Chapter 8

“He sent you to make sure I was really coming, didn’t he?” Kevin nodded and smiled sheepishly, which looked kind of out of place with his dark grey suit, black shirt, and black tie. Kristin only thrust her thumb at her boyfriend next to her.

“I just came with him,” she said. “I know nothing.” Kassy raised an eyebrow at her. “Okay, so not nothing. I was told to say that.”

“If you had held out long enough, he would have paid you to say it,” Kassy said. “He did once to me.”

“Damn, I knew I was too easy on him,” Kristin said, snapping her fingers. The two girls looked up at Kevin, who was rubbing his hands together and blowing on them to keep the blood running through them.

“Kas, can we come in?” he whined. “It’s cold out here.” Laughing, Kassy stepped aside and motioned for them to come in.

“It’s a little cold for you southerners, huh?” she joked as she shut the door behind them.

“Hun, I might be from Georgia, but I took a LOT of vacations in the north so I’m used to the cold,” Kristin joked. “The Kentucky Fried Chicken over here is the one afraid of a little chilly weather.” Kevin looked at her, his faith full of vulnerability.

“I am not,” he protested weakly.

“Oh, honey,” his girlfriend said sweetly as she stood on tip-toe and kissed the tip of his nose, which was the only thing she could reach. “Yes you are.” Kevin’s face turned to mock anger and he smiled evilly at her. For a moment, his eyes swept over her figure in the long, simple black gown she was wearing. She was also wearing heels that brought her a little closer to Kevin’s height.

“Okay, while you two duel it out, I’m gonna go get ready.” With that, Kassy ran up to her bedroom. Taking out the dress that, despite the price, AJ and Howie had convinced to her to buy, she chewed on her bottom lip as she put it on. Throwing on a small amount of makeup, her mother’s drop-sapphire earrings, and a few other accessories, Kassy studied her reflection in the mirror.

“Hun, you ready?” There was a soft knock on the door before it opened and Kristin walked in. “Wow, you look gorgeous. Brian’s gonna go head over heels.”

“Why?” Kassy asked as she sat down on the bed and grabbed her shoes. They were maybe three inch heels with a thin strap op the front that split and got thicker as it reached her ankles, where it wrapped snuggly around them. “He’s got Leighanne. What would he want to look at me for.”

“Leighanne’s a b*tch.” Kassy looked up at Kristin. Her statement had been so blunt that it had take Kassy by surprise. “Once he takes a look at you, he won’t want that thing anymore.” Kassy giggled and shook her head, standing up and fixing her dress.

“We live too far apart,” she stated. “It wouldn’t work.” Taking a last look in the mirror, she turned to Kristin. “Ready?”

“Yeah, lets go.”
