The Gift

There was a time not so long ago
when I was afraid and alone
thinking myself the most
hideous of creatures
not deserving of any kind
of affection or respect
then she came into my life
showed me how to break free
from the demons of my past
and to look forward to a future
maybe not so bright
but not full of
the darkness of my past
perhaps a touch of hope
is the gift she brings my way
wrapped in love
sealed with respect
given everyday
