Women in Sports: One Woman's Perspective
After reading the slightly bias article, written by Mario Scaglione, on women in sports today, I am very pained to agree with most of the author's beliefs. While women in today's society do deserve equal billing and respect, in reality what is deserved and what is rendered are farther apart than the uprights on a modern field goal. While I dissent completely that woman are lacking in the mental aspect and knowledge of the sports professions, I cannot disagree that the skill levels are quite inferior to men in most cases. Women in fact serve no true purpose in the world of professional, and in most cases amateur, sports. Women are "allowed" to "play" only because men are tired of nagging fema-nazi liberals screaming about the injustice that we face on an everyday basis.
First of all, ladies don't kid yourselves. Woman dominated sports are few and far between. The "I can do anything just as well as a man" syndrome has infected our brains and for generations now we have stupidly believed we are genetically as physically equal to our male counterparts. The cold and hard truth is that women are biologically inept, in comparison to men, when it comes to athletics. Men run faster, hit harder, jump higher, and generally progress farther where sporting events are concerned. Try to dispute this if you would like, but the statistics support themselves. Women are one step behind men when it comes to athletics.
Hopefully by now everyone realizes that women's leagues are in existence only as an attempt to appease the outspoken women in this world. The regulations and policies within the leagues are as humorous as the games themselves. The WNBA, for example, is a glorified college conference which operates with the same basic principles as the NCAA. I fell asleep in the first half of the first WNBA game, and cannot force myself to watch it now. Women's hockey?! Please, does that qualify as a game? It's figure skaters with sticks. (Tonya Harding came up with the idea, right?) I've seen women play football also. It can best be equated to watching the XFL, with less emphasis on the cheerleaders. There is a lot going on, but it isn't a real game. There is minimal contact at best, and everything is downsized to "more appropriately sized" equipment for female athletes. Women might as well run relays from end zone to end zone; at least there would be less demand for nail glue on the sidelines.
It is true that men do "take it easy" on women when they play. Rather than be insulted by this, it brings me peace of mind. I do not think it makes for an exciting match in any sport, but I can find comfort in hearing that a male would rather refrain from beating a woman to a bloody pulp. (Perhaps there is some basis for believing domestic violence will die out?) No matter the situation or reason though, something is subtracted from the game when there is a coed melange of players. The intensity, passion, and careless abandon with which men play the game are what is left on the sidelines.
Female officiating, though I don't discount the idea as a whole, does leave much to be desired. While I firmly believe that women are as capable at making calls, enforcing them is quite another matter. Female officials are not taken as seriously which, though NBA officials deny it, the players admit. I wouldn't be as intimidated by a female ref as I would a male referee. Perhaps the only officiating position effectively filled by women is in the NFL, behind the instant replay cameras
. I am in no way saying that women are not adept at any sport. There are those scarce female dominated sports that exist, and some even on a professional level. Tennis is a good example, which Mr. Scaglione adverted to. In the game of tennis a women's genetic lacking does provide for the more interesting game. There is actual movement on the courts, besides having to adjust the genital area. Figure skating, which I am hard-pressed to define as a sport, is also a predominantly female sport. And, were it not for men who decided a woman in any field couldn't outdo them, women would probably be the only participants. Golf, well golf is boring to watch no matter what the gender of the players may be.
Women in sports serve two roles, though to be fair they are not necessary roles. Female athletes do provide strong role models for young women in today's society. But even that is disputable, because the cycle of ignorantly believing we are always equal to men continues. Secondly, it is much easier to decide what to watch on Saturday afternoons when women's basketball is one of your choices.
Though this viewpoint may offer a condescending view of women in sports, it is imperative all realize that not achieving the same standards as men in every possible field does not mean women are lesser beings. Women are on the average more intelligent than men, and have been proven to be more effective under stress and in executive positions. So while men may defeat us on the playing field, we have them licked in the Boardroom. After all ladies, if it offers any comfort, men have harder heads and therefore can take more risks with their bodies. So no, Mario, I don't want to be a cheerleader. But would you protest if I own the team?
