'S BEDROOM - LATER
Mia stirs and wakes up. She rolls over and notices Casey's gone. She sits up slightly, and notices a bottle of water, two pills, and a note on her nightstand. She reads the note.
"Hey. Sorry to disappear on you, but I had some things to
take care of. If you hadn't rather forceably pinched some sense into me last
night, I could've really hurt myself. Thanks for watching out for me, and I
promise that I'll always be there to watch out for you. - Casey P.S. I left you
some water and aspirin in case you didn't sober up as much as you thought"
Mia carefully re-folds the note and places it back on the
nightstand, then wraps herself around Casey's pillow, inhaling deeply.
CUT TO:
INT. CASEY'S KITCHEN - AN HOUR LATER
Casey walks back inside the house, wearing workout shorts
and a tank, sweating profusely, and opens up the refrigerator. Conor comes in.
CONOR
Hey. Were you working out?
CASEY
Yeah. I did
an hour or so of the
rowing
simulator.
He nods and grins.
CONOR
Listen
Casey, I have good news.
She rummages through the drinks in the fridge.
CASEY
(lightly)
Oh, yeah?
CONOR
I just got
off the phone with Roger. I
made
partner!
She pulls a bottle of water and twists it open.
CASEY
(absently)
That's nice.
Her cell phone on the counter rings. She picks it up and
checks the caller ID. She breaks out into a wide grin and answers it.
CASEY
Hey you.
JAMIE
(on phone)
Hey. What
are you up to?
CONOR
Casey, I'm
trying to talk to you.
She sighs and rolls her eyes.
CASEY
Not much,
but can I call you back in
about ten minutes?
JAMIE
(on phone)
Sure. Talk
to you then.
CASEY
Bye.
She hangs up.
CASEY
(smiles)
Yes, ok, you
made partner. I'm happy
for you.
CONOR
Well, I want
you to know that I
probably owe
it to you. Richard loves
you and
wishes he could adopt you.
CASEY
That's
ridiculous. You made partner
because you
work hard and you're good
at what you do.
He gives her a surprised smile.
CONOR
Thanks, but
still, you've helped me
out a lot
these past couple of weeks.
I appreciate
it.
CASEY
Anytime.
CONOR
If there's
uh, anything you want...
She starts to shake her head, but then stops and thinks for
a moment.
CASEY
Actually,
yeah. I was wondering if I
could have a
party here this weekend.
CONOR
A party?
CASEY
Yeah. Not a
huge, blowout thing. A
medium-sized
kind of.. kickback.
CONOR
Well, there
is that banquet on
Saturday.
CASEY
What banquet?
CONOR
I told you
about it at the last one.
Casey chews her lip.
CASEY
Crap. I
forgot about that.
He shakes his head.
CONOR
No, you know
what? Go ahead and throw
a party.
I'll go to the banquet by
myself and
just stay the night at a
place in
L.A.
CASEY
Are you sure?
CONOR
Yeah, I'll
probably be too tired to
come all the
way back here anyways.
CASEY
(nods)
Cool.
She grins and starts to head out of the kitchen.
CONOR
Do you have
plans for tonight?
CASEY
(slowly)
Yes.
CONOR
Is it
possible that you can postpone
them? I'd
really like to take you out
to dinner and celebrate.
CASEY
I was going
to go trick-or-treating. I
can't really
postpone that.
CONOR
(laughs)
Casey,
you're too old to be going
trick-or-treating
now.
She sighs.
CONOR
Please? It
would really mean a lot to
me.
CASEY
Fine.
She heads out of the kitchen.
CUT TO:
INT. CASEY'S BEDROOM - A MOMENT LATER
Casey enters her bedroom and closes the door.
CASEY
(to herself)
Shit. Why am
I so nice to him
sometimes?
She picks up the phone and dials Jamie's number.
JAMIE
(on phone)
Hello?
CASEY
Hey.
JAMIE
(on phone)
That was
quick.
CASEY
(rubs the
bridge of her nose)
Yeah,
listen.. I can't make it
tonight.
JAMIE
(quietly)
Oh. How come?
CASEY
It's my dad.
He got promoted at work.
He wants to
go out tonight to
celebrate.
JAMIE
Ok. That's
cool.
CASEY
Are you
sure? Because I can always
tell him to piss off.
JAMIE
Don't be
ridiculous. You should spend
some time
with him.
CASEY
I'm sorry.
I'll make it up to you.
JAMIE
It's not
your fault, Casey.
CASEY
But still, I
wanted to see you
tonight.
JAMIE
You just saw
me yesterday.
CASEY
Well, I want
to see you all the time.
A pause.
JAMIE
I know what
you mean.
Casey chuckles.
JAMIE
We'll do
something this weekend, then.
CASEY
As a matter
of fact, I'm going to
throw a
party here on Saturday. My
dad's going
to be in L.A. and he said
I could.
