Sidewalk Charity Collectors

The Salvation Army and the Volunteers of America do collections on sidewalks (p. 109, 114, 197) and in some public places at Christmas time, like everywhere else in the U.S., I'm sure. They ring bells and such, which is why they are called "ringers." Their collections are generally into red metal containers that hang from a tripod. The containers have a slot at the top. Some dress as Santa Claus (p. 197).
