Women in Sports

Do woman help sports?

By. Mario Scaglione

Women in sports. For years women have been criticized by men for wanting to do the same things men do. They have been held down in many of the major sports. Not anymore. The women of today are present in all the major sports. Women athletes make a lot of money on endorsements and salary. They have become, as well, icons to other women in the sports world. But do they really help sports? How much money do they bring in and who the hell watches women sports anyway?

Hockey has been a sport which has been labeled barbaric. Hitting and fighting has made hockey a turn off for many fans. But which fans? Women? Men, by and large, love the violence in the sport. The tough Canadian game has made a lot of money for the players in hockey called "goons". These "men" are players that are there for one reason: to fight. In women's hockey there is no fighting. There is no rule stating you cannot fight, but they never do. Women's hockey moreover, is slower and not as skilled as men's hockey. Who wants to watch this crap? Women? So let them. The majority of television viewers are men anyway, meaning this useless airtime that they take up, will not last very long.

A few years back a woman hockey goalie played an exhibition game for the Tampa Bay Lightning. She was not that bad in letting in four goals on twenty-eight shots. But, it almost seemed like the men were taking it easy on her because she was a woman. No one went in front of the net to screen her or even crash into the net. They just left her alone. When a player is hesitant to go crashing into the net in order to score because the person in the net is a woman, something is wrong. You are letting down the fans of the sport because you can't give it your all. Why? Because, "there is a woman in the net".

What if the NHL brought in women "goons". They would get their tails kicked by the male "goons". Come on ladies. Women should not play in male sports. If they want their own league, that's fine but its still boring to watch. Women fighting in a boxing ring, pounding each other's pretty faces. "Don't break nail". Women thought that they were "cool," so a woman boxer challenged a male boxer. The women must have chosen this guy. He was the biggest geek you could have ever met. This guy could not fight. Where the hell did they find this guy? I think he was the president of the "Dungeon's and Dragon's club". The woman destroyed this guy of course. Hey, why not put a woman up against Mike Tyson and see what happens to her?

There is now a women football league. There are about five people in the stands watching this "sport". The women can't tackle as good like the men or pass as far like the men. They can't run as fast as men or kick as accurate. So why would you watch a woman's sport over a man's sport? To laugh? If you want comedy forget Saturday Night Live, just watch a WNBA game.

Women officials in male sports is another gripe I have. Do we want this guys? Women are used to this slow, boring games like in the WNBA. We do not need these women in the NBA. Do they know what illegal defense is (well does anyone actually know what illegal defense is)? What if a fight breaks out? Are the women referees, who are 5'6, and about 130 pounds, going to break up a fight between Shaq and Larry Johnson? What do you think? The NBA brought women in to look good to its female viewers. The NBA is the only sport to have female officials because the violence is much lower than in the NHL and NFL. Hopefully these two leagues never have to torture us with women officials, who can see the game as well as Stevie Wonder.

There is, however, one sport that is intriguing, tennis. The women's tennis game is more interesting and more exciting then the men's game. This was not the case in the 1980's but women have evolved to be better than the men's game. The men's game has become boring. All they do is sit on the baseline at hit shot after shot. There is nothing to it. What ever happened to the serve and volley? The women's game, on the other hand, has a mixture of serve and volley players like Kournikova and Hingis. They have women like the Williams sisters who have the power serves. They also have the baseliners like Davenport and Capriati. The women's game is so much more well rounded then the men's game. The men's game is about power, that's it. This is one sport that I wish the women would get more credit for. But this is the only sport.

Women today have come along way in the world we live in. They are allowed to vote and hold office. They are allowed to hold positions in business where a man has been before. Women serve in high positions in the army. There are teachers and coaches that are women and they do a great job. I believe that women should be treated as equals in many different areas in life but not when it comes to sports. They are not physically and mentally able to do the same work as a man can. As a big fan of sports, I do not want to pay money to see a basketball game and then see a woman player step onto the court and try to slam dunk over Shaq. It's not going to happen. Women do not bring in the fans so why do we need them in sports. They will have more luck if they are attractive. You want to become a cheerleader?