JAMIE
Oh yeah?
CASEY
Yeah.
JAMIE
Ok, I'll ask
my dad.
CASEY
Ok. And tell
him Clark is going to be
there.
JAMIE
Is he?
CASEY
Unless he
doesn't want to go, but he's
invited, of
course.
JAMIE
Alright. I
have to go, we're gonna be
late for
church.
CASEY
Alright.
I'll see you at school
tomorrow.
JAMIE
Bye.
CUT TO:
INT. CASEY'S BEDROOM - LATE MORNING
Casey rolls over in bed and gets a stream of sunlight directly
in her eyes.
CASEY
Ow.
She lifts her head up to look at her clock which reads 10:30.
CASEY
Oh my God.
She throws off the covers and hurries into the bathroom.
CUT
TO:
INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY – LUNCH
Casey exits the attendance office and heads down the hallway.
She rounds a corner and bumps into Mia.
MIA
Ow, Farrell.
In a hurry?
Casey surveys her.
CASEY
I'm sorry. Are you okay?
MIA
(grins)
I suppose I
deserved it. I'm just glad
you didn't
slam me into a locker.
CASEY
(laughs)
Yeah.
(pauses)
Did you get
my note?
MIA
Yeah, I did.
Casey nods and gives her a small smile.
MIA
Do you
always snuggle up like that at
night?
Casey chuckles and rubs the back of her neck bashfully.
CASEY
Eehh, yeah.
It's a habit. I'm always
wrapping
myself around things in my
sleep. I'm sorry.
MIA
(shakes her
head)
Don't
apologize. Best sleep I had in
years.
CASEY
Me too.
They pause and smile at each other. Casey clears her throat.
CASEY
Listen, I'm
having a party at my house
Saturday
night. I'd really like it if
my best
friend and girlfriend can meet
and hang
out.
MIA
Who's your
best friend?
CASEY
(grins)
You, dorkface.
MIA
(smiles)
Really?
CASEY
Yeah. So
what do you say?
MIA
I say, I'll
be there.
CASEY
(nods)
Great! I uh,
gotta go find Jamie. I'll
see you later then.
MIA
Ok.
Mia watches her go with a smile on her face.
CUT TO:
EXT. PLAYHOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Casey rounds the corner of the Playhouse.
CLARK
There you are. Where have you been?
She shrugs off her backpack and sits down next to Jamie.
CASEY
I think I
slapped the wrong button on
my alarm
clock this morning. I was
pretty out of it.
JAMIE
Makes sense.
You'll probably be out of
it for the
next few days as you catch
up.
CASEY
I'll just
have to up my caffeine
intake.
JAMIE
Or you could
start going to bed
earlier.
CASEY
What a silly
suggestion. I shall
continue to
go to bed at 11:30 and not
a minute
earlier.
She crosses her arms stubbornly.
JAMIE
You're going
to start falling asleep
in class.
CASEY
No, I won't.
JAMIE
(smiles)
Ok, but
don't say I didn't warn you
when you
leave drool on desks all over
campus.
CASEY
I do not
drool in my sleep. However, I
may cuddle a
backpack. And if it's
Marine Bio,
I may cuddle you.
JAMIE
We don't sit
next to each other
anymore,
remember?
CASEY
Then don't get mad if I cuddle Joanne.
JAMIE
I think
she'd have a heart attack.
CASEY
(indignantly)
Am I that scary?
JAMIE
(laughs)
No, but the
poor girl is so painfully
shy. Could
you imagine her reaction
when one of
the most popular girls in
school wraps
her arms around her in
her sleep?
CASEY
You know,
you were that shy when I
first met
you.
JAMIE
Yeah, but
you're a good influence.
CASEY
(wiggles her
eyebrows)
I try to be
a bad one whenever
possible.
Jamie laughs and kisses her.
JAMIE
You are a
bad influence. I lied to my
dad about
Saturday. I told him we were
going out to a movie.
CLARK
It was the
right choice, however. If
you had told
him that you were going
to a party
at your girlfriend's
unsupervised
house, he probably
would've gone ballistic.
CASEY
Are you
coming on Saturday, Clark?
CLARK
I'll come if
you guys agree to stop
being so
cute. It's getting gross.
JAMIE
(tsks)
You're just
jealous.
CLARK
I am not.
CASEY
We need to
find you a boyfriend.
JAMIE
That's what
I told him!
CASEY
On Saturday
you'll have no choice but
to be
introduced to lots of eligible
bachelors.
CLARK
(grins)
Bring it on.
Should I prepare
interview
questions like on that
dating show?
CASEY
(laughs)
No, smart
ass. Just bring yourself.
And a different hair-style.
He runs a hand through his baseball cap flattened hair.
CLARK
What's wrong
with my hair?
Jamie and Casey look at each other for a moment, then laugh.
CASEY
Will you...
