I don't think I've ever been so hyper. I mean, I'm not one of those people who will faint at the sight of a star, but the Backstreet Boys are one of my favorite groups. Anyone who is right in the mind would be overwhelmed if someone from their favorite group asked them to dinner. Anyone!
"I can't believe that just happened!" Rachel exclaimed, tying her wave runner up to the back of my tan, 63' Sea Ray Sun Dancer. "AJ McLean and Brian Littrell just asked us to have dinner with the Backstreet Boys. I think I'm gonna faint!"
"Too late for that!" I said, laughing. "You did almost fall off the wave runner when you saw who it was."
"Don't remind me," Rachel grumbled. She took off her lifejacket and hung it on the back rail of the boat.
Laying mine next to hers, I grabbed a towel, flipped my head over, and started drying the bottom of my hair. "Well, you'll have a chance to make up for it tonight."
"What's tonight?" said a voice behind us. Rachel and I looked up at the dock to see Maribeth, Jamie, and Joanne in their bathing suits.
"Where'd you guys come from?" I asked, flipping my head back over.
"We were just at the pool," Jamie said. "So, what's tonight?"
Rachel and I glanced at each other, wondering if they were actually going to believe us. Yeah, right!
"Well, you're not going to believe this . . . Actually, I think you should come on and sit down first," Rachel said.
"Yeah, because Rachel fell over and she was sitting," I laughed.
Rachel shot me a look that clearly said "drop dead." "You're never gonna give it up, are you?"
"Nope!" I said. We took a seat across from Maribeth, Jamie, and Joanne, smiling the whole time.
"So . . . ?" Maribeth asked.
"Well, you know what? We're not going to tell you the entire thing. All I'm gonna say is that we found two really hot guys on the wave runners. They invited us to dinner tonight!" I exclaimed.
"But, I thought we were all going to go to dinner tonight," Jamie whined.
"Well, believe it or not, we actually thought of that when we were talking to them. So . . ." I cut off, letting Rachel finish.
"So, they said that they had three other guys with them, too. So we're all going to dinner tonight at Waterman's!" Rachel said, looking at the girls faces.
All three of the girls started squealing with excitement. "Are they hot?" Maribeth asked.
"I think so. At least, that's according to the guys we met on the wave runners," Rachel said.
"Wait a minute, they are with three other guys," Maribeth pondered. "Are they gay?"
I looked at Rachel and raised my eyebrows. "I highly doubt it."
"What were there names, anyway?"
I looked at Rachel again. These ladies aren't stupid. They also know their Backstreet Boys. If I tell them that we met two guys named AJ and Brian, they'd be on top of us before we got a chance to run. Wait, I got it!
"There names are Thomas and James," I said. Rachel let out a sigh that was almost imperceptible to me. Well, those are their names. Their middle names. Okay, so this might look like I'm lying, but I had to think of a way out. Rachel and I both know that if we told them the truth (and they actually believed us, which probably wouldn't happen) they'd spend hours on end messing with their hair, make-up, clothing, etc. I mean, they might be able to handle meeting celebrities, but they aren't the type to sit there and take the news quietly. The whole dock would be in the war path if they knew everything.
"Oh, okay. So, what time are we going?" Maribeth asked.
"8, 8:30," Rachel said. "We said we needed time to shower before we go."
"Okay, so we have . . ." Maribeth looked at her watch, "one and a half hours before we have to be ready. I don't know about you, but I'm going to take a shower."
"I think we should all follow suit." Joanne suggested. "The three of us smell like chlorine and you guys have hair with more knots in it than a boat rope. My guess is you went full throttle the whole time, Alex?"
"Duh!" We all chorused. Joanne held her hands up in defeat.
While the other three went inside to get their shower essentials, Rachel and I stayed outside for a minute to chat.
"That was a nice save," she said. "Using the middle names was a great idea. I just have one question: why didn't we tell them?"
"Because we knew what their reactions would be. They'd have two choices: not believe us or go nuts. My guess would be that they'd go nuts," I said.
"True," Rachel sighed. "C'mon, lets go get our stuff and head up to the showers."
After getting our essentials together, we headed up to the showers.
We were walking down the dock towards the showers and talking the whole way. When we reached the door to the bathhouse, I heard someone call my name. I recognized Brian's voice immediately and panicked. What if they heard him? Rachel must have heard him, too, because she was unlocking the door in a mad rush. When she got it open, she rushed the other three inside, threw me the key, and shut the door.
I turned around to see Brian and AJ walking towards me. "Hey!" AJ said while Brian waved.
"What are you guys doing here?" I asked, immediately regretting the harsh tone in my voice when I saw the surprise in their faces. "I'm sorry, it's just that we haven't told them who we're having dinner with yet. We were planning to surprise them."
"Oh," Brian said. "Sorry, we didn't know."
"That's okay. Did you ask the others if they're up for it? You're not coming to cancel on us, are you?"
"No! Of course not," AJ said. "We were just coming to say that the others are really anxious to meet you guys and we can't wait either."
"Oh, okay. Well, I have to go take a shower. I'll see you later," I said, turning and walking towards the bathhouse.
