Chapter 13

"We have to do it tonight," Kaisa said. "There's about two hours until sundown.

"Do we have everything?" Dia asked. Kaisa nodded.

"I still object to this," Dreama pouted, leaning back against a park bench.

"You're being selfish," Kaisa said.

"So what? I'm losing a boyfriend and a best friend, I have a right!"

"A boyfriend?" Dia said, raising an eyebrow.

"Whoops!" Dreama said, smiling sheepishly. "Guess I forgot to mention that." Dia laughed, then sighed.

"Where are the guys?" she asked.

"They went for a walk," Kaisa said.

"Dia?" The three of them turned around to see the guys walking up to them.

"Yeah, Bri?" she said.

"Can we talk for a few minutes?" Brian asked, hopefully. Dia looked over her shoulder at Kaisa, who nodded.

"Just be back in an hour," Kaisa warned. Brian and Dia nodded. Taking her hand, Brian led her down the path to a secluded area. Brian sat down on the grass and pulled her down next to him.

"I don't want you to go," he said, softly.

"But you want your cousin back," Dia stated.

"I love you," he continued, hearing, but ignoring her.

"And you love Kevin," she stated, trying to look into his eyes.

"It's different," he sighed.

"I should hope so," she joked, trying to lighten the mood. He stood up and glared at her.

"How can you joke at a time like this?" he said, angrily. She stood up next to him.

"I'm trying to point out the good side so this can be a little easier!"

"You think this is a joke, don't you?" Dia looked at him in shock.

"Excuse me? I'm the one losing my life, here!" she exclaimed. "I'm the one who's doing this to save someone else's life. I'm the one who's scared to death because my soul will be in the depths of Hell soon!" She didn't know she was crying until Brian had his arms around her. She let out a large sob and buried her head in his chest, her shoulders shaking violently.

"Shh," Brian soothed, gently rubbing her back. "Don't worry about it. You don't have to do this."

"Yes I do," Dia said, pushing away from him slightly.

"No you don't," Brian protested. He put a hand under her chin and tilted it up so their eyes met. "Stay with me, Alex. Don't do this."

"I have to," she repeated, forcefully.

"No. I won't let you." Dia's eyes flashed on anger and she pulled away from him.

"It's not your decision," she growled.

"But it involves me!"

"It involves me and Kevin. It's our decision and we've made it. There's nothing you can do about it." Before she knew what was happening, Brian's lips were pressed against hers. He clung desperately to her, not wanting to let her go. After a moment, they broke apart. "I have to get back," she said, stepping out of his embrace.

"You're still going through with this?" He'd poured everything into that kiss, thinking it would have convinced her to stay.

"I have to."

"No, you-"

"Yes, I do, Brian," she said. Desperate for him to understand, she grasped his hands. "Nothing's gonna change that. How many times do I have to say it?"

"Then go." He thrust her hand at her, causing Dia to stumble backwards a little. "Leave."

"Brian-"

"Get away from me!" he shouted, hurt and angered. Her face fell and he sighed. "Just go." Slowly, she turned and talked up to the path. Before she left, she turned towards him, but his back was to her.

"I love you," she whispered, a single tear slipping down her cheek. Not sure of whether or not he'd heard her, she turned back around and followed the path back to her friends.

It was time.