JAMIE
(interrupts)
Yeah, I'll
take care of him.
She glances down at Casey's backpack and spots another gym
bag.
JAMIE
What's that?
CASEY
Oh, I have
my first soccer practice
today.
CLARK
Oh, yeah.
Andrea is planning on
watching you
guys afterschool.
CASEY
Are you
coming to watch too?
JAMIE
Sure. We can
probably stay for a
little while. Right, Clark?
CLARK
Yeah. Maybe
15 minutes or so.
CASEY
(grins)
Alright.
CUT TO:
EXT. DEAN SOCCER FIELD – AFTERNOON
Casey is on the field, doing drills with the team. Jamie, Clark and Andrea sit next to each other on the bleachers. Some students along with some parents are scattered in the bleachers as well, and a large contingent of cheerleaders sit together,
including Mia and Meagan. The coach talks to the players for
a moment, and half of the team, including Casey, strips
off their practice shirts, leaving them in sports bras and shorts. Jamie's eyes widen slightly, then she looks Casey up and down.
ANDREA
(grins)
Oooh,
scrimmage time.
Some of the cheerleaders hoot and catcall and call Casey's name and Casey smirks at them before getting into position for the practice game. Clark glances over at the group of cheerleaders.
CLARK
You do
realize the entire varsity
cheerleading
squad is here, ogling
Casey,
right?
JAMIE
As if I
didn't figure that out the
moment they
all collectively swooned
when she took off her shirt.
CLARK
Oooh,
sarcasm. I like it. Casey is a
bad
influence, isn't she?
She grins at him.
ANDREA
I don't know
how you do it. If I were
you, I
would've stomped over there in
a jealous
rage and said, 'back off,
bitches!'
CLARK
But you'd
break a nail.
ANDREA
It would
have been worth it. I
would've
been defending my territory.
CLARK
Aren't we possessive?
ANDREA
In fact, I
feel like stomping over
there
nonetheless. I feel all
protective
over you two and your
relationship.
It's bizarre.
CLARK
It's because
they're so cute together
and all that crap, isn't it?
ANDREA
Exactly! I
don't want anyone to try to
come in and
screw things up.
JAMIE
(smiles)
Thanks you
guys, but I think Casey and
I can handle
things on our own.
ANDREA
Still, it
doesn't hurt to have a
little muscle to back you guys up.
They all watch Casey run down the field.
CLARK
I think
Casey's got enough muscle for
the both of
them.
ANDREA
Damn, Jamie.
You realize you're dating
the hottest
girl in school, right?
Jamie sighs.
JAMIE
Yeah.
Clark glances at his watch.
CLARK
I think we
should get going, Jamie.
Dad's going
to be here soon.
JAMIE
Ok.
Casey waits in her position on the field as two girls on her
team pass the ball between each other, dodging defenders. She spots Jamie and
Clark heading down the bleachers and gives them a small wave, before the ball gets
passed her way and she charges up the field. Chris arrives and sits down next
to Mia, who's at the edge of the group.
CHRIS
Hey.
MIA
Hey you.
What took you so long?
CHRIS
(shrugs)
Ms. Lawndale
held me after class. Gave
me a lecture.
MIA
One of many.
Was it that bad?
CHRIS
I don't
know. Like I paid attention.
He spots Casey on the field.
CHRIS
So how was
the party?
MIA
It was
great, and I can't believe you
got stuck doing family crap.
CHRIS
I know. I
tried to escape towards the
end of the
night, but it didn't work
out. Casey
came?
MIA
Yeah.
CHRIS
With Jamie?
MIA
No.
(sighs)
Chris, I don't know what to do.
He studies her for a moment.
CHRIS
You've fallen for her, haven't you?
Like
seriously, no bullshit, more than
the hots for
her fallen.
MIA
Yeah. She
ended up staying the night.
CHRIS
(grins)
And...
MIA
And nothing
happened, really. Other
than some
ridiculously sweet cuddling.
CHRIS
So maybe
she's not so taken with Jamie
after all.
MIA
No. She uh..
(chuckles)
She was
asleep through it all. So it's
not like she
really intended to do
anything.
CHRIS
Oh.
MIA
But.. I
don't know how to describe it.
But it felt
really good. And it kills
me that
she's with Jamie.
He rubs her shoulder.
CHRIS
Yeah. I'm
sorry, pal.
MIA
Unless..
She trails off as she watches Casey practice.
CHRIS
Unless what?
She turns to him.
MIA
Unless I
gave her something Jamie
couldn't.
CHRIS
Do you mean..
MIA
Yeah, I do.
A pause.
CHRIS
You know,
that could work.
MIA
Yeah.
She thinks about it for a moment. Then she gasps and puts a
hand over her eyes.
MIA
(horrified)
Oh my God I
did not just think that.
Chris! I did
not just consider
sleeping
with Casey in order to lure
her away from Jamie!
CHRIS
Well, why
not?
MIA
Because! Oh
God.
She shakes her head.
MIA
Because one,
that is just the lowest
thing on earth. Two, because Casey
would never
accept that offer. Three,
even if she
did go for it, she
wouldn't be
as honorable as I thought,
and despite my protests, I think it's
one of the
best things about her. It's
sort of a
catch-22.
(sighs)
I totally
cannot believe I seriously
considered
it. Chris, I don't deserve
someone like Casey.
He wraps an arm around her.
CHRIS
Hey. Don't
be so hard on yourself.
Yes, it may
have been a sleazy
thought, but
you're just frustrated.
MIA
I'm at my
freaking wits' end, that's
what.
CHRIS
Look, this
is what I think you should
do. I think
you should just relax. You
and Casey
are like a fairytale Disney
romance;
it's meant to be. There are
too many differences between them, and
I think
their relationship will just
collapse on
its own without any
interference
from you.
MIA
And if it doesn't?
CHRIS
And if it
doesn't, you still have
options that
you need to keep open.
There's
Leah.
MIA
(sighs)
Yeah.
CHRIS
Do something with her this weekend.
MIA
Casey's
having a party on Saturday.
CHRIS
Even better.
Ask Leah to the party.
That way
you'll keep that opportunity
open while
at the same time, showing
Casey that
you've moved on and you're
not all that hung up on her. Might
stir up some
jealousy.
MIA
I suppose.
CHRIS
Sound like a
plan?
MIA
(half-heartedly)
Yeah, it's a plan. Are you going?
CHRIS
I might.
We'll see.
CUT TO:
INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - MORNING
The bell rings as Mia and Chris head down the hall.
CHRIS
So we were
going to try that new place
on Pine.
MIA
I'm up for
it.
Out of the corner of her eye, she spots Leah talking to a
couple of friends. Chris turns to see who she's looking at, then grins at her.
CHRIS
Go on.
She adjusts the strap of her messenger bag on her shoulder,
then heads over to Leah.
MIA
Hey.
LEAH
(smiles)
Hey.
MATT
What's up Mia?
MIA
Nothing new.
Can I uh, talk to you,
Leah?
LEAH
(nods)
Sure. I'll
see you guys later.
MATT
Later.
He and his friend leave.
LEAH
It's good to
see you, you know. I feel
like we
don't hang out as much
since...
MIA
Yeah, I
know. I guess we've both been
kind of
busy.. since then.
LEAH
Yeah.
MIA
(clears her
throat)
Listen, did
you hear about Casey's
party?
LEAH
(nods)
Yeah, she
told me about it. I'm going.
MIA
Yeah?
LEAH
Yeah. Will I see you there?
MIA
(smiles)
Definitely.
LEAH
Well, I look
forward to it.
The hallway starts to empty as more students head into their
classes.
LEAH
(smiles)
We should get going.
MIA
Yeah. I'll
see you on Saturday.
LEAH
Ok.
She gives Mia another smile, then heads into a classroom
nearby. Chris comes up to Mia.
CHRIS
So?
MIA
She'll be
there.
CHRIS
Excellent.
Trust me, Mia. This is
going to
work.
MIA
(skeptically)
Mm-hmm.
CUT TO:
INT. JAMIE'S LIVING ROOM – NIGHT
Jamie grabs her jacket from the back of the couch and slips
it on. Clark picks up Alice and swings her around in a circle.
CLARK
You ready?
JAMIE
Yeah.
TYLER
What movie are you guys going to see?
JAMIE
Uhh..
CLARK
(smoothly)
We haven't
decided yet. We're just
gonna see
what's playing when we get
there.
TYLER
Alright.
Well, have fun.
Clark dumps Alice on the couch and she giggles.
ALICE
Bring me
popcorn.
CLARK
Ok. Bye dad.
He starts to head for the door. Jamie kisses Tyler on the cheek.
JAMIE
Bye dad.
TYLER
Bye,
sweetheart.
CUT
TO:
EXT. JAMIE'S HOUSE – CONTINUOUS
Clark and Jamie walk down the drive way towards Andrea's
car, where she sits and waits.
JAMIE
I don't know
what I'd do without you.
I couldn't
even think when he asked
what movie we were going to see.
CLARK
(grins)
You're so
hopeless sometimes, you know
that? And
you're such a good actress,
you'd think
you be able to lie
brilliantly.
JAMIE
I suppose
improv isn't my strong
point. I
need lines written ahead of
time.
CLARK
So is that
the only reason you keep me
around?
She wraps an arm around his waist.
JAMIE
You're my
brother, Clark. I couldn't
get rid of
you if I tried.
He pinches her waist and she giggles and dodges away from
him.
CUT
TO:
INT. CASEY'S LIVING ROOM – CONTINUOUS
Casey surveys the swarm of people in her house. Caleb is in
the corner near the stereo system, playing DJ. She threads her way through the
groups of people and runs into Mia, whose face lights up when she sees her.
MIA
Hey.
CASEY
(smiles)
Hey. Long time no see.
MIA
I know. I
cheered at your tournament
yesterday.
It was so long ago.
CASEY
(chuckles)
Can I get
you anything?
MIA
You can find
Leah for me. I wanted to
talk to her.
CASEY
Oh. Well uh,
I haven't seen her. I
don't think
she's even here yet.
The front door opens and another large group of people pours in.
CASEY
(sighs)
You know,
you tell 20 people about a
party, then
all of a sudden the entire
city of Long
Beach is in your living
room.
Mia rubs her arm.
MIA
Awww.
CASEY
(grins)
Don't mock me.
MIA
I'm not
mocking you. I just think that
you should
take it as it really is, a
compliment.
The more people that show
up to your
party, the more popular you
are. Even my parties aren't this big.
CASEY
Oh, I see.
Aren't we full of
ourselves?
MIA
(grins)
I'm just
stating a fact.
CASEY
Yeah, well,
I just hope nobody breaks
anything.
Something always breaks when
I throw a party.
MIA
Oh yeah?
CASEY
Yeah. The
last party of the school
year Shannon
and I threw last year,
somebody
broke the banister of my
staircase.
The entire barrier was on
the floor.
MIA
(laughs)
What the
hell?
CASEY
I know! How
do you break a banister
like that?
MIA
I'd blame
the builders for shoddy
workmanship.
And at least you've got a
metal banister in this house.
CASEY
No, this
time someone's gonna break a
statue or
something. I know it.
(narrows her
eyes)
I can feel
it.
MIA
I bet you
twenty dollars somebody
breaks something else.
CASEY
Wait, you're
not gonna go break a few
glasses
yourself in order to win, are
you?
MIA
(scoffs)
Would I do that to you?
CASEY
(teases)
I don't
know. You're quite a shady
character.
I'm not sure how low you'll
stoop to win
something.
Mia's faces flushes.
CASEY
Are you ok?
MIA
Yeah, it's
just warm in here.
CASEY
Let's get
you something to drink,
then.
She leads Mia into the kitchen.
CUT TO:
INT. CASEY'S KITCHEN – CONTINUOUS
Meagan's sitting up on the counter, talking to friends.
CASEY
(grins)
Hey. You.
Off.
MEAGAN
How rude.
She hops down and Casey reaches for the case of water that was behind her.
CASEY
Do you want
lemon, Mia?
MIA
If it's not
too much trouble.
Casey nods and grabs a lemon from the fridge, then grabs a small knife and starts cutting it up on the cutting board. Meagan rests her chin on Casey's shoulder and watches.
MEAGAN
Casey?
CASEY
(absently)
Mm-hmm.
MEAGAN
You throw a
great party.
CASEY
Thank you,
my dear. I do try.
MEAGAN
Can you do me a favor?
CASEY
I'm not
taking my shirt off again.
That's only
for practice.
MEAGAN
(laughs)
That wasn't
what I wanted, although it
would be a
plus, but there's this
really cute
girl out in the dining
room.
Casey starts to turn her head to look over, but Meagan stops
her.
MEAGAN
Don't look!
Mia laughs.
CASEY
How am I
supposed to know who you're
talking about then?
MEAGAN
Well, look,
but don't look like you're
looking.
Casey turns her body slightly to dump the knife in the sink,
and takes the opportunity to discreetly check out the girl Meagan's talking
about.
CASEY
I know her. She's in my French class.
She opens the bottle of water and pours it out into a glass
for Mia, adding the lemon.
MEAGAN
(grins)
Do you want
to scope her out for me?
Perhaps
introduce me? I'll love you
forever if you do.
CASEY
(grins)
You were
going to do that anyway,
Meagan.
She hands Mia her drink.
CASEY
Here you go,
m'lady. Now, if you'll
excuse me, I am on a mission.
She gives Mia a smile and heads out towards the dining room.
Meagan smacks her ass as she leaves.
MEAGAN
Thank you!
CASEY
(laughs)
Yeah, yeah.
Mia and Meagan watch Casey talk to her friend through the doorway.
MIA
She's kinda
butch.
MEAGAN
(smiles)
I know. I
just hope she doesn't try at
act too much
like a guy. That's the
whole point
of being a lesbian. If I
wanted a guy, I would...
Mia raises an eyebrow.
MEAGAN
Actually
there's not much I could do,
cause I'll
always be wildly attracted
to other
girls.
They watch as Casey turns her head and wide grin breaks out on her face.
MEAGAN
(chuckles)
I bet Jamie
just got here.
Jamie comes into view and hugs Casey. Casey then introduces
Jamie and her friend.
MIA
(sighs)
Yeah.
Casey gestures with a thumb over her shoulder, then turns to
wave as them. The girl looks at Meagan and smiles. Casey waves for Meagan to go
over there.
MEAGAN
Score. Wish
me luck.
MIA
Good luck.
Mia's left alone in the kitchen, watching as Meagan joins
the group.
CUT
TO:
INT. CASEY'S LIVING ROOM - AN HOUR LATER
Casey and Jamie are sitting together on a couch, Casey's arm around Jamie's shoulders. Clark and Andrea are on the other side of Jamie, and on the other couch is Mia, Meagan and Andrew.
CASEY
And they
took the entire keg, which
was full, by
the way, and lifted it
over the
fence.
ANDREA
No way.
MEAGAN
(laughs)
How strong were those guys?
ANDREW
They must
have been really strong,
'cause
lifting a keg takes some
muscle.
He flexes an arm. Mia pinches it.
ANDREW
Ow!
MIA
Oh yeah, real strong.
Caleb comes back, bringing a drink for Casey.
CASEY
Thanks, Cal.
CALEB
No problem.
Casey takes a sip.
CASEY
You want some?
JAMIE
Is there
alcohol in it?
CASEY
Well, it's
rum and coke.
Casey takes another sip, taking the time to taste it.
CASEY
More like
rum and a little bit of
coke.
Jamie wrinkles her nose at her.
CASEY
(laughs)
Nevermind.
You want to drink this,
Cal?
JAMIE
I didn't
mean that..
CASEY
(smiles)
I know, but
you're the one who has to
deal with my breath the most.
He takes the drink back and Jamie grins at her. Mia watches
them uncomfortably for a moment, then inhales deeply and gets up.
MIA
Be right
back, you guys.
Jamie watches her go.
CASEY
I still
can't get over those guys who
stole my
keg. I have a sneaking
suspicion
that they were the ones that
broke my
staircase as well.
ANDREA
What the hell did you tell your dad?
CASEY
The truth.
He was just glad we used
our own
alcohol and not his. And that
the stairs
were just broken, not
broken
because Shannon or I killed
ourselves falling down them.
Jamie pats her knee.
JAMIE
I'm gonna go
get something to drink,
ok?
CASEY
Want me to
go get it for you?
JAMIE
(smiles)
No, it's
okay. I'll be back in a few
minutes.
CASEY
Alright.
Jamie gets up and heads for the kitchen.
CALEB
Did you ever
find out..
CUT TO:
INT. CASEY'S KITCHEN – CONTINUOUS
Mia goes into the fridge and grabs a bottle of Smirnoff Ice.
She closes the refrigerator as Jamie walks in. They stare at each other for a
moment, before Jamie clears her throat.
JAMIE
(politely)
Excuse me.
Mia backs away from the fridge as Jamie opens it back up again. The other bystanders in the room discreetly escape. Jamie grabs a bottle of iced tea and opens it. Mia takes a long drink of her Smirnoff as she watches Jamie pour out her iced tea in a glass.
MIA
(blurts)
What does
she see in you?
Jamie puts down the iced tea bottle and turns to face Mia.
JAMIE
(puzzled)
What does
she see in you?
Mia tries to figure out what to say, then gives up and hangs her head. Casey enters the kitchen loudly.
CASEY
I forgot to
tell you that I wanted a
drink too.
She takes in the scene.
CASEY
Hey, what's
up?
JAMIE
Nothing.
(smiles)
I'll see you back out there.
CASEY
Ok.
She gives Mia a small glance, then leaves. Mia sniffles and
Casey comes over to her.
CASEY
What's
wrong?
MIA
(sniffles)
I can't do this.
CASEY
(confused)
Wh...
MIA
I thought I
could come here and spend
time with
the both of you together,
but I just
can't sit here and watch
you two...
She trails off and wipes her eyes.
MIA
It.. it just
hurts too much.
CASEY
I-I didn't
think it would be so hard
on you. I
just wanted...
MIA
(nods)
I know.
CASEY
I'm sorry.
MIA
Don't be. I
just want you to be happy.
Casey looks at her.
MIA
You are
happy, aren't you?
CASEY
(nods)
Yeah. Yeah.
MIA
(sniffs)
She is too. I can tell.
Casey glances into the living room through the doorway.
MIA
She's good
for you. Don't screw it up,
Farrell.
CASEY
I won't.
Mia wipes her eyes again and takes a deep breath.
MIA
I'm gonna go.
She starts to head out, but Casey grabs her arm.
CASEY
Wait. Let me
take you.
MIA
No, I..
CASEY
Mia.
Mia sighs.
MIA
Ok.
CUT
TO:
INT. CASEY'S LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS
They head out of the kitchen, Mia grabs her denim jacket
from a dining room chair.
MIA
I'm gonna go, you guys.
MEAGAN
Are you ok?
MIA
Yeah, I'm
just not feeling too well.
Casey grabs her keys from the coffee table.
CASEY
Can you guys
keep an eye on things for
me?
JAMIE
Yeah, is everything alright?
CASEY
Yeah, I'm
just gonna take her home,
ok?
She leans down and kisses Jamie on the cheek.
CASEY
Be back in
ten minutes.
JAMIE
Ok.
Mia slips on her jacket and Jamie watches them leave with
jealousy.
CLARK
You alright?
JAMIE
(nods)
Yeah.
CUT
TO:
INT. CASEY'S CAR - A MOMENT LATER
Casey pulls up to Mia's house.
MIA
(inhales)
Thank you.
CASEY
Anytime.
Mia looks at her for a moment, then gets out of the car.
Casey watches her until she opens the door, then sighs and pulls out.
CUT
TO:
INT. CASEY'S LIVING ROOM - AN HOUR LATER
Casey studies a crystal vase, which is in two pieces. She
futilely attempts to fit the two pieces back together, but obviously, they
won't meld back together on their own. Finally, she drops the pieces on the
coffee table and puts her head in her hands. Jamie comes over to her and rubs a
hand over her back soothingly.
JAMIE
There's
gotta be a place where you can
get it put back together, right?
CASEY
Yeah. I just
don't want to have to go
research a
place, sneak it out of the
house, go
there, fork up all the
money, hope
my dad won't notice it's
gone, reassure him that the party was
tame, then
go back over to pick it up,
and sneak it
back in the house and put
it back. I'm
tired just saying all
that.
Clark looks over from dumping a plastic cup in a trash bag.
ANDREA
Why don't
you just use super glue?
CASEY
Because it
looks really obvious.
ANDREA
So I see
you've been through this
before.
Casey lifts up her head to shoot Andrea a look, then drops it back down again.
CLARK
It could've
been worse.
She looks up at him and Andrea who are both cleaning.
CASEY
What the
hell are you doing?
ANDREA
What does it
look like we're doing?
CASEY
It looks like you're cleaning.
ANDREA
Well, then,
that's what we're doing.
CASEY
Stop it. You
don't need to do that.
JAMIE
You are so
not going to leave this all
for Natalia
to clean.
CASEY
Why not? I
told her ahead of time and
we're paying her extra.
Andrea drops the trash bag on the floor and flops onto a
chair.
ANDREA
Thank God. I
hate cleaning.
CASEY
It's not
that bad. I'll probably end
up waking up
tomorrow and cleaning
some of it.
Clark puts his bag down as well.
CLARK
I'm hungry.
Can I grab something from
the kitchen?
CASEY
Help
yourself.
ANDREA
Me too.
They get up and head into the kitchen. Casey sighs and lays
down across the couch, putting her head in Jamie's lap. Jamie starts running
her hand through Casey's hair.
JAMIE
Are you ok? You seem kinda down.
CASEY
Yeah, I'm
fine.
(pause)
What did you
say to Mia?
JAMIE
Nothing.
Why?
Casey studies her for a moment.
CASEY
Nothing. I
was just wondering. You
guys were in
the kitchen together. I
thought
maybe you guys talked.
JAMIE
Not really.
Jamie chews her lip for a moment.
JAMIE
Can I ask you something?
CASEY
Sure.
JAMIE
(gently)
Why do you
hang out with Mia so much?
I mean, she
just doesn't seem like the
type of
person you'd get along with.
CASEY
What do you mean?
JAMIE
Well, she
seems kind of stuck-up, and
self-centered,
and just.. all kinds of
other things
you're not.
CASEY
(sighs)
Look.. I
know that to you, yes, she
seems like your typical popular queen,
but there's
actually a lot more to her
than that.
She just.. has a hard time
letting
people see her vulnerable
side. Chris
and I seem to be the only
ones she's real with. And as for why I
hang out
with her... she's become my
best friend.
I know I'm able to talk
to her about
absolutely anything and
she won't judge me.
JAMIE
(confused)
Do you feel
like you can't do that
with me?
CASEY
No.
(off Jamie's hurt look)
I mean, yes,
I can tell you anything.
It's just
that.. sometimes it's easier
to talk to
her, because we come from
the same
place. Do you know what I
mean?
JAMIE
Yeah, I
think I do.
CASEY
That doesn't
bother you does it?
JAMIE
(shakes her
head)
No, it
doesn't.
Casey smiles and nods.
CASEY
Ok.
Casey closes her eyes as Jamie continues to stroke her hair.
CASEY
(sleepily)
Do you
realize what time it is?
JAMIE
(laughs)
Way past my
curfew.
Casey laughs with her.
CASEY
You guys are
going to be so busted
when you get
home.
JAMIE
Yeah, well,
it was worth it. My first
high school
party ever and it was a
good one,
despite the broken vase,
those two girls I found making out in
your
bathroom, and that guy breaking
up with his
boyfriend very loudly and
causing a
scene.
CASEY
(confused)
There were
two girls making out in my
bathroom?
JAMIE
Yeah.
CASEY
Oh.
(pause)
Were they
hot?
Jamie pinches her shoulder and Casey laughs.
CASEY
Kidding. So
you really had fun? I
mean.. it
wasn't too much? I mean the
drinking and
the...
She gestures wildly with a hand, trying to express the right
words.
CASEY
.. stuff.
JAMIE
Are you
asking if it was too much
debauchery
for my innocent self?
CASEY
I'm trying
to.
JAMIE
(smiles)
No. It was a
new experience, but a fun
one. You made it that way.
CASEY
(grins)
Stick with
me, gorgeous. I'll take you
on the
complete tour of the wilder
side of
life.
JAMIE
As long as
there are some quiet breaks
along the way.
CASEY
(smiles)
As many as
you want. This is one of
them.
JAMIE
Oh yeah?
CASEY
(softly)
Yeah.
Jamie gazes at her fondly for a moment, then leans down and
kisses her softly. She pulls back slightly, then Casey puts a hand on her neck
and pulls her back down. Andrea walks in.
ANDREA
Wh-okay! Nevermind.
She whirls around and heads back into the kitchen.
ANDREA
Geez, leave
them alone for five
minutes...
They laugh.
JAMIE
We should
get going.
CASEY
Yeah.
Casey sits up.
CASEY
You can come
in.
Clark hesitantly pokes his head out of the kitchen.
ANDREA
Is it safe?
CLARK
Looks like it.
CUT
TO:
INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - MORNING
Jamie adjusts a strap of her backpack on her shoulder as she
heads down the hallway. Only a few people are roaming the halls at this early
morning. She walks past Mia, who's sitting on a staircase, writing in a notebook.
She pauses, then goes back and stands in front of Mia.
JAMIE
Can I talk to you?
Mia, slightly startled, looks up.
MIA
Uhhh...
yeah.
Jamie sits down next to her as Mia scoots over to make room.
JAMIE
Look..
(sighs)
I'm sorry about what I said to you...
MIA
(shakes her
head)
No. I
deserved it.
(chuckles)
After all, I
said the same thing to
you. First.
JAMIE
I understand
where it came from,
though.
Whereas I had absolutely no
reason to ask that of you.
MIA
It's ok.
JAMIE
But the
thing is... she does see
something in
you. That's why you're
her best friend. And there are...
there are
some parts of her that I
don't
understand, and I don't think I
ever will.
Jamie turns to face her and brushes a lock of hair behind her ear.
JAMIE
That's why
she needs you. She needs
someone to
tell things to. She knows
that she can
tell me anything, but
we're.. I
haven't been through the
same things she has, but you have. So,
please don't
take our discomfort with
each other
out on her and distance
yourself
from her, because she needs
you to be
there for her in a way that
I can't.
Mia studies her for a moment.
MIA
You know, I
seriously underestimated
you. I
thought you were just this
innocent,
demure girl who needed to be
sheltered and taken care of, and I was
worried
because that's something that
Casey herself
needs and can't afford
to spend her
time and energy providing
it to someone else. But you're not.
You've got a
hidden strength and
spirit that
matches hers. Looks can be
deceiving.
JAMIE
(chuckles)
You can say
that again.
Mia chuckles with her, then looks at Jamie seriously.
MIA
I promise
I'll be there for her. I
won't let my
feelings get in the way
of that.
JAMIE
(nods)
Ok. You
understand that I'm trusting
you...
MIA
(nods)
Yeah. I know.
JAMIE
Ok.
Jamie stands up and starts to leave.
MIA
Jamie?
Jamie turns.
JAMIE
Yeah?
MIA
Take good
care of her. She needs it
more than
she thinks.
JAMIE
I promise.
She gives her a smile and leaves.
CUT
TO:
EXT. MARINE BIO – CONTINUOUS
Jamie rounds the corner and sees Casey leaning against the
wall, waiting for her. Casey grins when she sees her.
CASEY
Hey.
JAMIE
How did it go with your dad?
CASEY
He didn't
even notice the vase was
gone. How'd
it go with yours?
JAMIE
It wasn't
pretty.
CASEY
(laughs)
What was the
punishment?
JAMIE
I'm..
(smiles)
grounded until I'm thirty.
CASEY
That's
something to be happy about?
JAMIE
Yeah. I've
never been grounded before.
I feel very
rebellious.
CASEY
So you're
not going to be able to go
out for a while then, huh?
JAMIE
Nope. But
that just means we'll have
to sneak
away for a our quiet moments
during times
when we already have to
see each
other.
CASEY
(raises an
eyebrow)
You mean like.. now?
Jamie grins and pushes her into an alcove and wraps her arms
around her neck.
JAMIE
Yeah. That
okay?
CASEY
(grins)
By all
means.
FADE OUT.
